Absolute newbie wanting to do a first grow

  1. Hey everyone!

Long time fan, first time poster here :)

So here's my problem, I buy herb from a guy, the same strain... sometimes its good and sometimes it's just crap :( even though the price stays the same.

so I now want to see if I can actually grow my own to have a "consistent quality" for at least a little while.

I've never grown any plants in my life so I doubt you can find a bigger "newb" than me,
now that you know where I am coming from, this is my plan:

Buy a grow tent and equipment like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hydroponics-80x80x160cm-Co...
then try to grow just *one* plant.

Reading on this very site, I see there is a chance of getting a male plant so I will be buying just "feminized" seeds.

I figure I will screw up at least on the first or second tries so I want to grow just one plant at a time and I will be buying 3 seeds (to hopefully give me three tries).

I don't have a lot of space which is why I picked that size grow tent/box.

Please note, I have no plans of selling anything that I grow, this is just for personal use.

From what I have read, even one plant can stink up the place during the flowering period, that is a big no-no for me, I am hoping the fan/filter combo detailed above is enough to neutralize the smell - please correct me if I am wrong!

Please feel free to critique my plan, suggest things, call me foolish for not going with option B,C or Z etc or foolish for my present hair cut! :) :p

    All advice/links/suggestions etc are welcome!

    Cheers!

  3. Also when you buy seeds, you have potentially limitless plants available to you through cuttings. I'm still growing plants that came from a seed planted 5 years ago.

  4. It will depend on Genetics, but if smell is a "Big No No", That would be what I would work on the most. maybe add some Potpourri to the apartment. I hope this helps

  5. Hey!

    Thanks for replying guys!

    Thanks!

Heck! I didn't know that! Can you give me some details please? Even links would do!

    It does! Thanks!
Yes, smell is a huge no-no, so I am looking at different plants and trying to find the ones that are easiest to grow (no exotics) and where the smell is less compared to it's sisters.

One question about the grow tent:
It comes with an "exhaust" and a tube, problem is where I live we have snow for a large part of the year so it's not possible to have a window open... can I let that exhaust directly into the room or ...?
    A bit puzzled here [IMG]

  6. I grow in Alaska with no problem. I vent into my crawl space. With a filter and fan you will be fine. You should also get a fan control to control temps.

  7. read read read. Before spending a single dollar hours of research is required. As far as smell and airflo restrictions consider them before committing. Sounds like your situation is pretty restricted which makes it hard. Not impossible but might be easier to find a reliable source. Every single factor you can't control will affect your grow. If you know and understand the limitations and have researched properly you can still be successful. I vent my tent indoors and compensate but these are things to manag before you invest that first buck.

  8. great advice

  9. Also, a strain like Tangerine Dream barely smells like weed, and there are others. I seem to recall one that smelled like cat piss, swear to god.

But yeah... EVERY SINGLE QUESTION, every one of them, has been asked. You may come across something that hasn't been answered yet, lol, but they've ALL been asked. So search search search some more. Can't find what you're looking for? You just googled it wrong. Change a word or something and BAM, Google shall provide. (If there really is a God, I'm going to be judged for that one!)

    Anyway, good luck!

  10. Yay! Finally Grasscity is back online!

Yep, doing a lotttt of reading and watching youtube videos for better visual explanations when I don't get something I read (eg: Scrog method)

Yep, if I can't get rid of the smell this is a no go before it takes off.
What do you mean by "reliable source"?

    How do you "compensate"?

Haha! Yeah, I heard of some strange smelling strains! I can get over people thinking I have a stinky cat instead of a stinky plant! :D

I agree with you! And I have been googling my ass off but it can sometimes be a bit tough to know which word to swap to get the correct answer/s, my google fu is strong but sometimes it does fail me!

The only thing right now holding me back is the venting, I'm not totally sure how to do that in the cold country that I live in and thats why I am reading a lot on this very site and asking that question...

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks to everyone who read/replied, I really appreciate it!

  11. The fan/filter (preferably 6") will definitely clear up the grow smell. Drying is another matter but you may choose to do so in the tent which will help.

Fan /filter seems to be 4" in all the 'kits' that I have seen online...
I have no problem drying in the tent.

  13. 4 will do. The carbon filters really knock out the smell. I keep a little lemon oil around the tent door for when I open it up for watering and such during flowering.
