Is organic charcoal the same as biochar?

  1. More specifically, is organic charcoal that has been sitting in a small closet filled with rotting alfalfa and fish bone meal comparable to new biochar?

  3. Organic charcoal?
    Isn't charcoal just carbon, which is the technical definition of organic? Do you mean hardwood lump charcoal?

    I've used hardwood lump charcoal in my soil mixes, worm bins, and compost piles. I dump my ash and leftover hardwood charcoal from my grill onto my compost piles. I just mixed a new soil and left it out. Not for any reason in particular. Just lazy.

    The briquette type things I would probably have to say 'no' to. Coal bad.

    I use my lump charcoal very much the same as HerbMed.

  5. I have never seen charcoal in a soil mix or compost. Can you please tell me how it would be beneficial?

  9. Hey,
    I am washing my chunks of incompletely burned hardwood first with water then a vinegar solution then water.
    Idk why, i just did.
    Then I am preparing a ewc moistened and baby oatmeal
    and kept 80 F for few days.
    Now I will mix the fungus mats with carcoaled wood pieces smashed to dime size add some espoma starter and keep warm for a nother few days.
    Is the possibility of loading the charred wood with the fungus from ewc and the microbes from the starter mix likely to be worth doing? I think so maybe.
    It's the only source of innoculant I have other than some lacto and bamboo litter.
    Which makes me think maybe I should wash the charred wood with lacto first to clean the sites for loading with the ewc and starter mix.
    Also am hoping to try some DE and oil dry in the mix. Would this be redundant to use both? Diversity wise I will add a bit of everything.
    Whatever it is simply an obsession to think about it all
    Those bonsai growers have to really be smart about soil. Are they using organic feeding or what not?
    Or am I just as stupid as I sound?
     
  10. I think they are the same,but they have different form. charcoal is from wood, biochar is also from the wood. You can see the how to make charcoal
