Absolute best & safest way to get rid of Gnats

  1. Hey all, thanks for stoppin' in. I'm growing inside not out obviously. I'm not quite sure why I have such a fungus gnat problem. I've had fans blowing on the bottom of my plants since week one of flower. I definitely don't over water. Room temps 78-84. I grow in soil with 7 gallon smart pots. RH 45%

Regardless these little suckers are all over the place. I've had those little yellow sticky cards at the base of my plants for weeks. They've killed thousands of the Gnats but the gnats are still all over and in my soil. Plants are still looking pretty healthy but wtf? I also put Diatomaceous Earth on the top of my pots a week ago but it's only helped a little. Now I'd like a great spray or soil drench that's not harmful to the plants that will kill these little MF'ers. Anyone have any home remedies or great organic buys at the ole grow store to help me with this issue? Thanks all!

  2. LOL. Let the soil dry an inch deep depending on the pot size before watering will stop them.
Second thing . Get sand on the top of the soil sand dries very fast . Beer trap. Get some beer. I suggest only soggy beer on the bottom of the 40 ounce that stuff you dont drink usually . Or any budlight ok to dump it out.
Put some beer into a bowl. Set the bowl out . See if the bastards go into the beer and die. Please never waste beer its a sin .
I was upset when they stop making molson ice 40s in the green bottles . Its now brown. It was a big issue for me lol. Bit of ocd . I went to 30 party stores bought every last one . If they sell green bottle 40s please share . The 12 ounce are still green. Not the same.

  3. Bryan oconner advice is good and safe. Also i rec mosquito bits sprinkled over top of soil under the sand. If the bits, the watering change and the sand doesnt work.....run.lol

  4. Oh if u dont want to waste beer put vinegar in a dish . Be ready for the amount u will see in the vinegar in 24hrs.

  5. Mosquito bits mixed in the top layer of the soil and/or soaked in water and used to water the plants. Best to do both.

  6. You gotta do 2 things. kill the larvae in the soil and kill the adults flying around.

Sprinkle Mosquito Bits or grind up Mosquito Dunks and sprinkle them on the soil. They've got Bacillus Thuringiensis that will kill the larvae. Gnatrol is a liquid that works too. BT is harmless to plants and wont affect the bud. It's best to use BT instead of diatoamceous earth becasue those larvae will find any nook or cranny in the soil. They'll even go to the holes in the bottom of the pot or down the sides of the pot as the soil separates from the side of the container as the soil drys out. BT gets all of that.

Keep using the yellow sticky traps to kill the adults.

I use Mosquito Bits the second I see a gnat. It's good to use as a preventative measure anytime during a grow as well.

  7. Thanks all! Just bought some Mosquito Bits. Instructions say to use 4TBL per gallon of water. Let soak for 30 minutes and then water my plants. Do you guys recommend this or should I do it the way you guys said which is sprinkle on top of soil and then water in? Thanks!

  8. Follow the instructions and water your plant to runoff, and then put dry bits on top or leave the bits in your watering container and let them spread over the soil. Repeat in 5-7 days. All the pupae and larvae will be taken care of and the soil will be inhospitable to adults.

  9. I'd do as @squirksa described. It'll guarantee you get plenty of BT to all parts of the soil right away. Then the bits on top will dissolve slowly over time and you won't have to worry about putting it in your water every time.
