A couple pre-rigging setup questions

  1. Hey GC, well I posted a thread yesterday stoned, asking a bit about hydroponics, and have some questions that i'd like answered :D

    Alright here we go:

1)I'm going to be ordering complete kits (ballast, hps bulb, reflector) from http://www.htgsupply.com, should I order the 250w or the 400w rig?

I plan on having two 'mothers' that will be kept alive in vegetative scheduling (18/6) so I can just use clones from them; which would be better suited for keeping TWO plants alive in vegetative cycle?

2)Since I have the 'mother' plants covered, should I use fluorescent lamps to grow the clones? or should I purchase another kit from http://www.htgsupply.com. I plan on growing/flowering 2-4 clones at a time ASIDE from the 2x mother plants.

I ask because although I have money to spend, I don't have much. Also because I understand that heat is an issue with these HPS grow systems so I wanted your guys' input

    Thanks again!

  2. Here are a couple questions for you now jono.......

1.) Which light are you getting, a MH or an HPS? The MH would be better if it is going in the area where the mother will be kept, but the HPS would be best if it is for your flowering plants.
2.) How big is the grow area and what is the ventilation like? Heat is an issue with HPS grows, but it depends on those other two factors greatly.

All in all I'd go with the 400 probably just because it is not that much more expensive than the 250 if I remeber correctly. Any time you can get more for your money, you can't go wrong!

  3. Thanks fatbob166 for your reply!

    1) I will be using a High Pressure Sodium System, and it's going to be in my room which is quite small. What i'm afraid of is due to the small dimensions of the room, but not only the grow area, heat will be a problem with 400w. Would 2x 40mm computer fans blowing ON the bulbs/hood, and a supplementary rotating fan, or window fan suffice?

2)Ventilation isn't good at all, most 'fresh' air in my room comes under a crack from my door.

  4. get the 400 dual system with the mh conversion bulb, the one with the upgraded reflector and the glass... it helps keep the heat down if that is an issue... or at least keep it directly off the plants

  5. Whoa extremely fast reply, well let me lament;

I HAVE THE SEEDS, IM SO EXCITED :hello:

however, I don't have the proper lighting setup so this has to wait :(

ph0neman, where can I obtain this 400w dual system? To my understanding this 'dual system' accepts both High Pressure Sodium bulbs, and the Metal Halide, right?

Also where can I obtain this upgraded system? :D Thanks!

  6. You'll find it right there at HTG Supply.

For two plants at a time the 250w is plenty. The 400w will generate more heat and will cost 60% more on your electric bill. But...if you ever think you will grow more than two plants at a time get the 400w, it's cheaper to buy your lights once.

  7. Jono-
I'd just like to add one thing.......You said you have your seeds, but you need to wait for the lights before you start the grow. Believe it or not a lot of people would just try to germ the seeds anyways to hold them over till the light arrived, but you are doing the right thing. Being patient is the most important thing in this hobby, so you are off to a good start.
    :D

  8. "Nothing done well is ever done fast" holds very true to me :D

now if any of you could point me to the direction to the BEST soil for use with growing weed, you can tell me before I do a search :D:smoking:

  9. A lot of people around here really like fox farm organic soil. Personally I have not tried it yet, but that is just because I haven't seen it at any stores I've been to. Any potting soil from home depot, or wally world will work just fine as long as there are no pre-added ferts in the soil. Anything that says "Feeds plants up to 3 months..." or anything along thos lines is garbage when it comes to growing baby MJ plants. This goes for Miracle Grow soils, as well as many others you'll see at the store. Just be sure to read the bags well before you buy soil to grow your tomatoes in ;)

  10. Thank you so much fatbob166, by far you've been the most helpful, alongside smoknVTEC...

Do you or anyone that sees this thread, suggest any specific soil? It's raining here in CALIFORNIA, and I've have failed to find Fox Farm Organic Soil, at Home Depot / Lowes / Osh.

Is there any stores in Cali, that carry this at all? If not, is there an alternative anyone suggests?

    Thanks!
