4in fan and phresh filter enough?

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by nt3grals, Mar 3, 2016.

  1. I was curious if you guys think that a 4inch hurricane fan rated at 171 cfm & a phresh carbon filter rated at 200cfm would be plenty for my tent...? The dimensions are 36"x22"x63"... I'm growing using 2 300 watt Galaxyhydro LED's. Also, do you think that i'll have any kind of heat issue in there? I havent got my fan or anything yet, but i got the lights in it and had it completely sealed up with no fan or ventilation open and it got up to 88 degrees in like 20 minutes. I was just testing to see how hot they would make it get in there, & it got real hot, real quick. Lol

  2. The filter is fine, but the fan is not. If you are planning to use a passive intake, I would use a single 4 inch intake coming from outside, (it doesn't matter the length, it's not included in the cfm formula I use), and place it near one of your corners at the bottom of your tent. Then get one of those flat window fans and place it on the same wall as that intake, above it, at the sweet spot of your plants vertical growth, center the fan @ 36 inches. So it grabs hold of the air coming into your tent and blows it through your plants. Then on the opposite end of your tent near the top of the tent place you cf there and use a small 2 foot piece of ducting to exhaust your cf out of your tent, then at the end of that, outside your tent, use a 4 inch to 6 inch ducting reducer, and hook the cf 4 inch ducting to one end of the reducer, and then hook a 6 inch ducting to the other end, and then when that 6 inch ducting has enough to reach the floor with a L bend, (5 feet), at the end hook a 6 inch 260 cfm fan there, and then run another 6 inch ducting from the back end of that fan to the outside, (doesn't matter the length, it's not included in the cfm formula I use). That will give you a even 164 cfm passive system with the cotton prefilter on your cf, which will bring in plenty of fresh air, while also allowing your cf to filter your exhaust at the optimum rate for a 3 X 2 x 5 grow tent. Your tent is really a touch smaller than that, so your passive system only needs to be 156 cfm, but it's kind of senseless to run a variable fan controller to slow down your 6 inch inline exhaust fan by 16cfm / 2. Also use something like Pellon 807 wonder web with a rubber band to filter your intake and exhaust ducting to keep bugs and contaminates out of your grow room. It works great as a filter without restricting any airflow. Run a vacuum hose over the filter once a month to remove dust and other contaminates from the filter.

  3. You're running what, 280-300 actual wattage between the two lights, or somewhere in that neighborhood? I'd expect around 10f above intake temps with the 4" fan/filter. So if the room around your tent is 70f, your canopy temps should be around 80f, give or take.

Cutting it pretty close, imo. I'd get a 6" fan/filter with a speed controller for summer temps.

  4. So i already ordered the 4 in fan and filter.... With what you are saying i need to also add a 6 inch inline fan on too? I think im fairly certain i am understanding you correctly, but want to be certain. I am just running super low on funds too. Lol. Wish i had gotten these replies b4 i placed my order. Ive already spent $1000 on everything i need. Lol. Or thought i needed.

  5. Also, i was planning on running my fan and filter out of a 6" port anyway with a reducer. Could i go ahead and do that on the inside instead of the outside of the tent and still connect the 6in fan on the outside? Also, when you say run the ducting off of the 6in fan to the outside, where are u referring to when you say the outside? Lol

  6. Nt can I ask where you ordered from? The only reason I ask is? Cause I have an.
Apollo tent 36x20x62 about the same size as yours.($66)
    Marshydro 600 watt LED($130)
An in-line Carbon filter with speed control 200 cfm($120)
    V-Teck booster fan 100 cfm($20)
Comfort zone 4 inch clip on fan($12)
    4x25 non-insulated ducking($13)
    2 pairs of trimmers($9)
I'm sure you probably have more then what I have! I still need my medium, smart pots and seeds! Good Luck with your Grow

  7. I have an agromax tent ($130) HTGSupply
    2 300w Galaxyhydro LED's ($300 for both) Amazon
4in hurricane fan and phresh filter ($140) Growershouse
    Seeds ($70) Attitude Seedbank
Coco Coir and all the nutes i needed for Ironhead's method and my pots and ducting and stuff i got from growershouse for a good price but was still about $200. Then i ordered some Bio-Ag Vam and Total Pond Clarifier from Amazon for another $30+
Plus there were little things i got like some pH up, and new sensor for my pH meter, & calibration solution, & rope hangers and stuff. Lol. Definitely close to a grand. So far.... Lol. Probably going to have to add more stuff after i get everything going though. I've gotta buy a nice powerful fan from lowes or something to for the inside. Will have to build my scrog too. Lol

