400 watt hps too much for my grow room?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by Accastro, Mar 4, 2010.

  1. Hey guys, looking at getting a hydrofarm 400 watt hps pretty soon. Journal sure to follow.

    My grow room size is going to be 2.5 x 5 x 6. w x l x h Feet, of course

With the grow room having no lee-way, Is 400 going to be too strong?

It is going to give me about 10" (reflector) + 18" (between reflector and plant) = 28"

72" - 28" = 44 inches of growth. I was shooting for 3 ft plants so it seems to work.

I want to get an expert's opinion with heat issues to be sure the 400 is not overkill.

I will be getting an electronic ballast and have no plans of exhausting the heat from the reflector.

Any help is gladly appreciated!! I need help

  2. pff, I grow w a 1000w and my grow room is warm but never hot. it stays around the 76's with the door closed and no ventilation.

  3. Oh I see, my ventiliation will be minimal as well.

Do you do anything to compensate for the lack of CO2 or are you happy with the product as is?

Sounds like a 400 watter will have no problem?

  4. im happy with my grow. its only week 1 seedlings but i expect it to get bigger in the next week :)

  5. Theres no such thing as too much light.
Youre good to go bud. Just make sure
you have a decent exhaust at the top of room
and a good route for passive intake.
    Good luck. Cheers.
    :smoking:

  6. I have a 400w lamp in almost exactly the same space. I live in a hot area and require a vented hood/cool tube to run the lamp, but otherwise it works great.

i have a 400w in a 2x2x6 space and it works great. ventilation is a must. i have 42cfm comp fan for intake plus one other small one and a 4 inch inline for exhaust at the top. hope this helps!

  8. With my 400w hps in a small bathroom used for vegging, a osculating fan keeps everything in check, just make sure your ballast has ventilation. Grow area is approx 5x5 in a room thats 6x9.

  9. ok well my grow room is a closet! to my room !!!

I am not too worried too much about overall temperature

then I am worried about the top of the plant to the light.

Obviously the smell will go to my room, but I plan on having a fan shoot out thru the window.

PS. How many plants do you think I can get in this range? I plan on making them short and stocky about 36 inches.

I was thinking anywhere from 4-6.

Looking for quality over quantity. Just personal stash. all legal of course.

  10. I was also thinking of cutting a hole in my closet, maybe 6 inches, to exaust.

But I wanted to do it more for smell then heat.

I dont want to cut a hole to my attic unless I absolutely have to but with only 4 plants, I should not be too worried about smelll right?

It is going to my room, fine. But I dont expect it to crip all teh way to the neighbors or the entry way of the house.

it depends what strain and what type of odor system youre gonna use. you can make a carbon scrubber for like 40$(groow room/design section DIY). im going on 4 weeks flowering and it doesnt smell too much....yet, but as soon as i get paid im either gonna make or buy a scrubber.even though im legal doesnt mean i want people knowing.

you could probably fit 6 in there just fine, i have 6 in mine and its crowded, but your space is bigger. good luck!

  12. i have a "room" this size :

    7 feet tall
    4.5 feet wide
and like 2 feet deep (from the front door to back wall)

    i use a 400 watt

i can fit 4 plants nicely

    go with 4
people say usually takes 100w per plant to get a decent yield.

  13. I will go for about 6 plants, have a few extra in case some shit happens.

Hydrofarm Active Air Filter makes some scrubbers and at a decent price too.
