a dead HDD has new uses for me...

  1. Ok, so it's getting near the end of vacation for me, but surprisingly this break was somewhat productive! So one day i'm incredibly baked, listening to the postal service, and trying to fix a fried hdd. It was only a 10gb, but still any bit of storage helps. Anyway after trying for hours to get it to work i give up. Nothing is going to get this thing to work, and with a shiny new external hooked up, i realize i don't really need the ide drive anymore. So then i do what i always do when i have broken technology: i open it and cannibalize it for all its worth. What this turned into was a new storage case for anything i need to keep hidden. If anyone wants i can write up a full tutorial, but it really isn't that hard. Heres some pics i managed to get with my camera phone:

    "shell"
Heres the final hollowed out shell. i removed the platter, motor, and pretty much anything else i could pull out.

    "Open"
The case open. I kept the bottom circuit attached to the board so it still maintains the look of a hard drive. i also put padding in the empty space where the motor was, for extra protection. Then covered everything in electrical tape.

    "Closed"
The closed and secured box. i used tiny thumbscrews on the case. large enough to unscrew with your thumb, but to the average onlooker they wont notice the difference.

  2. This is the best stash case I have seen, and +rep cuz it's just so damn stealthy! No one is gonna open that thing up thinking theres drugs in there. Very nice.

  3. how much bud do you think it could hold if you were to use it as a stash box?

  4. Its 3.5" wide and I think 5 or 7" long (depending on if its older or newer). About 1 inch deep, so you could probably fit 1 oz, maybe 1.5...

  5. That is a great idea... very ingenious :) +rep for sure!

Though, I would use the stock screws if I wanted to be 100% stealthy... anyone who has seen a normal drive would be able to tell it's been opened... f'n amazing nonetheless :hello:

  6. Able to fit a bowl in there?

  7. That was the original idea, but the shield on the bottom of the drive didn't allow enough clearance for a glass piece. maybe a metal piece if you took off the head, but i haven't tried because i don't have one. The metal is actually quite thick, there isn't as much space in there as i had hoped (its approx 1/2" deep). But it may vary by manufacturer (i used a Seagate).

Not that much, mabye an O tops. I would recommend if you built one, id try to line it with something better than tape. I'd never keep anything out of the bag in this thing, there's too many tiny holes and pockets for stuff to go. Plus if i didn't find and clear out all the metal shaving from drilling out the motor, it wouldn't be a good time.

The problem with that is you need to carry around a hex screwdriver to get them out on the go. I only have 2 on mine now for easy access, but i have all 4 when i go out. its hardly noticeable. Plus i could always tell people its a demo unit for a prototype ;-)

  8. Woah I saw the title of the thread and I was like hey mindshift was over tonight this sounds like what he just showed me. yea I saw this baby upclose and its pretty sweet. Tommorow we can try to put some stuff in it and take some pictures of how much it can fit.

+rep cause this thing is awesome

  9. The next version will have the tops of the stock screws super glued to the holes of the case, then have a latch on the side for locking and unlocking. i was originally going to use the earth magnets that were the hard drive (those fuckers are strong as hell). But if i had and the box got near the computer (or worse my macbook), it would be a pretty hefty repair bill.

  10. I opened this 100% sure it was some sort of techno-bong, lol. This is way better, though, because I have several fried 3.5" disks laying around, CD drives and HDDs and I never thought about using them as stash cases.. keep out them nosy parents! lol

  11. sorry, didnt read replies, so if this was posted i apologize, but theres an even better way to make a larger, more spacious, equally as stealthy stash...

Use an old cd-rom drive. I can hide two zips in mine hollowed out... and the best part is, the front part just snaps in and out for easy access. The back i just left some of the circuit board so it remained closed... things clutch! but nice HDD, gotta love finding new stash places.

  12. +rep because thats cool as shit

  13. Thats cool. I keep all my bud in my old broken nintendo.
