A Little Help For An Absolute Beginner

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by tjthedjdude, May 5, 2014.

  1. Hi, I just embarked on my first grow ever and decided to do it from seed. I went with attitude seeds' "Critical Hog". I'm 12 days in and my ladies are mostly at 2 inches a piece, and I've noticed yellow spotting on 4 of my 12 seedlings. I've spoken with a few growers I trust, but would also like another opinion as well. They told me my dome was magnifying the light and possibly scorching my seedlings, and advised that I open the vent holes on my dome. I waited until I could afford a system I felt I could not go wrong with which was the Grow Daddy by the Hydroponics Group. The plants are currently under a dome planted in rockwool and sitting in about a cm of water under 2 T5 lighting strips. Here is the link to my setup.

I'll take any and all advice I can get along my path to becoming a decent grower. Thanks a million in advance.

  2. Are you monitoring your pH levels? Do you have a grow journal with more in-depth information about your grow?

Pictures would really help us give you some better answers, along with your setup, medium, etc. I highly doubt t5's are causing spotting... even if you're spraying water on the leaf's, those lights aren't hot enough.

  3. Ph is 6.3 via oakton ph2 monitor, medium is rockwool, and the setup can be seen via the link in my original post it's the "Grow Daddy" by the hydroponics group. Thanks again ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399254232.816652.jpg ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399254253.952263.jpg ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399254272.652415.jpg ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399254291.430261.jpg

That link you posted takes me to a website that doesn't show anything.

I'm gonna be honest with ya man, It looks like a heat issue. When you said dome I didn't picture your plants in a black tray with a clear plastic dome over them. That dome should not be used at this point.

The dome is used to keep moisture in. Seedlings need heat and moisture but once they sprout, they need good quality air flow. Leaving that dome on them is making it super hot and humid which isn't ideal for cannabis.

    Take the dome off!

EDIT: And put a fan in there that constantly blows on them babies!

  5. Yes ditch the dome, get them into the hydroponic set up now.

  6. your ph is to high

  7. Thanks everyone, it's greatly appreciated!!

  8. Here's my setup. Also is it really ok to transplant into my expand clay medium this young? I just thought my babies were still to small, but that's why I'm here because I'm sure there are a million ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399257045.916683.jpg ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399257066.762458.jpg and 1 people that know more than me. Thanks and I'm also dropping the my ph as we speak.

  9. Are they really big enough snoop? I'm only asking because I'm so far just going of what books have taught me with no hands on experience until right now. Thanks

  10. Now I have more questions that can probably be answered in the forum, but since I seem to have literally at my fingertips some deep wells of knowledge I'll just ask y'all. If I do transplant tomorrow, what is the proper gap between plant and 400w bulb? I don't want to continue scorching these ladies.

    awesome setup

dont transplant them yet.  Throw something under the tray the seedlings are in to boost them closer to T5's   If you transplant now your 400w light is going to be so far away and its just wasting electricity when the T5's will do the trick for now.

But if you insist on transplanting, I'd keep that 400w atleast 18 inches away.   Then lower up to 6" once it actually gets a few sets of true leaves pending your temps.  Shoot for no hotter than 82 unless using co2.

Way to soon to use nutes though.

Oh yes get them in the unit..

the plants in these  picture were sprouted in the hydro unit in full strength solution 18 inches under 1,000watt MH .

The sooner they go under the big light the better, thats what gives you faster growth rates.

the 4 on the right; about 80 days old when chopped.

  13.
using what line, i find it impossible (atleast from my past experience) to be giving those seedlings in your photo with NO true leaves full strength solution.

I have used GH/lucas formula and technoflora line and no way I could do even 1/4 nutes at that stage without burn.

But yes, the more light the better.

  14. I'm really interested in the back and forth here because it's truly a learning experience for me. Here is the nutrient schedule I was given with my nutes. And if I do transplant, my first question is do I just leave them in the rockwool and place between my clay like snoops photos suggest? My second question is when should I if not right away start my nutrients? Here is the schedule they gave me, nutrients are all by Xnutrients. ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399260326.625317.jpg

  15.
They were in Jack's Professional Hydroponic 5-12-26 they sprouted in it from seeds.

I even talk about it here. http://forum.grasscity.com/hydroponic-grow-journals/1280176-snoopdogs-hydro-3000w.html/page-2#entry19500917

LOL I was like fuck-em, grow or die. LOL

My one unit I tried with plain water never even sprouted a seed. Im just lucky.

now im lucky, i would put them in the hydro unit with water but I dont know your nutes so just water.

May as well show the babies their new home. :)

  16.
Very impressive, never heard of that line though but I also don't touch hydro anymore and just do organic soil.

I feel we all still learn a little.
In my opinion, start light, then go from there, you can always add more.

I'm not sure about this other gentleman's experience but I would say...

    LISTEN TO SNOOP!!!

He's the hydro king lol he definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to hydroponics...

  18. Well everything is set up, ph is 5.8, I'm going to place rockwool in baskets surrounded by my expanded clay... Then I hit a snag. Is there any way (other than the obvious not lighting up) to tell if a MH bulb is fried from the factory? Everything I'm using is all BRAND NEW, and I know my ballast is working as my HPS bulb fires right up. As always, thanks!

dude... you're not supposed to touch the glass with your fingers!!!!!! the bulb gets hot, and the oils from your hand rupture the bulb!

EDIT: i understand you didn't get it on to begin with, but its important to know that little fact lol

  20. Well then, I truly learn something new every day.... Lesson learned indeed ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1399302596.048082.jpg
