Ingredients/Tools:
Herb
Oil (I used coconut, as it has the highest level of saturated fat)
Water
Mason jar (just any old glass jar will do, I used an old salsa jar)
Crockpot or a pot and stove (you can get a $10 crockpot from Walmart)
Filter of choice (Cheesecloth is the easiest, but hard to find at times. I've used a plastic coffee filter that was like 3 bucks)
Optional:
Grinder
Lecithin
Method:
First, grind the herb as small as you can. I flipped my 4 piece grinder upside down and ground for a good while as to get it very fine. The finer you can get it the better. A powder is the best. Place the herb into your mason jar. Note: This will smell a bit, as you are grinding fresh herb. I did this all outside of my house, and it went very smoothly.
At this point, decide if you want to decarb your weed. If you do, heat water in your pot/crockpot, and place the jar (sealed) in the water. For crockpots, I used the low setting (200 F). With a pot and stove, you can just let the water boil (212 F). Because the jar is sealed, any THC which could escape will just settle down later.
Now, it's time to add oil to your jar. The less oil you use, the more potent it will be. As you try more and more, you'll find what ratio works right for your. 1g herb to 1 fl oz of oil is a pretty good baseline. At this point, you can also add some lecithin into the mix, if you so desire. It can help potency and digestion. Note: As you must open the jar at this point during the process as well, I advise doing that outside.
Place the jar into your crockpot/pot. Allow the water to heat to around 200 F (boiling water will be okay). Now comes the wait time. Stir by shaking the jar every so often. If you can try to let it cook for at least 3 hours - the more time the better in general. The smell and any THC is kept in the air tight jar. Make sure to keep adding water when needed, as it will evaporate/boil off. If any smell develops, stop, and check to make sure your jar is sealed.
Once the cook time you decided has passed, your oil should be nearly ready! If you will be baking with it, you next need to strain it. There will be an odor when you open the jar. I did this outside and away from my house, once again.
Now that it is strained: Congratulations! You have just made your very own cannaoil.
Let me know about your results, as well as the ratio of herb to oil that you use!

This is almost exactly the method I was planning on trying out. How was the potency on your batch? (quality of weed used/how much cannaoil you ate/how far that got you). As soon as my jars/oil arrive from amazon I'm gonna give this a try.
Also make sure you follow proper canning safety precautions (only use jars designed to be boiled/cooled, etc -- I'm still reading up on it) or else you'll have much bigger problems on your hands than just the smell.

I've done it once with only already been vaped weed and once with medical quality bud (and made both into brownies). The bud made a much more potent batch, but both were satisfactory (one brownie did me in pretty well). Right now I'm trying a batch that will be strong enough to take in pill form (.5mL to 1mL) - I'll let you know how that one goes!
And good point on the glassware. As said, I've been using a salsa jar with no problems, but certainly that could provide a pretty scary problem. Also, I used a crockpot as to minimize this risk (as it's good at temperature control)

Update: just got home after taking 2 .5 ml capsules full of oil (unfiltered for fun)
Let me tell you, I took those at like 7:40. It's 1 in the morning now and I'm still feelin good. I think I got the oil pretty strong that time.

would the mason jar explode from the gas pressure exerted? and also would it suffice to let it sit for like 2-2 1/2 hrs instead of 3?

PMains I appreciate this post so much. The world needs to know haha
I am doing a batch of COCONUT oil with 3.5 grams right now. This technique's quality of NO SMELL is 100% true.
Even when I decarbed my cheba in a Mason Jar for an hour in the oven @ 235, NO SMELL. Turned off the heat opened the oven door NO SMELL. (NOTE: The mason jar lids come in two pieces a SEAL "the part that covers the mouth of the jar' & a BAND "the part you twist". Since the seal had a RUBBER ring on it, I replaced it with a piece of aluminum foil. The foil was big enough to cover the mouth of the jar and hang over the side to cover all the threads. *MASON JAR* canning jar that withstands higher temperatures.
I am excited to see the results since I only used a small portion of bud and have not smoked for five months.

I make canna oil on a regular basis in a Pyrex measuring cup with coconut oil, covered with foil, baked in the oven and it doesn't smell AT ALL.
Not that I care, one way or the other.

What does decarbing do ? What is the reason you need to do it?
I'd like to try that canna oil in a pyrex meausring cup. What temp.? do you set the oven.
I am going to try both ways, in a jar and a crock pot too.
I have to find something subtle I can eat/take for stealth purposes.

Decarboxylation is the process that turns THCA (non-psychoactive) into THC. It also happens naturally over time and when it is burned.
The standard I've accepted is 220F for 25-30 minutes depending on how dry your MJ is to begin with. I wrap mine tightly with foil in a Pyrex dish to try and preserve some of the terpenes. You have to let it cool down before you open the foil to have any chance of preserving them. Not uber important though.
By the way, the most stealth MJ product ever is a tincture, or Green Dragon. A few drops (depending on potency) in ANY liquid and I'm set for hours.

I am really afraid I would screw up the tincture. It looks quite complicated.
Super easy actually. Hardest part is decarbing. And that isn't hard either. Sam's tutorial breaks it down into easy to follow steps.

Thank you! I used your method yesterday and wow! Hardly any smell and the de-carbing really helped the potency. :-) My brownies really kicked my ass.. Walking around Home Depot giggling good times.

I keep hearing about the benefits of using soy lecithin in recipes, yet nobody includes it in the actual recipes....just some throwaway line about it being optional.
So, how much lecithin do you use? Surely you don't just chuck some in willy-nilly? I mean, is it 1gm of lecithin to a gm of pot ie; 30gms of bud infused into 300ml of coconut oil - the recipe calls for 60ml (3 tbs) of oil containing 6gm of pot - do I use 6gm of lecithin? 3gm? 9gm?....a tablespoon????
