How do you start seedlings for indoor soil grow

  1. Starting from seedling would starting in say a 5 gallon pot be better than starting in a dixie cup?
I think starting in the 5 gallon pot would be better better bc you won't have to transplant but it may be hard to keep moist etc

  2. Reasons not to start seedlings in 5gal pots:

-Germinated seeds can't handle even most mild fertilizers. Because of this, they're usually started in a fairly inert medium like seed starter soil or peat. To start in 5gal buckets, you'd either have to start the seeds in fertile soil, risking burning or death, or grow the plants for their whole lives in something like seed starter soil.

-When plant roots first touch the bottom of the pot, they change direction and start growing laterally. The roots can grow for some time this way before the plant becomes root bound. Because much of the root growth will be sideways instead of downward, stepping up pot sizes lasts the plants much longer before they become root bound than growing them entirely in one container.

-Fresh soil for flowering will be nutritious & aerated, likely growing healthier and/or larger plants than soil they've been using for months.

Reasons to start in full size pots:

-You are using feminized seeds so you are not wasting space, or space is not an issue.

-Every time you transplant you shock the roots and plant growth slows for a time. And transplanting is a pain in the ass.

-There is no reason why you have to fill your full size containers with pre-fertilized soil or use seed starter soil. Lots of places sell potting soil that is not pre-fert. Mix in lots of pearlite or vermiculite or both before you fill your pots to keep your growing medium aerated throughout all stages. This also makes a lighter soil mixture and roots grow faster. Pack soil to the top of the pots because there will be settlimg of the soil over time. And of course, use a good nutrient regimen starting when the plants are no longer seedlings.
