Hi Everyone, Just joined recently but I've used this site as a reference for a few years on and off. Basically I've decided to take the plunge into an Indoor Grow for the first time. I'm converting my 9ft tall, 5ft. deep and 2.5ft wide closet into a grow room. My question to the Grass-city community is, as a first time grower would it be too complicated to attempt a SCrOG or should I just go about this grow the old fashion way? I will upload pictures of the closet soon (Before and After). But for now: The Closet is located to the left of the back of the house, so I can drill through to provide vent if needed. It's approximately 3 feet from the window located in my room and 1 ft from the closest outlet. Any Ideas on Lightproofing? Any and all Constructive Criticism is appreciated. *Materials -5 Feminized "Royal Queen Seeds Indoor Mix" -Homemade Grow Lamp with Reflector and 4 42W (6500K) Daylight Twist CFL's (link: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIw6sgcueMI&feature=related]How to build a grow light for $30 - YouTube[/ame] ) -1 or 2 42W (6500K) Daylight Twist CFL's for side lighting -Regular Organic Potting soil for seedling, then FFOF after some growth (5 gal. buckets) -1 Medium Oscillating Fan, 2 120 mm Computer Fans for Vent. -Homemade Carbon Scrubber for smell (http://forum.grasscity.com/do-yourself/281136-how-cheap-easy-efficient-diy-carbon-scrubber.html) -Flat White Paint for walls and door plus Mylar additional Mylar if needed
I don't know what others may think, but id just go the old fashion way. Im new to most of this too. I like to think start easy and work my way up. Soil is easy to maintain and care for. I use ff ocean forest and my ph levels have yet to be off (I used distilled water and ff nutes). The only thing really to watch for with me is over feeding, but to each his own...just my opinion. As far as your closet goes...does the door open in or out? My closets open out. I trimmed out the inside door frame and the bottom with 1x2s and used that stick on weather stripping around them to create a seal of sort. Now no light comes in or out. Im sure there's an easier way, but it does work for me. Personally, id add more light if you don't already plan too. I use t5 and cfls, I don't like the power use and heat from mh/hps. Leds are too expensive imo. Also on the lights, I mix em up. My t5 has 2 6400k and 2 3000k to broaden up the spectrum. My other cfls are 5500k... since I have done this I've noticed positive results in all my plants. Anyhow, good luck with it all and I hope this helps.
I would suggest the old fashioned way your first run through. How many of those seeds are you going to be growing at once? How long do you plan to veg? Either way, you will need a lot more light!!! Unless you're doing just one plant, in that case you have enough light.
comp fans will not be enough for that size room, and as these guys say.. You need at least a 400 for that room, a 600 would be better, imho
Hi Krzy, Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate any feedback, about the closet it opens outwards, your idea with the weatherproofing strips is interesting I'll look into that some more. About the lighting I was planning on getting a T5 set-up as well. Idk what you think about this set up but this is the one I was looking at Dual Lamp T5 Fluorescent Bulb Grow Light Hood Reflector Hydroponics Kit75001 Thanks again!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002JQBQZQ Take a look at this ^^ I have this set up. 4 bulbs for about the same $$$
Thanks Medicine man, I was planning on starting out with 3 out of the 5 and seeing how that goes, as I mentioned to Krzy I was planning on getting an additional T5 set up, this one looks suitable Dual Lamp T5 Fluorescent Bulb Grow Light Hood Reflector Hydroponics Kit75001 So the 2 overhead units and 2 42W bulbs on each side of the closet attached to the drywall with reflectors. I guess I'll need to get bigger fans as per YODA's advice, but this is why I posted so I could get feedback. Veg time wise I was planning on veging until they're about 1.5-2ft considering they'll about double in size after going on 12:12. Thanks for the input
I have the same T5 that krzy suggested, its nice, I like it. But its also only 8000 lumens. I use it in a small veg chamber 2'x1.5'x3'. I agree with Yoda about the 400 or 600. Yeah it cost a bit more, but its really worth it in my opinion. But that might not suit your needs. That T5=8,000 lumens. Where as a 400 watt mh is ~24,000.
Mh/hps do put out much more lumens....I just don't like the heat. I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to fire lol. Energy consumption was an issue for me too. I have 4 plants currently under my set up with this T5 and 4 cfl in 9" hanging set ups....biggest plant is somewhere around 18" tall others are just a few inches shorter. They seem to be growing tip top to the best of my knowledge, nice and bushy. I guess it's mostly each to his own, I know a lot of guys bash me for not using mh/hps but it works for me If I can get this dadgum pic uploader to work, i'll send you guys a pic of my setup/plants.

You're probably in a small space so yeah I understand your concern about heat. But if the heat isn't an issue its better lighting by far. Well, unless you had a shit ton of CFL. I came across a book once, 8oz from CFL is what it claimed. Never checked it out though. Like I said, just a suggestion on a better light. Both have pros and cons to them.
8oz? holy crap, Idk if I believe that...but who knows. I'm slowly getting out of my small space, you hit that right on the head . Most people swear by the mh/hps it seems like, to be honest I've never used em at all...so all in all I have a bias opinion. I only grow 4 plants at a time max, plenty of light for me...I don't sell nor will I ever.... Everyone has different needs/wants. Having 9ft of height, this guy could grow some monsters! When I was setting up everything for mine, I read, I read, and then I read more. GC ended up being the forum I was always looking at...so I joined. Glad this thread has gotten interesting!
I'd personally say Hydro SCROG. Look at my journal in my Sig. Its my first But a 5 plant SCROG would be much more work

My 4x4 tent still had heat issues in the summer time, but it was set in a garage so it was basically like growing in an oven! 4 plants at a time isn't bad, nice individual attention for each one. What do you yield per plant usually? If you look at my grow journal you'll see what I have going right now. Almost out of my tent and into my actual room!

I ended up getting 2 oz dry from 4. I battled mircle grow (not organic) the entire grow. Stupid on my part lol. All my plants nute locked, so I got the bright idea to flush that mg soil. Bad idea once again! Finally got ph levels adjusted w ph up/dn. Smoke wasn't bad, just not great. This grow I started w ff and im expecting an oz+ per plant dried. Everything so far has been just bag seed, this batch of seeds germed much better. First grow only 4 of 20 germed first grow I only had 2'9" of height to work w lmao. I kept them in 1 gal pots trying to keep em short. What do you normally get per plant? I know I've read these crazy claims like pound per. Realistically I don't see that unless its a outdoor monster.
What about a 2 or 3 plant Hydro SCrOG?
Look at my journal. It's 1 plant in a 3x3 area. It's filled up. I personally am only gonna do 1 at a time.
What do you normally get per plant? I know I've read these crazy claims like pound per.
And according to the seed breeder...I should get 440-700 grams.
Where do u get ur seeds? If ya don't mind me asking. I hope u get plenty, but dang that sure does sound like a hefty load off 1 plant. How big of a plant are you expecting as in height?
Oh and I just looked at ur journal, all I can say is wow. Check out the plant pics...wow. more power to ya man!
if u havent decided yet i vote for scrog. i scrogged my first grow and im still scroggin afrer 4 runs. the hardest part is just making the screen and fix it in your cab. im not exactly mr handy myself but i did it for da luv of the grow. u can just really maximize ur yield with it. training them under the screen is nuthing really. its even more fun than just looking at them.
