Decarboxylation Question

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by mrsilly, Dec 8, 2011.

  1. If hash is already pressed with heat. Does it require further decarboxylation to be used in edibles? Should I grind it up and further decarb or am I just degrading my material doing so? It is more expensive experimenting with hash than it is with weed. I would rather see if anyone knows rather than destroy my product? Thank you in advance for help in this matter.

  2. Bump for answer

  3. id smoke the hash and get some shitty weed and try

when youre good at it, try it with more expensive weed or even hash

  4. Thank you reverb. I have worked with bottom shelf. Can make a tincture that works every time. Want to see if I can make it better. I have not tried BKS oil. I like the simplicity of putting a couple of dropperfuls in whatever I eat or drink for effect. I don't like smoking. With oil not mixing with water I think it would be gross, just float on top of what ever you put it in. I eat low carb so the baked goods-are out I see some recipes for dishes where I could use oil.... Just not sure if it would be better (cost effective and potent) than what I am already doing? I have read somewhere in a post that oils can carry more active ingredient than alcohol. I just don't really know if that is truly a valid statement. 5-6 grams of hash is a sizable investment for me to find out. I may just have to bite the bullet and try it to see. I really like the tincture I am making now. I can put it in anything I drink and it adds a wonderful floral taste to soda, love orange or 7up. It works wonderful in wine or beer. would like to see if I can make it better, or if this is the best it can be, and it is just that the alcohol is saturated and not the best vehicle to deliver canabanoids?

  5. So the hash I have is from the dispensary and Im thinking it's just pressed kief. So I guess I'm back to my original thought, is press heating enough to decarboxylate? Should I grind it and further decarb or use it as it is?

  6. By the way ammaharo thank you for the link. The dispensary I buy from has earwax as there specialty. The strain I have is purple buba . I think it's pressed keif. After reading the link I'm thinking I may have to further decarb?

  7. When I press my own keif, it usually doesnt get fully decarbed, so I would simmer it with your butter a tad.

  8. 1 Decarbed 1 gram of hash covered 250f for 20 min.
2 Cooked in Bain Marie for 20 mins in 2oz of 151 rum. I used a ball canning jar stirred constantly. Reduced to 1 oz.
3 decantered the oz of golden dragon into a one oz amber glass eye dropper
    4 Put in freezer overnight.
5 let sit for one more week.

Have not got past the week I will post how it comes out.

  9. Forgot added 1/8 teaspoon of lethicin granulals. Made it globy. I am going to try liquid next time. The granulals just don't want to incorporate with the alchol.
Looking forward to trying this batch. I'm going to take a T break until the weekend.
Planing my next batch with liquid lethicin. Going to make a bath of GD with 4g of mids and liquid lethicin. I will add a 1/8 of
a tsp liquid lethicin to the alchol before the decarbed bud to see how it reacts. Go from there. Second wash the material, add 1/2 gram of hash to 2cd wash then reduce the 2cd wash. Mix it all together happy happy happy.

  10. Ok took 2 dropperfuls @ 3:30 strayed feeling effects @ 4:00 slight.
    4:20 starting to launch
5:30 leveled off medicated 4 out of 10.
I think I over decarbed this batch. It's ok I am ready to try the other end of the spectrum. This will go in with my other batches that have worked, just not what I am looking for.

Next try grind 1g of hash no decarb heat in Bain Marie for 20 minutes with 2 oz of 151. Reduce to 1oz. Cool to room temp put in freezer over night let sit a week.

  11. Next week 2 more batches

Just remember that activation is only the first of two crucial steps, you need to promote bioavailability in a pure oil source, alcohol, or glycerin, in order to facilitate the most absorption. :)

Pressed kief doesn't necessarily need to be exposed to heat, in order to 'stick'... it certainly helps, especially for those 'less-oily' glands, but it isn't always necessary. That being said, even when it is pressed with heat it's usually not enough to even begin the process.... but if it's over-heated during pressing and it is dark brown-black on the outside, but pale on the inside, the outer-most edges have likely been activated while the center remains inactive.

And unless you over-heat and 'cook' the lecithin before it breaks apart, the granules will eventually melt and incorporate into your alcohol, too, by the way. :)

Activation can occur in a pure oil source, so if you're unsure of the method used to press it, I would recommend crumbling it up as finely as possible, giving it a brief (maybe a bit too brief) 12 - 14 minutes at 220 f, then you should process in a quality oil source at 220 f for at least 2 hours, with a freeze in the middle of heating to disrupt cellular integrity (which allows for much more progress to be made upon the following heating). The quick-fry and most stove top methods cause much more degradation, before a good level of bioavailability can even occur.
A gradual and extended, gentle heat in pure oil, can promote activation as the glandular material breaks down, without the risk of causing so much degradation.

Edible cannabis has the potential to be more powerful, than smoking the same material.. but only with the right processing! Even the oil source you use, drastically effects your oils potency, and it even dictates exactly where in your body the cannabinoids are absorbed for processing and distribution!

    ----

The best easily-found oils are coconut oil, and clarified butter (which is store-bought butter, that has been heated to evaporate the water content, while you scrape off the milk solids as they appear). These oils are rich in short and medium-chain triglycerides, which are absorbed passively through the portal vein and liver, for further conversion. (Coconut oil, being the far superior oil, in this
    regard.)
Most common kitchen cooking oils, such as olive, canola, soy, and corn oils, have very little saturated fat, and are comprised mainly if not entirely of long-chain triglycerides, which are absorbed lymphatically, bypassing the liver, preventing much of your potency from being converted to the more-powerful 11-OH-THC.

In most cases, bypassing the liver entirely is a bad thing, but it can be beneficial if your liver consistently over-metabolizes (burns off) cannabinoids upon their entry, or if you are a patient with either little, or no appetite, before you medicate (in which case a long-chain containing oil should be used with canna to peak hunger, and medium/short-chain oils should be consumed shortly after a meal).

Remember, cannabis glandular material is notoriously difficult for the body to digest and absorb all on its own, even after it's been activated, even when it is in the form of a stocky or gooey concentrate. You'll get the most potency, if you put in the effort required to promote a good level of bioavailability. Without that effort, much of your valuable potency simply goes 'in one end, and out the other', without absorption. [IMG]

With oil, if you're watching your carb intake, you can make capsules, dark chocolate truffles, even cheesecake if you choose the right sweetener for your diet....

(Of course besides the capsules shown below, with the right sweetener, and a substitute flour, such as coconut flour, almond flour, or finely milled flax seed, brownies can also be a healthy, low-carb treat!)

(Use concentrated canna oil, low-fat cream cheese, and the low-carb sweetener of your choice... if you make it concentrated, just a little sliver will satisfy both your snackyness, and your medical needs :) )

    -----------------

And oddly, as far as low-carb diets go, the jury is still out on glycerin... while it is still much better than sugar, depending on your metabolism and body type, it can slightly effect insulin levels, or it can behave as a fat depending on the conversion that takes place in your body. Some low-carb dieters are against it, while many low-carb energy bars and shakes, use it as a sugar substitute. :)

Either way, here you go... you can add it to shakes, drinks, meats, soups, whatever you normally eat or drink that wouldn't be bad with a little extra sweet-kick. If it's concentrated enough, you'll hardly taste or notice it at all in a bowl of soup or a beverage, for instance. :p It is more heat-sensitive than oil... don't bake too hot, or too long with it!

If you omit most (or all) of the sugar, and use both hash/cann oil and glycerin tincture, jerky can also be a great low-carb snack...
