40 x 40 x 78 Grow Tent With 600w HPS

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by rizzo30, Sep 25, 2011.

  1. I started this hobby with a small 5 cubic foot grow tent. I am thinking of making a bigger flowering tent and dedicating it to flowing with the intention of being able to flower six plants in the same tent. I am thinking of getting a 40x40x78 grow tent which is about 11.11 cubic feet. I thought about going with a 400 watt air cooled HPS lamp for this tent. Would a 600 watt HPS lamp be better for this setup? With a 600 watt lamp it would provide a bit more than 54 watts per square foot.

Currently I am using a 250 watt HPS in a 36x20x62 tent. I have noticed that this is a little small to flower three plants so I want something bigger so I can flower at least six at once without my plants being crammed for space.

  2. i would go with 1000 watt 600 w would work but 400 w would suck balls for that size i got 3x3 and use 1000 watts of hid one 400 w and one 600 w thats why i say 1000w

  3. I recommend the 600w. You should go for 50w per sq ft, so the 600w would be optimal, while still being relatively easy to cool. With a 600 you get the best lumens per watts as well.

the 1000w would require a lot more ventilation in comparison to a 600w, costs would go up quickly.

  4. Thanks guys. That was fast. Yeah, I am thinking that a 1000 would create too much heat. I am in the upper midwest and I am waiting for November to come around to set this up. I am going to put this in a room that will not be heated here in the winter time, but that 1000 could probably heat up the room alone. lol I also thought about doing a 3 x 3 with a 400 as well. Looks like a 400 would probably be just too small for that too. That is at around 44 watts per square foot and I also thought that I heard the rule of thumb somewhere that you want 50 watts per square foot. Sounds like a 600 would do good.

I got two white widow plants and one Industrial plant 7 weeks into flower right now on a 250 hps in a 5 square foot tent. With those 3 plants and my carbon filter in the tent, those plants really seem to be crammed for space. I'm just hoping that a 40x40 would allow more space for six of them so they are not crammed soo damn bad if you know what I mean.

  5. going to use my 1000 watt light to heat my basement with both tents running thats 1800 watts of hid running cant what for winter can turn my portable ac off cause i think its cold in the grow room where my tents are and i got 1000 watts in a 3x3 but i got a portable ac in the room where tents are and washer and dryer to when dryer running the same time lights are on the ac running the hole time but it stays cool in there 70-72

  6. Damn. I had a hell of a time cooling my 250 watt HPS with a 5000 but ac unit which only cooled one little bed room. Temps in the tent were always 85 or higher with the room struggling to stay below 78. That was in the middle of the summer with temps at about 100. Now fall is here and temps are about 70 in the day and 40 at night. I am no longer running ac, but the temps do get a bit warm in the tent when the light comes on at 4 pm. Our winters get really cold though so i'm thinking that a 600 should not be a problem in a room which does not get heated. I really hate winter, but this hobby is a good reason to love that season.
