Marijuana bringing out Schizophrenia?

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by Jadd, Jun 23, 2011.

  1. So I'm kind of worried for my friend. He has a family history of mental illness and his uncle suffers from schizophrenia. While he is high he acts quite weird, being extremely paranoid, hearing noises, delusions (he makes shit up and when you deny it he becomes defensive about it), and he has told me that ever since he smoked he can do this thing where he just says random gibberish that rhymes. I think he also links this gibberish to real meanings and all that (I've looked this up, I think this is considered word salad). I'm very worried for him, we've been smoking for over a year now, almost every week, once a week. Will stopping the usage, stop these problems? Or are these just regular things that people do while high? Thanks.

EDIT: I've continued to research the link between marijuana and schizophrenia. He is only 16, and I have read that using marijuana during teen years greatly increases the chance to bring on schiz.

  3. nothing pointing at mj being a cause, but lots pointing at it being used to 'self medicate'.

if he is worse with it, then he needs to abstain...;)
(would suck though...mj helps people in so many ways..):(

  4. Yeah, this isn't exactly the place to ask if you have questions about anything possibly bad about marijuana. Alot of amateur scientists with an agenda here.

Not that I believe there is a connection, but I don't know. And I'm perfectly fine with admitting that and taking the chance for myself. I don't need to get online and reassure myself that I'm perfectly safe.

  5. It's probably whatever else he's on..

  6. Very obvious sign of schizophrenia. You don't need to post on a forum full of stoners to know that he needs help.

Ask him to consult a doctor or therapist for a real evaluation. Schizophrenia treatment has a much higher success rate the earlier you notice it.

  8. I think weed can possibly make your schizophrenia surface sooner than it would have naturally. Either way, How it happens is irrelevant. It's something you either have to live with, Or just get so doped up on prescription meds till you feel empty.
