Thinking about just moving to Amsterdam

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by Madian, Oct 23, 2011.

1.
Europe in general is very bad with jobs now, Holland from what i know is also bad because its such a small country. Unless you're a specialist in something, i wouldn't recommend moving there because its pretty expensive and having a low-key job won't meet your expectations from this country.
This is true. A ridiculous amount of Europeans are moving to Australia every week at the moment. They seem to have a huge demand for trade workers and Europe most certainly has the supply.

I have a pretty happy outlook on life.

Especially living in a beautiful Canadian Desert.

But I'm tired of all these fucking kids thinking Amsterdam is like heaven and there's no rules, no assholes, no robbers.

There is no benefit at all in moving there let alone visiting it anymore.

The cost of the expenses to fly over, and start his life there and do the exact same shit like he does here but in a different place and lose all his family and friends it makes no sense to a person who thinks about the outcome and and the results. ;)

Edit: Oh and learning a new language.

3. You have a very narrow range of view. Not everyone has a family. And not everyone has friends. And the experience would be pretty cool. Visiting some coffee shops, and just chilling and ordering fucking weed from a menu.

Maybe he doesn't have a place to smoke weed freely where he lives, and there are a number of other factors to take into consideration. Everyone lives a different lifestyle, and living in Amsterdam may be completely different then where he lives.

4. It makes no sense to a person like you whos scared to step out of the comfort zone. Listen this topic was just to spark some responses from people who have experience, i didnt say my bags were packed.

5. I've been there a few times - never been robbed or scared of being robbed, or worried about crime.

Having been a number of places all over the world and the states, the locals in the Netherlands are the nicest I've ever met. I'll likely be heading over to Amsterdam for work again over the next few months and I'm looking forward to it, even though it's going to be wicked dark and cold.

With that being said - it's not going to be easy for anyone who is not an EU member already to move there. If you're serious, I'd recommend checking out this site here:

http://www.expatica.com/

It's also very expensive over there in general - but that's true of a lot of Europe.

6. Yes, but he has no clue what he's getting himself into, he thinks he's moving to weed heaven.

If he did move there, he'd be homeless, nobody would give him a job without a house, and nobody would give him a house without a job.

7. Like goat says, there's way overpriced pot there, and they hate, and I mean HATE Americans, also there's a rumor going around that there gonna ban coffeeshops/weed lounges from any foreigners (Don't hate on me or start a flame, just a rumor) but from what I heard, it could be real. Also, supposedly, there's europeans that like hunt for american lmao, and finally, its kinda dirty/cramped in amsterdam.

But like always, I wish you luck in your endeavors!

8. I just want to move somewhere in Europe. I'm done here.

9.
so somebody isn't allowed to voice their own opinion anymore without getting flamed. And it's nothing like your example, Amsterdam is not currently/recently at war. Amsterdam is the capital, hence why people want to go there, if you came to the U.K, you would go to london, not leeds/manchester/bristol/portsmouth, because it is the most well known place.
That's because Manchesters a fucking shithole!

Damn Goat youre a dumb cunt not once did i say "yeah man cant wait to go there and smoke weed all day". You're just guessing at what i can and cant do, notice the title thinking about moving. It was just a thought but for some reason you took it upon yourself to bring all the hate into this topic when no one else did. Maybe you get pissy when someone thinks about doing something out of the ordinary and you just live a boring life.

--Disrespect is not tolerated here--

11. can't argue with that

12. Well you weren't even creative with it, and you cared enough to start a thread about it. If I was going to move somewhere from this place, I would at least have a couple different choices and I would know what I'm getting myself into.

Well I hope my posts have knocked some sense and logic into you or you can continue with your prissy, 14 year old, do what I want attitude and go be a homeless, jobless, friendless and family-less loser American but who cares, you'd be in AMSTERDAM! Where there will be plenty of assholes like me more than happy to cut you down.

Go, pack your bags, go see what it's like.

