600W MH/HPS + 600W LED (soon) Grow Help

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by Xoshua, Nov 11, 2018.

  1. Hey guys. I started a new cycle. I'm using the same setup as before but I moved the light to the middle and took out the LED until flower.

Soil: Promix BX General Purpose Soil.

Strains: OG Cali x 2, Sour Diesal and Durban Poison

Age of plants: 3/4 seeds popped October 9th. Sprouts October 11th. I put a new MH light on the 25th (was using the old MH light and it wasn't as bright). I transplanted from solo cups to the big 20 gallon smart grow bags. (I know they are big but I was going to get the scrog net setup). I also made sure not to overwater but putting my finger into the soil up to my knuckle. If it's even a bit moist I don't water. I suspected I may have overwatered or messed up the pH.

Lights: MH 600W (switching to HPS on flower). It's in a cooltube with reflector.

    Light distance: 14 inches

What is your watering frequency and source of water: Mentioned above. No nutes yet. I used 1 ml of root growth last week. Also the pH of the plant that has the crispy leaves was 7 but I used pH down and lowered it to 6.5.

Check out my older threads to see how my other girls turned out.

So my issue is, what could be causing the brown crispy leaves? It's not warm enough to cause light burn. Temps are floating around 71-73 during light on and 60's light off. I've been trying to find a way to heat up the tent but it's hard since it's getting cold here in Canada.

2/4 plants had their oldest leaves taken off because they were going that brown color on the tips and it started to move up towards the middle of the leaf. Now it's starting to do the same thing to the 2nd oldest leaves.

Any advice to warm up a grow tent especially at night with lights off? I turned my fan off to see if it helps. Any idea what could be causing the issue? I feel like the growth has stopped. The newest plant that was put in (bottom right), is doing well.

  2. that is a sterile media with no nutes in it. I would hazard a guess that it is deficient. Go with a MILD nutrient feed IMO. something like 300 ppm if you have a meter. also since you are in veg and they are getting chilly, keep the light on 24 hours a day for the heat if nothing else.

  3. I'm thinking on getting a greenhouse heater for the night hours. How can you tell the soil is sterile? I believe the soil has nutes in it atleast for 3 weeks? I transplanted into a huge container with fresh soil, wouldn't it be good for a bit until the plants roots grow into the pot? I'll add nutes though if you think its sterile.

  4. what I mean by it being "sterile" is that it isn't amended with with earthworm castings or live organic nutrients. It only contains peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, and lime. It does have mycorrhizae though for the roots. It is good stuff. I use it as a base to which I add earthworm castings, meals, and guanos to.

  5. The plant is getting worse. I took 2 different angles of it. Also I turned the fan off and the temps raised to 74. I'm going to start some small nutes and see if it helps.

  6. Added a space heater on the outside of the tent that points to the intake and to the osculating fan inside. Temps have risen to 80.

I removed the space heater since the temps got to 88. I ended up running the intake to the back of my PS4 and PC. I'm mostly worried about it at night when the lights off. With the lights on I'm sitting at 76.

I added some small nutes, GH root enhancer, diamond nector, veg grow. pH was 6-6.5. This is the results from the changes thus far. Let me know your thoughts.

Should I remove the leaves with the brown/crisp or leave them?

  8. I would keep the leaves on. they are still partly alive and will transfer nutrients if the plant has deficiency. The plants look happy again!

  9. Update:

Temps are good now. I added a oil filled heater. Only issue is the coils turn a red color and I'm worried they will hermi the plants. If I took out the heater before flower, I should be ok correct? You can't see in the tent with the light from the coil but you can still faintly see it. I'll try to get a picture.

I'm concerned about the new plant I put in. It's got a weird twisting/ curling issue going with the 2 oldest fan leaves. The pics will be at the bottom so you can see.

Does it look like its recovering? I'm giving nutes every other water. So it goes nutes with water, water, nutes with water, water, etc.

