1st time grow - problems start to rise

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by njamnjam, Sep 2, 2012.

  1. hi,
iam growing for the first time - its 4 weeks since i planted my seeds.
the plants grow nicely, but today i was quite "shocked" when i looked at them.

garden-problems-020912 - Imgur (cant upload here.. dont know why :/ )

    specs:
    room-size: 1meter by 1meter, 2meters high
    5 plants (cheese feminized)
400W HPS with reflector (~40cm above plants)
    soil: normal flower soil
1 small fan (not revolving, but i change its place every day)
i feed the with Hesi: supervit, power zyme, growth, root complex
i mixed it into a 10litre bucket wich i use to water every day (not too much and not too little.. i guess)
    pH: ~6

The pictures are from two different plants.

Can someone tell me what iam dealing with?

    Thank you in advance!

  2. Have you been spraying the leaves while the light is on it

  3. Sounds like your drowning them dude. You have to let the soil dry out between waterings to the point the plants almost wilts. Then flood it til lots of water runs out the bottom, make sure it get a proper flooding. Then don't water until its dry again. Your starving the roots of oxygen. I bet growth has slowed to a crawl right?

  4. -- Yes, i have done that a few times. Bad idea?

-- So the soil should really be dry before watering again? I'll try that. Hm, growth was a bit slow the last week.. you're right

Conclusion: Dont spray with lights on & Dont feed until dry
    Hope that helps!
    Thank you guys!

  5. Yes def a bad idea...that causes burns

  6. Hey there!

I stopped spraying, seems to have caused those burn marks.

Only thing that has come up now are some yellow leaves, only really small ones on the bottom.

Could this be due to me waiting for the soil to dry up?
(I watered yesterday, 20ml is what i gave them.. not sure if it is enough as it did not drip out the bottom)

    cheers! :smoke:

MMMMMMMMMM , some better pics , can you not use photo bucket ??????? . if your plants are only 4 weeks veg , minus a week for seedling sprouting and actually getting up . depending on soil , alot of new growers over feed their plants ,

  9. I was out of town for 3 days - So i could not feed at all.
It turned out to be pretty good for the plants - no new brown marks or anything else, only a little droopy leafes but already fixed by watering with pure tap-water, no nutes
Seems i could really have drowned and/or overfed them.
Trying to not feed them till the soil is really dry (pot is not "heavy" any more) and only with tap-water until i see signs of new problems arise.

Aaaaand.. 2 plants are at 40cm height at the moment.. the other ones are at about 25-30cm.. maybe it is about time to flower?

    Thanks for the help!

  10. Hello,

my, hopefully ladies ;), are in relatively good shape i guess -- only some completly yellow leafes on the bottom. i just slightly touched them and they fell off - the stems of those leafes are light purple
is this normal at this stage of growth?
6 weeks old, switched to 12/12 on sunday as i want to be sure i what sex i get
room is getting packed at the moment and i want to get rid of any males to have enough room for the other plants

feeding only tap-water at the moment, and the soil is "completely" dry before i water

  11. Are you Ph ing your water?

  12. I'm no authority, but from what I've read yellowing lower (older) leaves is a sign the plant may need feeding. It could be removing nitrogen from them to supply it to newer growth. How often are you feeding them? I'm sure pictures would help someone diagnose what's going on.

  13. The very bottom leaves will fall off - completely natural. The plant canopy above blocks light & photosynthesis stops. No worries.
The plants look healthy, and since you said you were using normal flower soil, my guess is it's already got enough nutes for at least the first two months.

Water less frequently but with more volume. You want about 20% runoff out the bottom, and this is where you check pH - the runoff water.Your pH (for a soil grow) is low at 6; were you accurate on that reading? To me, this would normally indicate an over-fertilized soil mix. You want to stay in a range of 6.3 to 7.0, with the ideal between 6.5 and 6.8.
Your pH can actually tell you when it's time to feed, assuming you use pH balanced water at around 6.5 for your water-only cycle. Nutrients have the tendency to buffer, or lower, pH. If you water at 6.5 and it comes out 6.0, you are flushing the excess nutrients (a good thing). As it creeps upward toward 6.8 that's normally an indicator the nutes are being used up. Beyond 6.8, time to feed with a photoperiod appropriate nutrient.

Get the feel for the lift test - lift the pot just after it's thoroughly watered, it will be heavy. Do it again when the soil is dried out almost to wilting. Note the difference, you'll be surprised how quickly this becomes second nature.

Go to 12-12 now? The 40cm plant is at the right height, the others need some catch-up time. One option is to LST the tall one while the shorties catch up. You'll probably need to continue this through the stretch period (first few weeks of 12/12) when the plants can double or triple in height.

Light distance - 40cm = about 16"; you could go closer - 25 to 30 cm. Use the back of the hand test at plant level. If your hand gets uncomfortably warm after 15-20 seconds, raise the light slightly. If your hand catches on fire, YOU'RE too high.:smoke:

Hope this helps, bestaluck to ya!

  14. Stop watering everyday. Use the pick up method. If the pot is heavy dont water, if its light water. Let it dry out some between and throughly water till its drenched. Watering a tiny amount only wets the top while the bottom is dry. Its easy and easier to do then your watering of everyday which is uncessary unless you have a bigger plant and its parched.

    Spraying your leaves is unecessary.

Use imageshack.com for your picutures. Cut an paste the forum link.

  15. Yea misting is a bad idea, I misted once... The results scared me to death.

  16. Agreed, misting is only for the first few days of the seedling phase so it stays humid. After that, don't get those leaves wet if at all possible. And ditto on the watering....most of us at first over watered. Now, I got it nailed down just by weight. I know right when she needs a drink just by picking up the pots.

    :)

  17. +1 I learned a darn good about watering after posting here, after my first topic I saw instant positive results.

  18. guys - you are awesome help! :)
my pH reading may not be that accurate since i used a test-kit where you put a pill into water and so on.. need to get a pH-meter asap i think!
i cut down watering to a mininum, only watering if the soil is really dry & the pot is light.
(i filled an empty pot with soil to get the feel for the weight without water)

and about the misting: i stopped as soon as i realized i was giving my plants a hard time :) and it really is scary if you see the effect of misting.. :/

again: thanks alot - and i will post new pictures in the next hour

  19. Here are some new pictures of my grow:

    ImageShack Album - 10 images

Some pictures show my actual problems - But the rest.. is beautiful in my eyes! ;)

  20. I don't measure my PH, I'm not up for that. I feed my girls nutes every third watering and just normal aged tap water (I tend to let the water sit uncapped for three days then I use it.) I haven't run into any problems yet.

EDIT/ They look great by the way!
