Don't have a job or much of any money, which sucks, and I'm usually stuck in my room using my computer.

Since it's pretty much all I do all day, I want to sup it up.

I have posted my DxDiag below, what mod's should I look into purchasing? I think I clearly need more ram, and there are some cheap stick's out there for example:

    Newegg.com - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ

I know more about programming that hardware, so not good with pins, and motherboards, and ram. So any help would be great.

I'm probably going to go with a ram upgrade, so based on my DxDiag can someone tell me what I need to look for in ram to make sure it's compatible. Although other suggestions are appreciated, thanks :)

Or if there are software/driver updates that would help.

  2. A RAM upgrade would be groovy and not very costly, plus its simple to do. You really should do a windows update or at least download service pack 3 for your machine.

    Good luck

  3. RAM is about the only thing I'd really recommend for that system without going with an entire new PC...

Last batch of G.Skill RAM I had at work had quite a few DOA pieces in it...just something to keep in mind! If you purchase from NewEgg and you do end up having issues the RMA will be a breeze...

As said above, run Windows Update!

  4. I'm probably not going to order offline, or from Newegg. There is a place around here called Microcenter which has really good prices.

Also, can you tell me what DOA and RMA mean in you're post?

I just updated my java, and flash. Also will be a while before I'll be able to afford a new computer, and I'm not sure what happened to my laptop. :( So a ram update for now will probably do.

Also, what good will the service pack upgrade do? What's the benefits?

  6. DOA is Dead on Arrival...meaning it defective out of the box.

RMA is Return Materials Authorization...meaning return it to the manufacture. If you're buying from a local retail store all you'd have to do is just return/exchange it there :)

The latest XP Service Pack is '3'...If you just run Windows Update it will automatically download that and all the other updates you are missing. These updates make your system more secure as they plug 'holes' in the operating system that lets bad people get in your system and break things...I highly recommend you run Windows Update and install all the critical updates. You can find Windows Update in your start menu or click: Microsoft Windows Update

Linux-Ubuntu-or Kubuntu or for a laptop Ubuntu Netbook Remix(UNR) They are OS Operating Systems. All free you can download off the website.
Its and open-end OS, so you can edit pretty much everything if your into computers. Upgrades all the time like windows. Never viruses, spyware, junk like that. Doesnt freeze up, never errors,

Its difficult to hook up windows games like WoW and stuff like that. Youve got to install certain things and find a website explaining how to install the game, to much a a hassle, but I guess if your a Windows pc online gamer, Use windows. But if you just use for basic stuff, internet, chatting, writing papers, stuff like that. Linux all the way.

I say screw windows all together.

linux Its takes a little bit of getting used to. But I love linux now, Been a ubuntu user for 3-4yrs now.

Also yes. More ram is always better. Just find out what the max ram for the motherboard is.

My window's update is all fucked up. I downloaded the service pack and installed it seperately. I was wondering why window's update would keep installing updates onto SP2 almost every night? Installing SP3 fixed that because I guess with SP2 it was downloading 1 little update per night, every night. Stupid, not sure why, but problem seems to be fixed.

Yea, I know what linux is. For a while I was getting into that, but ended up letting it go by the wayside, was too busy with other things. I have a ton of freetime now, so perhaps.

If I install it, I would make a separate partition of my drive just for linux, then I can choose windows/linux on startup. Or I could dual boot, but I don't think my pc is strong enough to be running to OS at the same time. My ex-girlfriend, a computer sci major, had a sick laptop. She had windows, the latest mac version, and linux, and could tri-boot, and using a function like the desktop CUBE thing, switch between OS. It was a pretty sick setup.

One problem with linux I always had, was never knowing what version to download. Looks like Ubuntu seems to be the leader, and it's good that everything is open source. Something I might play around with.
    new questions-----***
I'm also thinking about getting an external hard drive. There's ones with 1 TB of space, but too expensive, there's this one I was looking at:
    http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0334240

I was going to backup my computer, what I need, then do a clean wipe? Does my computer have enough power to run Windows7, (I'm not concerned with paying for that so not a problem) or is it still not powerful enough?

Also, as far as RAM goes, I did a memory upgrade checker to find what type of memory I need, and it says I need to install matching pairs. So 2x512 sticks. But they don't have to be same manufactur right? It then says to utilize dual channel memmory, which I can use, it's best to use a kitted pair (meaning 2 of same manufacturer) Am I correct in this?

The above Q&A came from Crucial's memory optimizer, and it had a list of q/a I copied/pasted. I didn't ask those questions, just what came up

  10. I was going to hop on the pro-linux bandwagon, but with the stuff you're doing, just get the RAM lol. Check out crucial.com if you haven't already.

  11. From an everyday performance aspect, you're not going to notice the difference between running an odd number of sticks and running pairs. The only advantage to running pairs is dual channel or interleaved or there's another term for it to memory. It makes the memory more efficient but again, you're not going to notice it unless you're insanely anal about your performance and running synthetic benchmarks. For that to work all the sticks need to be identical.

Just get some DDR400 (PC3200) from a reputable brand (I have always had great luck with Kingston and Samsung), slap it in, and call it a day.

  12. Jammie,

You know I'm a good guy. Wouldn't steer you wrong.

Grab the cheapest DDR2-800 you can find from:

    Micron
    Crucial
    Corsair

    You won't have any problems.

Edit: Fuck you for having a Microcenter near by! :D I mean that in the NICEST WAY possible.

  13. His system doesn't take DDR2.

In his above post he posted one of those "what type of ram do I need" things:

The brand you recommend are also very acceptable. :)

  14. So I can run 3 sticks or mem? Don't have to buy in sets of 2?
Right now I have 256/256/0/0 You are saying I cam run 256/256/512/0 and don't need 256/256/512/512. (srry im fucked hard to type) Last, could I run 256/256/512/11

I love microcenter, SO CHEAP for such great parts, I am inded lucky. and I can't run ddr2

  15. You could do 256/256/256/512 but you'd lose dual channel which "doubles" the bandwidth

    Do 256/256/512/512

BTW: How you surf the internet with 512MB is beyond me... scary shit right there

I know, I lost my laptop for being addicted to drugs, and now all I have is my desktop, and I cant find a job or anything. I can't stand my life.

I'll post some more info in a few. Also, sp3 seems 2 be slowing my PC down. I'll posssssssr a newDiag (as attachment, if anyone wants a peak)

Figures, my check didn't come today, love it. My life just sucks.
