Chunk built 2 bins using Dan Holcombe's design. Dan is the owner of Oregon Soil Corporation and he was the first one to build and sell commercial flow-through bins using the original research from Dr. Clive Edwards' work in the late 1980's.

This bin has a capacity of 18 c.f. (bin area = 3' x 4' x 1.5') and will hold 30 lbs. of worms when fully charged which will process 20 lbs. of food stock per day. The food stock will be mixes of aged horse manure, organic thermal compost, organic composted chicken manure (local product), rice hulls and a glacial rock dust and basalt mix.

And especially neem seed meal or karanja meal.

Here are a couple of photos of the bins after having been painted.

  2. How do you access the ewc's?

  3. Those look incredible! Chunk did a great job building them, Superb quality.

You guys will be producing some of the finest castings. You just can't beat homemade!

  4. Very nice work there from Chunkdaddyo, i really like the topside bottom side ventilation. at a glance reminds me of a commercially built beehive.

  5. WD,

The front side has a door that opens up and gives access to the collection chamber. We will have plastic dish washing trays in the bottom to collect the EWC/vermicompost and will also use a small hand rake to rake the bottom side of the reactor chamber.

  6. Mrs. Dawgz had an idea that I'm going to check out today. There's some chain of stores at the local mall that sells storage bins and closet systems - some silly crap.

At any rate she tells me that they have flat plastic bins that slide under the bed. If that's the case it's an easy solution.

Beisdes, I just love going to the mall and hanging out and generally being annoyed by the Nordie Girls - post MILF, pre-widowed bored housewives from the West Hills.

All in the name of science - touching isn't it?

  8. Yeah buddy! Black gold is on the way chunk!

  9. Yoctown,

Along with the manures and compost food stocks, we'll be adding our typical soil inputs in the hopes of building mineral/nutirent rich vermicompost. With the use of the dynamic accumulator plants in our compost piles.........:D

  10. Those are some very clean looking bins you guys! Very nice. I would love to start one of my own but I am very confined for space as it is:( not to mention my neighbors would be wondering why the hell I need this for haha. I wonder if I could make a down scale version. What would you say would be the most important component to have in a vericomposting bin LD? Are they very messy because if not I might be able to shove one in my room if I really try hard.

  11. According to the experts, aged horse manure is the very best material to use as your bedding (i.e. main food stock) because it has the perfect Carbon-Nitirogen Ratio (25:1 - 30:1), is high in microbial activity and to quote my worm guy - "they really move through horse manure quickly"

The bins do not smell if you avoid kitchen scraps but I wouldn't necessarily want one inside my home.

"I love the smell of worm droppings in the morning. It smells like victory" - from my sequel to Apocalypse Now

And master worm bin builder, Chunk (I'm really hot on the alliteration deal this morning!) is working on a 2' x 2' version which is about the footprint of the plastic consumer worm recycling bins (Can-O-Worms, et al.) but Chunk's design/concept will actually give you a workable amount of castings to keep a medical garden in first-rate order.

  12. Downgirl,

The 2'x2' model would do well in a small area. You could have this inside your home if you used bagged compost, chicken/horse manure and a sprinkling of your various meals (seed meals that is lol).

Throwing kitchen scraps while a tried and true food stock is also a sure fire way to get fruit flies. Check out the pic of the 2'x2':

This one is going to be my next project once the big bins are up and running.

  15. A couple of years ago Toots & The Maytals were playing at a club in NE Portand and since I had the good stash I was appointed designate driver since I wouldn't be drinking.

There were 4 couples and we were in an old van with no windows (converted work van) and we pulled into the parking lot of the club and the rest of the group went in to get a table and I stayed to finish a chillum. I was in a hurry to join my wife and friends so I was huffing and puffing fast and furious.

When I opened the side door to get out of the van smoke poured out and as I was locking the door I turned around and saw 2 horse-mounted police doing their usual street patrol where the clubs are located.

"It's okay, I'm the designated driver"

  16. LD,

As a James Brown fan, I'm also a big fan of "funk" music. Have you ever heard of Bootsy Collins? Here's an interesting video I think you'll like.

  17. LD Apocalypse now is one of my all time favorites movies:) Along with Patton of course:p
I guess I will just be waiting and watching Chunk and taking notes along the way. Vermicompost is something I have been looking into a bit more. Where I live there is by far no shortage in horses so I already have a hook up for some fresh horsey poop:) You guys want to hear something funny:) I LOVE the smell of horse poo. I was obsessed with horses as a child and ran around naked on all fours acting like a horse for about 18 hours a day haha. True story :D
