16 plant SOG under 6 bulb T5

Discussion in 'Indoor Grow Journals' started by zebot, Sep 13, 2009.

  1. I'm doing a tight Sea Of Green flower under 6 T5HO florescent lights. This is my first flowering grow. I transplanted 16 fresh rooted clones into pots on Sept 4th, so it's currently day 9 of flowering. I noticed abundant white hairs on day 7.

I'm using Pro-mix HP, just straight as is. I know that mixing it with soil and other organic goodness would be great, but I needed to do something with all my rooted clones before they wilted away.... I had 26 clones, and I used the best 16 in 6" round black plastic pots.

I'm using a "Pro light" 6 bulb T5 (High output, 54w/bulb), so 324 watts in total. 4 bulbs are the red 3000K, 2 are the bluish 6500K. The light is 4 feet long, and 19.5 inches wide. I built a reflective tent, with black/white plastic or panda film. doesn't have to be too tall; the clones shouldn't be growing 3 feet or anything. It's got a light proof flap that seals nicely around the inner tent. It's on a 12 hour timer, and all the fans except one currently are on the timer (for now). Once i get another carbon filter, circulation will be on 24h to clean up the wonderful stink.

I've made a cool air intake on the bottom right near the base of the pots, directing air upwards and along the undersides of the bulbs and reflector. This is driven by a 12V XBOX fan that i got for $5 at a surplus store. Above the light on the right side, there is a fan that blows upward toward another xbox fan in the roof of the tent, which is directed down flexible 6" ducting to the general direction of my carbon filter for the room (this might change soon). The intake also has the same ducting, so I can chose the location (temps) where my fresh air will come from.

Temps have been around 80 consistently and humidity between 45-55. I try to keep the lights as close as one inch from the plant tops. The determining factor is how often i want to move the lights. it's been around one half inch up each day. It's incredibly bright in there, even though the pics may not seem like it.

I watered on the first day, then again on day 7! i like to let the soil dry a bit before adding all the water they need. When I did water it again finally on day 7, the soil was not completely dry. The Promix HP holds an amazing amount of water in it, and it seems that since i'm not using HPS with all its radiant heat, that the pots don't dry out as quick. I'm PH adjusting my tap water to 5.5-6ish and letting it sit for at least 24 hrs, and I have an air bubbler for a little more oxygen. I add about 15 drops of "B+" per liter of water, and 15 drops of "Awesome Blossoms" 2-11-11. I feed them every watering so far.

These pics are from day 6 and 7. I could further explain things but no need to ramble on... i'll update pics soon and often

  2. Plants look like there loving that T5, i gotta snatch one of those...

lookin good bro, cant wait til ya got some budporn going:smoke:

  3. day 10, temps are around 82, lights have gone up another notch, so about a half inch. Lots more growth; today i pinched lots of lower shoots off, especially the smaller plants to encourage more top growth. It would be great to have many plants near the same height for great efficiency. I will post pics later today

  4. middle of day 10.... just gave them 12 liters of water, with my normal ph adjusted flowering mix. Since the last pictures, as i mentioned, lots of the lower growth shoots have been removed, probably 30-40 of them.

thanks for checking it out, i'll keep you updated.

  5. Day 13 of flowering straight from clones

I had the PH go too low, so unfortunately after giving them all the water and nutrients they needed, I had to give them even more water (bit of nutes too) to raise the PH a bit. They are looking quite perky today considering they are extremely over-watered. I have an air-stone in my water tub, so the roots should still get oxygen no matter how much water they get.

As you can see, they are still growing like crazy

  6. looking great man!!!! I have grown with t5s for years and have grown to love them for both veg and flowering. Awesome seeing other growers having such success with em too :D

  7. looks amazing

  8. thanks for the good words!

Alright... day 17, things are looking nice. PH is back on track, and things are getting really potent smelling, and looking. Might have to invest in an inline air scrubber to stop the smell; probably a 4" fan with a 2 foot long 6" filter.

I can't wait to try some white widow in here, since i imagine it will stay shorter, but would most definitely be stinkier :metal::D:D:D.

  9. So have you ever run this setup before? How much are you hopeing in yeild per plant? And how long did you veg your clones or to what size perf. in inches.
    D

  10. YEAH! What he said! O_0
    :smoking:

  11. Never run this setup before... this is my test run...
The clones were freshly rooted, so they were maybe around 3 inches tall when they were transplanted into the 6 inch pots and put immediately into 12/12 light/dark. The more vertical height the plants grow, the less light the lower buds will get, so the key is getting the light close as possible to the buds and tops. More veg time would push that distance farther, but with LST or other methods, i'm sure you could use fewer bigger plants with maybe a screen also. But to have 16 plants in a 48x20x20 pretty much kicks ass. These sativa clones will probably stretch more than i'd like, but i guess we'll see.

Not having ever done this before, it's tough to guess on yeild, but i would be happy with say 2 or 3 oz's. To average a quarter per plant shouldn't be too hard, but from the looks and the smell, it's the quality that is gonna count on this one, and we'll see about the weight. I'll keep you posted.

  12. Very nice set up, I love my T5 for Vegging and have recently thought about investing into the 4 ft system for a second sog flower room. Can't wait to see how this one plays out... I'm Subscribed!

  13. Day 19
Everything is good. Temps are 75, Relative Humidity at 70. The tops are getting pretty even since I pinched the lower shoots of the smaller plants as they appeared, encouraging top growth. Might as well leave em on the bigger plants if it makes more buds and helps keep those plants shorter. Only one plant has some brown spots on it's leaves, some sort of deficiency, probably from the PH being too low for a while. Any ideas what the plant would like?

Gotta raise the lights to get the camera in there... Here's some pics for ya!

  14. Hello, its day 22

    75 deg F, 68% RH.

I'm curious how the pot size will affect late flowering, the roots are busting out the bottom hole of the pots and searching... maybe they would like some perlite or something later; i guess i could always just pour some in there and cut the bottoms of the pots or something to that effect.

  15. day 23

Pics look different from day to day since i'm trying settings on my old broken camera... lucky it still works. The last picture shows some brown speckles that are on the leaves of some plants, any ideas?

  16. most likely from ph issues. Have you checked the soil runoff ph?? I'd guess that its on the low side. Flushing the pots with ph adjusted water should help out alot. look up info on flushing. :)

  17. Really impressed with your grow so far man! I can't wait to see the final product, I'll be watching before i invest into an a 4ft 8bulb set up of my own.

  18. Lock in this one if you are sucessful I will try it too ! +Rep

  19. this is looking great so far, ill be watching :D
