Seconding tomatoes. Like Pot, the plants are fast-growing, thirsty, smelly and sticky, and they love fertilizer but not too much.
Nice thing about tomatoes is that they also belong to the Rosids family. Orchids are monocots (MJ is a dicot) and actually tend to be finicky if grown from seeds, not to mention that orchid seeds are almost the size of dust particles. Many orchid seeds also require erocoid fungi present on their seed coats in order to germinate. I'm not trying to cut down finallylegal, who suggested Orchids, I'm just saying that genetically, they're not the best match. It's a perfectly legitimate suggestion. Technically, based on phylogeny, you should practice with growing Humulus lupus (aka Hops), but they grow on a vine, which definitely wouldn't give you the experience you're looking for in this case. Good luck with your practicing and your eventual first grow! In my opinion, just jump right in, immersion is the fastest way to learn because you learn by necessity.

Once all conditions are dialed in, there is nothing to it really, except waiting =X !
If you wanna grow flowers or whatever for practise, thats cool ... but I mean I never grew a plant before I started growing marijuana, and my first crop came out BOMB

All I'm saying is if you can grow an orchid, you can grow almost anything!
