Since another blade is pondering a cloner from vaporizers/humidifiers, I figured I'll throw mine out here. I touched base on it in GoldGrower's killer thread on rooting clones. It's basically your typical bucket cloner. However, I'm using ultrasonic mist/fog makers, from here, run on a mechanical timer I modded in here. Roughly 3 mins on 3 mins off. I took apart the float (simple) and drilled 4 equally spaced holes that I could slide zip ties through. This was so I could center the float in the bucket. I used a 2" hole saw, 2" netpot top rings (cut the basket off), and 2" collars. I also stacked two 3" netpots (secured via the fogger wire and a few small zip ties, looping one of the centering zip ties). I don't know if that made any sense... Look The foggers can splash a good bit of water. I don't want that. I want just the fog. Hence stacking the two netpots. I have it hooked up to my air supply, but no stone. It's just blowing air in through an L connector aimed at the water. Not in the water. The first run of clones I did with the foggers, I just used tap and clonex gel. Did the whole sterilized blades and all. They all rooted, but nothing special. Other than a few getting all jacked up because they rooted into the collar. Plus, I kinda neglected em, and got impatient with others. I know, horrible parent... sigh They're all alive though! Some I just crammed in there while they only had little nubs. No roots (told you I was impatient). Anyway, this time I was bored actually, but I figured I'd take more cuttings of a few select plants. Be a little ahead of my game plan, once I know sex. I didn't sterilize nothin'! Just cut em with some old scissors (I wiped the blades with my shirt), and stuck em into the collars and bucket. No clonex, no soaking in water, no nothing. Cut, in the collar, boom. Done. I shit you not! Now, my soup; I did that different. That's top-secret! I won't be able to make my millions if I were to tell everyone that I used: 3 gal RO 5 ml cali magic 5 ml rapid start 1 ml super thrive & 16 drops of bleach pH to 6.0 Here's a progression of them. I didn't think to label at first, but they were cut last Tuesday night. Well, a little after midnight. So, technically Wednesday early morning. There's pry other stuff I was going to say, but I can't brain any more tonight... If you got questions, I might got answers. -Ken
Why put bleach in there? And did you try with any other humidifiers? Also good funny educational thread, thank ya.
Bleach is for the chlorine to keep it sterile. It only lasts a few days. I give a maintenance dose to my reses every few days. 1ml per 10 gal. I haven't added any more to the cloner yet though. It seems to be doing just fine at the moment. I haven't tried any other humidifiers. I use the foggers to make my own ghetto ones... Glad ya enjoyed.
Three have been slow to go, but here 6 days in they've busted out some lil roots. I do believe I'm gonna roll with this aero... errr ummm... fogponic (don't wanna razz any TAG folk) cloner. Now I just need some of the first litter to throw pistils...
Gotta love freebies! Went over to a buddy's, to beat the crap out some drums, and he gave me some goodies. That reminds me, I'm a drummer. 33 years now... Anyway, got 400 watts of MH goodness, and a piece of some old audio rack gear. A couple 110v case fans, and a few toggle switches. The rest... meh. I can't say I really need any of this stuff, but I'm geeking out right now. I can be such a nerd. I'll put the stuff to use somehow.
It's been about a month now. I might as well update this... So, what happened to all the clones? Haha... I killed a bunch of em! Because they were dudes! I'm all about the ladies! Anyway, long story short. Moved recently, setting back up with lots of new stuff and ideas. Doing a run of bagseeds to get things sorted. 18 to be exact. Recirculating top feed in rockwool Had to build a bigger drain table Poor things were suffering in those little pots... As the clones from the first group showed their sex, I tried having rooted clones ready for re-potting. Fate would have it, that I selected a bunch of what would be males to clone next... Anyway, I've slowly cloned all the females (8 out of the 18), and re-potted as fresh mothers. All original seedlings are now axed and mulch... What of all the original clones, that were used to show sex? Well, I kinda just let the little girls do their thing with the 12/12 The switch happened 3-28-2015 So, been 12/12 for 5 weeks. Sampler Platter There was no rhyme or reason to the numbering of the plants. Just 1 - 18 Well, so happens that these two are the first of the 8 ladies to show off their goodness. Mind you, these were barely rooted little clones forced to flower... #7 #13 Lucky7 and Jason Voorhees I've got two of #7 started in my veg system now. Will see what happens...
I like that cloner man, great roots there. What is the reasoning behind 3 minutes on and 3 minutes off? I mean, opposed to on all the time I like your recirculating top fed system, I'm putting together a very similar system right now. How many litres were those pots? And how long were the plants in them?
Thanks, man! I set the timer that way as to not heat up the water too much, possibly extend the lifespan of the fogger, and to keep from too much moisture collecting on the roots. I wanted more of just the fog. To get those fuzzy pipe cleaner looking roots. Goofing around with it quite honestly. I don't know how many liters. Your guess is as good as mine. I'd say it's a little under a gallon. Or maybe real close to a gallon... They were in those a little over two months.
Oh right, that makes sense. my new system was designed around breeding autos. I wanted to keep them small so I can breed more strains in the same area. I chose 2.5 litre buckets for the job. To test the system I'm going to run some free seeds in there first. Some photoperiod seeds, and ill need to veg them for probably around 6-7 weeks because I'm experimenting with flowering times at the same time. I'm worried they are going to split the buckets lol
Yeah, these are all photo, and I was only interested in the seedlings lasting long enough for me to clone potential mothers. I had though about flowering them out, but I don't have the room for all that, and they would have split the pots, or choked out and died without transplanting. Right now, I'm just getting a perpetual going with these random no name bagseed. See if any end up being keepers, before I pop some known beans.
Thinking back, I could have started the cloning process a lot sooner, but I was still messing around getting other things sorted. So, the plants vegged for quite a bit longer than was necessary for what I ended up needing.
Right on, ninja! Not sure how much of a journal I plan to make of this, but I suppose I'll dump more of my filth up in here...
And now for something completely different. Aside from my three wonderful kids, these are my next pride and joy. Built them myself. Maple ply shells from Keller, and custom lugs from a company called Adonis. Automotive urethane basecoat clearcoat. Anger management.
