12/12 From Seed

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by DankDankMax, Feb 6, 2011.

  1. For a person with very limited space (and money) I'm considering starting a 12/12 grow. Does anyone have any real experience with this?

  2. If you started a 12/12 grow from the start the plant would start to flower when its mature enough to. Starting with 12/12 I dont think you would get that high of a yield. Ther reason for 24/0 or 18/6 is to let the plant veg for a while to grow many bud sites. I havent used 12/12 from the start but I am sure it will work. if you do I will be sure to follow along.

  3. My experience with this so far has been very positive. I'm doing it for 2 reasons: the first is space, the second is perpetual harvest.

A few bits of advice (or opinion) based on my experience so far:

Use smaller pots than you would if you were vegging properly. The plants (mine, at least) get just as tall but not nearly as bushy, and the root balls seem much, much smaller. The pots I'm using now are 1/2 the size of the ones I was using before, and the plants are doing just fine in them. Since you get less harvest per plant, this is helpful as you can have more plants in the same amount of space.

Stay away from any sort of training. LST and the like would be pointless; if you're doing this, you want a "stick" plant. One big, strong stem with a few leaves and a lot of bud. There shouldn't be anything to tie down, really. I've tried topping a few times, but I was very unsuccessful and gave up. Rather than splitting into 2 new stems, my plants just seemed to show sex where they'd been topped almost immediately, then they'd stop growing and start to flower. As far as a screen, well, same idea; you're not going for a canopy here, you're going for "sticks."

Be very careful of your humidity. I'm doing pretty well at having a perpetual harvest, but that means that I have full-grown adults constantly growing with brand-new sprouts. I've never had a problem, but my ventilation is excellent. Proper ventilation and a fan are an absolute MUST to grow this way.

While we're on the subject, be very careful of odor. If you're doing a perpetual harvest like I am, your box will *always* smell like flowering bud (duh), so you need to be prepared. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but it caught me by surprise how difficult it is to keep the smell down ALL the time. The fan I have in my box for airflow pulls air through a fish tank carbon filter, and my exhaust filters all outgoing air as well. And there are still days that I am hit in the face by a blast of skunk when I open my box.

That's all I can think of for now. Feel free to ask more questions, if you have them.

  4. Do the trees get ready for harvest faster with only 12/12 instead of vegging and flowering? Do you need more light using this method? Thanks for the info!

  5. what about when you start with nutes? How long until you add? same as usual, about 2-3 weeks in? And do you automatically start them on flowering nutes? or 1-2 feedings of veg nutes first to offer some N?

  6. I think it would take longer to get to the end( harvest day) with 12/12 IMO.

  7. everywhere I've read said that total time of grow was around 55-65 days....That's about 60 days from the time it pops out of the soil until the time you chop it down....longest I read was 72 days start to finish. One of the main reasons people do 12/12 is to cut down the time it takes. Also keep in mind most plants will show sex within the first 12-20 days from the time it sprouts....

  8. The time it takes depends on strain also. Sorry I just keep thinking of all my grows where I wanted many bud sites and veged for awhile....the question about nutes.....As long as the plant doesnt show and deficiencies then you really dont need to add nutes in veg or flower.....they just make it bigger and stronger.

  9. like said above somewhere that wont show sex until 2-3 weeks even under 12/12 so why not just veg 24/0 or 18/6 for two weeks then go 12/12 because they wont bud until they are mature

  10. :hello::hello:

  11. Because that defeats the whole purpose of keeping the plants as small as possible. People forget that when your doing 12/12 from seed the objective is to have a BUNCH of smaller plants. 10 mini's may give you the same or more yeild than 1-2 big plants in a way smaller grow area. This is perfect for PC grows. If you have the room to veg out a couple 3-4 footers then go for it, if not you can 12/12 a bunch of shortys and get the same total yeild possibly.

  12. Make sure to check up on the seed and as soon as it sproutsput your light about an inch away from it. If you don't do this it will gradually grow tall and you'll get a small stem.

  13. The thing I don't understand is people being cheap skates when it comes to the bare minimum. If you don't want to spend the bare minimum you are better suited buying from someone who does. Let me list a few reasons why saving a little on your power bill is completely and utterly idiotic.

The plants reproductive (flower) instincts tell it to flower when the ratio of light to dark becomes equal or less light than dark. This signals that it is fall/winter and the days are getting shorter and exponentially colder. This brings on the plants flowering stage. Growing under 12-12 would confuse the plant and reduce the amount of energy created by photosynthesis. Not only are you at a higher chance of getting hermaphrodites (real term - intersexual) but you will be forcing the plant to begin flowering as soon as it is physically mature (anywhere form 4-6 weeks). You will have a small plant that is highly unstable with tiny yield.

Anyone who tells you different is a prime example of the morons I deal with daily working at a hydroponics retailer.

Follow their advice and post pictures, I love getting more feedback. :D

  14. ^^^tiny yeilds...must not have read my last post...also alot of people are avaraging an oz. or more per plant...never herd of confused plants, everything I've seen online says how sucessful 12/12 from seed has been. If you think people start on 12/12 to save on electric then with all respect you are the moron. People growing indoors don't give 2 shits (atleast I don't) about what season it is and if it's the right time of the year to grow to make my plants "happy". THE PURPOSE OF 12/12 FROM SEED IS TO HAVE SMALLER PLANTS, THUS HAVING SMALLER YEILDS PER PLANT BUT MAKING UP FOR IT WITH MORE PLANTS. this method is optimal for people with minimal space. If you got the space to veg then most certainly veg them until your heart desires as you will gain more yeild per plant.

and if I'm confused on something you said I appoligize I'm a tad bit trashy from super bowl festivities =)

  15. If max is giong to have more then one plant then you are right but one plant at 12/12. I had a perpetual grow set up but I used clones and a mother. I only used 12/12 to flower becaue starting out that way the plant knows that day is getting shorter but when it starts at 12/12 the plant doesnt have the same amount of light that it would if it was out side. I can only comoare this to starting a grow outside in the winter when day is short. It will take longer for the plant to mature before flowering if started at 12/12. SO Max if you are growing 10 mini's then go for it......if not play god and mimic what nature does for plants, thats after all the point of growing indoors is to play god to marijuana.

  16. I liked how you referred to me by name :p, you must know someone in your life named Max. Anyway, there was a change in the plans for me, I want to try and do a micro-grow with about 3 plants in a 52x56 cm (1.7x1.7 feet) space. I don't know if it's possible but I guess we'll find out :smoke:.

  17. take a plant or three and bend them over (LST) all branches are going to fight to be the highest one....the highest branch gets the most attention from the plant so if you have many branches growing up to the light. when you start LST just bend a little at a time and then give a day for it to recover and bend more until you get the angle you want. By the time it is ready to flower you should have many branches that will be its own cola(instead of just the one at the top of a normal plant). LST also makes the stems stronger.

  18. I want to do VScrOG to use less space and also give more light to the leaves that are down. I think the branches will be less developed and more leaves and hopefully more colas will grow, also I wanted to ask is this bulb good for growing? OSRAM|Professionals|General Lighting|High Intensity Discharge lamps|Products|HQL|HQL (Standard)|index I know it's not the best but it's not the worst either is it? Don't know if I should just throw those away and invest in other ones.

  19. I'm sorry I'm not used to talking to hobbyist growers with a small closet to work with. I'm more geared toward serious grow ops in warehouses. I was never much of an underachiever.
