150w security light

  1. ok i got a 150 security hps light and i dont know how to remote ballst it. what is a project box, so you need it? can you just use one of those metal electric boxes? im goin to go to homedepot tomaro. can anyone list the stuff i need to rewire this thing?

  2. yeah did it my self, i bought a heavy duty extenshion cord and you dont need a project box any metal electrical box will work but its gonna be a lil tight and the ignitor will have to hang out im assuming cus i bought like a 4"x4" and i think that was the biggest they had you will also need one of thoes octagon boxes for the light(3"x3" or so) and the things that go in the holes to clamp the wires in there like 40 cents. also look into buying some sheet metal or anything that can easily bend and withstand alot of heat for a reflector. mines well go for some chains and hooks as well as u will need them for hanging. any other problems let me know.

  3. ok thanx man. glad i got that out of my system. i just have two more questions.

    1. do you really need that other box for the socket, or can you just conect the socket with wires directly without anything. cus im goin to be making a coottube.

    2. how do you ground the wires, and what does that mean? i dont know that much about electricity. didnt really pay attention in my science classes.

  4. ok i got 2 more questions

    1. what is a grounded electric plug? do i need it?

    2. do i have to cut these off or somthing?

ok wait 2 more questions. lol

    1. how do i take out the ballast, do hold it above a stove till it gets hot then hammer it off?

    2. i dont get what they mean by always wire the male plug to the light socket and the female to the ballast. isnt suppose to be the other way around?

  5. no you dont have to use the box for the socket if your gonna make a cool tube im sure u can just anchor the socket some other way and thoes plugs should just pull off if not just cut them then remove the wire covering to splice em together. the ground wire is for the ground fault it need to be connected to metal ie you box that the ballast will go in and the other end will run thru your chord to your electrical socket and into the ground henced being a grounded wire. and the ballast yeah jus put right over a stove dont be afraid it takes some heat to get it loose then just stick the handle end down and pop it right off the glue. and for the male plug to the light thing im not sure but i think you mean for a unplugable lamp right? so you can unplug your lamp from ballast? i had that at first but then accidentally plugged in my system backwards and fried the ignitor so i just run a wire from the ballast to the bulb about 2 ft in my case your setup might require more but yeah i just dont run a male and female connection between ballast and bulb hope i was helpful pce

  6. i got the same type of light
get the pre cut extension cord rated for at least the temp your ballast says
then plug in the red with red
    the black with black
and the green goes on the screw on your ballast the green is your ground wire
it took me 3 minutes max

  7. note the extension cord is pre cut already with a red a green and a black wire its mad easy just have faith your ballast is what is used to power the light or what the bulb is gonna screw into

  8. ok thanx a lot guys. do you guys know what section home depot carries the 150w bulbs?

  9. yes the lighting section its right next to electrical you should find them next to all the floros, cfl's, and halogens etc...

  10. ok thanks. im ganna go get sum stuff tomaro

  11. anyone know if metal halides are converted the exact same way?

  12. Yup.

Essentially you are simply elongating the wires to the lamp; fitting a reflector on one end, and a sturdy box on the other. I went and added male and female kettle sockets, but that's not essential.
