5500k vs 6500k cfl for vegetative

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by defaultskin, Jul 19, 2018.

  1. Btw this is my first ever grow...

I got 4 lil baby plants right now, 3 of them are less than a week old and one is just over 2 weeks. I've been using 5 cfl's for my grow so far (2x 15.5w, 3x 14w), and aware that I need to get some more bulbs to up the strength of the light for them. Also, I realized that all 5 bulbs i've been using are 2700k so i guess that explains why they haven't been growing as well as they could be.

So, after hours of researching different lights online, I decided not to switch to hps or led and just stick with the cfl's. I'm trying to get the best and most efficient bang for my buck. I narrowed down the thousands of options to these two:
    • a 2-pack of 5500k photography cfl's that run 135w
    • a 2-pack of 6500k photography cfl's that run 105w
Basically the same thing, only differences are the light temperature (5500k vs 6500k) and a 30-watt difference. They're also just about the same price, so all I really am concerned with before I buy is understanding which is more important or will lead to faster/more efficient growth for the vegetative stage. Would my plants grow well under 5500k or would my plants be happier getting the 6500k?

  2. I figure that since I already have 2700k bulbs i'll just get the 6500k and supplement with the others to give the plants a broader spectrum. When they are ready to flower I'll remove one of the 65k or get some stronger 27k bulbs

  3. If you want the most bang for your buck, get a T5 HO fluorescent grow light. You end up spending the same amount of money, and you can order different spectrum bulbs for it, including bulbs for flowering.

Unless you are in a really confined space, CFL’s will end up being a disappointment. They do very well for vegetative growth - I’ve used them before with good success. But they don’t work as well in flowering.

Cannabis needs a more intense light during flowering and CFLs just won’t deliver....not unless you get some of those big ass CFLs.