  10. that is a weird curling. I dunno.

  11. Looks like they're recovering mate.
can't see the pic you just posted But as a general rule,

Leaves curl up is environmental stress- lights/heat/rh/wind

Leaves curl down or droop is something to do with the roots.
Usually whatever the diagnosis, over watering/underwatering/wet feet syndrom etc it's caused by the media being too dense and not having enough drainage.
All of such problems are fixed by adding more perilite and drainage holes. 30-40% perilite is ideal.
The other option for leaves down is root rot. not sure what you do about that in soil though tbh.

And finally if the leaves go wierd and twisty it's almost always a ph issue.

    So, up is environmental
    Down is roots
    Twisty is ph.
There's a few exceptions but it's fairly solid

  12. Oh and I seen you say lights off at night.
Most of us run through the night and off through the day. Keeps temps better and the leccys' cheaper :)

  13. So is it basically self ph buffering coco with a little root stim?
Nout in peat moss is there? Peri/verm are just aeriation
, the lime is for the ph and mycho is root boost.
    That right?

  14. promix bx has peat moss in it. the promix cc40 is the one with coco in it.

  15. Thank you for the replies! I posted a short video on its curl.

So my soils pH is stuck at 7. I've tried adding pH down to the water but it's not budging the soil. I believe it's because its a buffer?

I know you can add dominite lime to lower pH but what about if it's already potted?

I should of set the timer to the night time. I can't switch it now though I think since it would mess them up.

  16. Lime is a buffer in itself. I wouldn't add it to lower the pH from 7 as it would only lower the pH to about 6.8. It may just take time to get the pH to drop. I would make the nutrient feed something like 6.3 and it will correct over time.

  17. Ahh. ... see.. this is where this shit all confuses me.

    I grow in Hydro.

    NFT, DWC or coco.

Hydro meaning that you have to feed all the nutrient via fluid to an inert media.

For these methods the ph is best set at 5.6 - 6.4 depending on where you are in the grow.
    .
Soil growers I believe prefer this to be around ph7

So where does promix fit Into this?
I just Googled it and it sounds like basic potting soil.
Not much use for anything else?
About as void of character as my last 3 ex Mrs

If it is what I think and it's just basic potting soil then why don't people just use coco? The results are incomparable and it's easier to use.
    Is there something I'm missing?
Not trying to sound wide, just the way I come across lol

  18. Thank you for the answers.
I've always used soil so I'm very inexperienced with dwc and hydro (although I'm very interested in it but I would need to invest in a proper ppm and I'm hesitant to try it with my lack of experience).

I bought some coconut brick but I haven't opened it yet. The soil I use is the best soil available in my area (canada). Theres other soils but the soil I chose is the only soil I can find without time releasing ferts.

The other options are the crap stuff like miracle grow and such.

  19. Update time:

Plant 1 (plant that had the crispy/brown leaves originally, it lost the original fan leaves, in the 2nd pic you can see the spots they were). Wondering if it will be alright or not.

Plant 2 is good, it's got a bit of fan leaf issues but since fixing the pH, it looks healthy.

Plant 3 (the plant that had the curling twisting leaves), is doing good. Those curling leaves fell off I believe. It's doing alright but it has a weird look to the older fan leaves. I included a closeup of the leaf.

Plant 4 is doing well, it had pH issues as well but it's clearing up I hope.

Quick question, the soil is pH 7. I've been feeding half of the recommended every other water feed and using normal water between nute feeds. So for example, feed half nutes one day, when it gets dry, give it just water, when that gets dry, give it half nutes, and so on. So I'm watering every 2-4 days. (Whenever it gets dry). Should I be doing full feed? I only do half because the instructions say I should only give nutes once per week.

Also I've been pHing the water to 6 to hopefully bring the overall soil to 6.5 using pH down from GH. Will this eventually fix the pH issue with the soil? When I measure the soil, it still reads 7 but I've only been giving the soil pH of 6.0.
