Eight in 10 Americans -- 81 percent overall -- support allowing doctors to prescribe cannabis for various medical reasons. These findings are according to a new poll from ABC/Washington Post. That number is up from 69 percent in 1997, which is the last time ABC and the Washington Post have run a poll like this, and it's up from 75 percent, when Gallup ran this kind of poll in 2003. While the large majority are in favor of medical marijuana, they don't agree on how it should be regulated or handed out. A slim majority, 56 percent, support deferring to a doctor's decision on who should be prescribed marijuana, according to the poll. Despite favoring medical marijuana, outright legalization is still a bone of contention among those polled. Gallup released a poll in October found that only 44 percent of respondents favored outright legalization, however an Angus Reid poll in December showed that 53 percent would like to see the prohibition on marijuana end. The medical marijuana issue is not anywhere near as divisive as other political issues are. 68 percent of conservatives, and 72 percent of those who consider themselves Republicans favor medical marijuana legalization, while 85 percent of Democrats and Independents favor the same thing. Age is the biggest dividing line, with only 69 percent of people over the age of 65 supporting medical marijuana, compared to 83 percent of all people under that age. This study shows that the older people are still the ones against MJ. Many of the people in power in gov still fall into the this catagory of an older person who still believes the evils of MJ. Add that to the fear politicians have of ruining their reputation and destroying their career and it's easy to see why so many americans can be in support of change and so few politicians are willing to listen.
I don't really trust polls. Ask any pollster and they'll tell you that they can word a question differently to get a different answer from people. They could have phrased the question differently and gotten incorrect answers. It could also be the areas tested. Polls are completely useless and our government knows it. The government is very strict because they are misinformed on everything. The original drug studies stemming from the hippie scare were biased in hopes of scaring people into giving up another freedom. The scariest thing is that low doses of LSD-25 worked as well as opiates for the treatment of chronic pain caused by cancer and major trauma in a 60's study. We've shelved drugs that have much more medicinal value that marijuana, so I can't imagine we'll ever see federal legalization. The same thing is happening with salvia. It's being banned one state at a time because people are misinformed and think it's the new acid. They even blamed it for a kid's suicide months after he tried salvia! They're just trying to keep the counter-culture down to take more power from the people, which the founding fathers would completely disagree on. What we need is what Thomas Jefferson said should happen every once in a while to show that the people are in control of the government (hence the second amendment), a nice rebellion.

Wow, and why aren't we all taking legal tokes yet? Btw Tergale i like your Unearth sig they pretty much rock
And that number goes up significantly after a tasting... 99 and 44/100ths % of medical cannabis patients I've surveyed, when asked if they would surrender their physician recommendation for a cash refund of their full price, said they would definitely not, or probably not, wish to give it up. It's the side effects, I think.
heres the problem with some polls. they often are voluntary response. meaning the people see it in the paper and decide whether or not to poll. basically: tons of stoners could have polled while few anti-weed-freaks poll, and vice versa. now if this was like a random sample, in which random people were selected. then the poll might be accurate. im not trying to say that these numbers arent encouraging for our fight for legalization; its just that poll percentages dont show the whole story. they just need to legalize this shit already. everyone knows its gunna happen, so why delay it?
Obama told them to keep their hands off in states where med marijuana is legal damn i wish my state had medical marijuana, id be the first in line!
