1st Time Seed Buyer Germination Process

  1. First time buying seeds. Got them from North Atlantic, no hassles.
I've germinated several bagseed in the past in Jiffy Pots with about a 90% success rate but am following their instructions this time.
Currently they are in cups of water in a 70 degree room. They say let them soak until the taproot is about an inch long then plant.
Does anyone else use/recommend this method?
    Thanks

  2. I always do 18-24hrs soak in cup of water, and then transfer to plate/paper towel for the tap root to sprout.
    and then into whatever medium

  3. I soak (imbibe) until they sink, then extract to a damp kitchen towel
    they do drown,
they then rest until they crack and the tail/radicle is about an inch long then plant up

    good luck

  4. Thanks for the replies. I'll check them tomorrow to see if they've sunk. All floating as of now.

  5. Put them in a small tupperware bowl and poke them down if the still float let them sit over the 24hr period. Place between non bleached paper towel fold and dampen and keep dampened.. Place on heated source seedling mat or wifi box modem. When tap root is 1/4 inch place in soil1 1/4 inch. water with a light touch about tablespoon for a few days and build up the amount of water as needed. If seeds havent popped try scarifying them..

  6. Still floating 12 hours in. I'll check them this evening.
On a side note the two bagseed that I put in Jiffy Pots a week ago finally popped.

  7. Thumbs up for North Atlantic Seed Co, good experiences with them.

Stick seeds in dirt. Water. Done deal.99.8% germination.
I've had damping off issues with water soaked open seeds and paper towels were shown long ago to be less then ideal to gem in from all the processing the paper has undergone. My 2 cents.

  9. 24 hours in the cup of water, still floating. Going to continue soaking.

  10. Agree, agree.
The way nature does it in the real world. Really no need to over think it.

  11. I think you might want to plant those seeds soon.

  12. I would plant by now. I soak older seeds for 12 hours or so, just so I know the shell is softened. You don't need or really want the seed to start opening up and sprouting in a glass of water, it will water log and drown.

I've had luck with a nice warm 8-12 hour soak, than straight into soil. Seemed to speed up the time it takes to get above ground, or like I say, helps open up older seeds and prevent helmet head.

  13. Soaking seeds does help. From what I read, the seeds don’t have to drop to the bottom. From my experiences, after soaking for 12 hrs if they are still floating, I can softly tap them and they fall to the bottom of the water. I’ve also germinated seeds without soaking, just placing in dirt. What works for me is the seed heating mat. I find the key is making sure your medium stays warm and moist. My 2 cents as a beginner.

  14. Why would the seed company suggest letting them soak until a taproot grows if they could drown?
I will likely put them in dirt today and keep it warm and moist. I think patience is key here.

  15. After 2 transactions, I will definitely recommend them.

Give them a tap dunking seeds under water when you first drop into cup then again 12hrs later. Normally that will get them to sink. However they dont have to sink, personally that may be bro science we all do lol I'm guilty.

48 hrs in the ziplock bag dark cool place, planting directly in medium can save 2 to 4 days

Future reference those seeds are either growing or done for by now

Congrats on your first seed purchase! It's great to hear that everything went smoothly with North Atlantic. It sounds like you're off to a great start with your germination process. The method you're using is pretty standard and can be quite effective. But it's always good to get multiple opinions. Suppose you're looking for more information on germination or are interested in trying other methods in the future. In that case, check out some of the best seed banks that ship to the USA. Good luck with your growth, and let us know how it turns out!

  18. Soaking seeds can be helpful for older seeds. I think that some seed banks know that they are possibly selling old stock and that's why they recommend it. It's not necessary for seeds at peak health.