13.
I guess its just resentment I've retained from highschool where kids would think Amsterdam is its own country and I dragged it here. Sorry for hating. Live well blaze often.
Dude. Thank you. You took responsibility and apologized. So much better than a lot of people on here. +rep when possible

It's already restricted to citizens of Netherlands, but yes, they do hate Americans a lot, and yes I have heard of the hunting for Americans story by a group of people I know over there, I didn't really believe the hunting part but now I do after you saying it too.

nope, its not. Fail.

Where did you get this bullshit info from....fml....did you read one article about a small town called Maastricht in the South of the Netherlands or did you read news in one of your credible news sources? either way, there is no such restriction and no plans to make any

i think you were watching Hostel too may times Goat because you have a strange perspective on what its like in Europe.

oh yeah and you wanna talk abotu price of weed. Well let me guess, when you visited you were overcharged, well that would be cos your dumbass went to he tourist coffeeshops in Dam centraal

18. hey man, ill give you some real advice, not some negative perspective about something these people themselves have never tried.

Ive lived in 8 countries, The Netherlands was my first and now my current stop. I started when i was 18, i never traveled with any money. I now have a solid career, speak 3 languages and got married along my journey. Im 30 now.

Number one important thing is how much you want it. To see the world, gives a different perspective on life, im not talking about taking a 2 week trip, but im talking about experiencing and embracing new cultures and societies.

If you want to move to the Netherlands as a US citizen, you will need a visa. Depending on your age and goal will depend on the type of visa you need. you will need to look into that.

I can tell you there are many Americans in the Netherlands, and in Amsterdam itself, you only have to look at the American owned coffeshops such as the Grey Area to meet them.

The history between the Netherlands and the US/UK has always been great, this stems from good relations in the 2nd WW. There are of course idiots everywhere in the world and i can assure you that you will bump into the Netherlands too.

The type if work you seek will depend on the type of skills and education you have. My first job was on a tulip farm where i got paid 20 guilders per hour (12usd) and that job came with free accommodation and the owner would cook for me too sometimes. It was a great start, i worked there the whole season (may-october) and was asked if i wanted to stay through the winter, but i had already got another job at schipol airport lined up for December so i turned the offer down. Just for the record, the owner of that farm had a brother who was a grower, i once got paid a weeks salary in weed, i never weighed it but it was a sack full of 'Northern Lights' that i blazed for 3 weeks solid before running out.

To find this type of job, its not good being in the US, you will need to be in the Netherlands on the doorsteps of the job agencies. Thsi type of job was a no document, no paperwork required, my boss who was great didnt care where i was from, just that i worked hard for him when i needed to

If you have a solid education, there is plenty of work for English speakers, Amsterdam and other cities such as Utrecht have a solid financial industry and speaking Dutch is not usually required in such firms..

My advice would be to come here with some cash saved up in the summer time, bring a tent and spend the summer traveling and camping, looking for seasonal work. Once one door opens, others will to.

If you want to come on a more permanent (longer stay) basis, as a US citizen, it will mean you will need a job, which will mean getting online and searching for one. A a non Eu citizen it will be tougher, no doubt. A lot tougher to live here with a high standard of living. Maybe it good to try and meet a girl online, get a relationship going and ask her to sponsor you. Or maybe for this option its best if you learn some dutch and educate yourself to a standard that an international firm would want to take you from the US.

Please do not buy your weed in Dam if you are on a budget, its 50% or so cheaper by taking a 20 min train ride to Utrecht.

Either way, to come here with little money and enjoy 6 months or so is not very hard at all.

My best buddie who is an aussie did this, he over stayed his visa by 2 years before he decided to leave and go home

19. I lived there for three years in the late 90's.

You, as an American, are not permitted to be hired for any job a Nederlander could do. Unless your independently wealthy, your gonna have problems. Rentals are very expensive and hard to come by for an Auslander(you).

20. One thing that would be good about living in Amsterdam especially for someone who hadn't spent much time in Europe is that your only 1-2 hours away from some the of the worlds greatest cities London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona etc and only 2-3 hours from the hotter Mediterranean areas