  9. Yes I still have odds and ends I still have to buy! I still have to set my tent up lights everything really lol. Can't wait!!! I have a grow box going now using 3/26 watt Cfl's. 2 plants using Aurora autoflower from Nirvana.com for $35 I got 5 Aurora and 10 Freebies which are big beans compared to the autos. My younger plant I transplanted which was a bad idea cause you don't transplant Autos. To much stress!!! It had a Nitrogen toxicity, so I flushed it 2 days ago already she's looking better! Anyway Have Fun and Good Luck with your Grow

  12. Hey Fataqui... Are you saying that ill need a 4 inch fan and a 6 inch? Or just some 4 inch ducting leading in to my tent, & one 6 inch fan, bcuz i will have an extra 4 inch fan also

  13. can you put a picture of your tent so I can see where ALL your ducts/vents are. Then I will draw you a diagram....

  14. Here is a pic i got off the internet bcuz im not at home at the moment and my tent isnt currently setup. Its got 2 4" ducts, one at the bottom right and top right on the back wall. A vent on the back wall at the bottom. 2 6" ports towards the top on the side walls, & 2 6" ports on the top toward each side. I think you can tell by the picture though. Thanks again for your help bro! I really appreciate it![IMG]

  15. Hi

I included 3 quick diagrams, the only thing that must match is the 4 inch coming out of the CF exiting your tent. That 4 inch duct / vent must be 3 feet long going into the 4 to 6 inch reducer, that will give you the correct air flow to vent your tent and provide optimized carbon filtering....

  16. Hey bro, the pictures didnt show up for some reason, & thanks again for helping!

  17. Okay after i quoted you i was able to open them. One question on this picture bro...[IMG]
You put, "to rear of back wall 6" exhaust & 4" intake"
When you are referring to the exhaust, you are referring to the other pictures in the diagram, correct, & then on the intake, you are just referring to some ducting being connected to the 4in port, right? I am 99% sure i got you, but just want to be sure. Lol. I have to figure out how i am going to exhaust this out of my closet though since the tent is in my closet. I have kids i am trying to keep it all hidden from, but we only have them every other weekend. Will i even need the 4" fan i bought bro or should i try and sell it and use that money to get the 6"? Thanks again!

  18. Also bro... You have a suggestion as to a good 6" fan i should get that is only rated at that CFM...? The ones i am looking at are rated like 300-400cfm....

If you want to use a higher fan that just fine, but you will need to use a speed controller then because my diagram, and vent sizing 4 to 6 inch after 3 feet sets a 6 inch 260cfm fan to intake and exhaust at the sweet pot, where you will have plenty enough intake air coming in while also allowing your CF to filter the exhaust at the rate it will best filter all the smelly smells coming out of your tent! The 4 inch coming out of your CF and going out of your tent @ 3 feet then being connected to a 6 inch vent via 4 inch to 6 inch vent reducer is used to set the correct air flow for your whole system to 158 cfm to 164 cfm for your setup. I think that should answer your question. Yes, the picture showing the CF is the front view of the other picture showing rear view of that same wall. I didn't include the rear view for the 4 inch intake because it doesn't have any sizing changes, it's 4 inches coming from outside or somewhere in the same room your grow tent is in. But it must have a duct / vent that contains at least (2) 45% or a s curve so no light can leak in during the dark period. Also be sure to place a filter on that intake so no bugs get into your grow tent..... As for the fan, just a cheap 25 dollar fan will work, get one that has aluminum blades, it will be much quieter than a plastic or steel one. This is the inline fan I use for all my 4 x 4 or smaller grow tents.

  20. Awesome bro! You have helped me out so much! I truly appreciate it! I bought a little cheap air flow controller for the fan i bought already, but it just controls the speed. You are meaning i would need a digital one right, If i got a higher cfm fan...? Also, with this formula will my room stay cool enough ya think? Just running the 2 300w Galaxyhydro LED's? You said pantyhose would work for the filter on the ducting right? Do i need it on the 6" exhaust end also? Or just on the intake? I'm also trying to figure out the best way to run my wires out of the tent, since the tent has the velcro flaps for the ports and ill be using flanges for them. I had originally planned on using one of the 4" ports to run my wires out of, but since ill be using both ports now, im not sure where to run em out of. Lol
