What % Actually Know Why 4/20 is Weed Day?

Discussion in 'Seasoned Marijuana Users' started by J Dylan, Feb 14, 2006.

  1. Don't read this thread til you vote!!

Hahaha, I was just thinking about 4/20 and got curious. How many of us fellow stoners are actually aware of the explanation behind why we come together and celebrate on 4/20? I myself am pretty sure that it's because marijuana contains 420 compounds. And be honest! There's no reason to lie about not knowing such a miniscule fact that some of us have picked up along the path of righteousness. Errr... I meant stonerness. Let's hear it, what exactly is it that makes 4/20 the day of the year when we gather to celebrate god's gift to man kind... the plant cannabis sativa?

By the way... I'm rediculously stoned right now... so if I said anything that sounded stupid... that's why.

  2. In the early 1970s, a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California used to meet every day to smoke marijuana after school at 4:20 PM at the water tower atop San Rafael Hill. One of the teens, Steve Waldo, used the expression "420 Louie" in high school. The local story has these students doing radio skits with a pirate radio transmitter from the hill. One of these alleged skits was of kids getting caught smoking by the local police. They imitated the police radio call voice saying, "We have a 4:20 in progress on San Rafael Hill." The San Rafael police have asserted that there is "... no such code." These actual students, however, have never been identified individually. The time became a code word for the drug, and usage spread. 4:20 PM has since become a popular time to "smoke up".

  3. Haha... that is SO wrong dude. Marijuana has 315 compounds. So here's the truth, a couple years back (more than a couple) there was a group of stoners that would meet everyday at 4:20 after school to smoke up and that was their tradition. When they graduated it began to spread and more and more people started doing it, it then eventually evolved into a cult thing. There's a band called 420, a record label called 420 and so it is we are here on the 20th day of the 4th month on the 20th minute of the 4th hour that we smoke to celebrate our rich stoner culture.

4/20 is also Hitlers birthday thus associated with "the devil's weed".

I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but there's so many misconceptions about what 4/20 means... but it has no deep meaning. It just started with a couple of kids, just like you and me, smoking their ganja. And that's why 4/20 is so amazing, because it's OURS... we didn't pull it from somewhere else we created it by the simple gesture of getting together and smoking up...

  4. lol this thread is gonna be fun to watch... everyone will have different stories about how 4/20 originated. Which one is true? aahahaha.

  5. I've read many things like the above to things like 4:20 is proper tea time in Amsterdam... I think they are all myths. So it isn't like I haven't heard many ideas on where our 420 history comes from, but I still do not really know the answer. :smoke: Or at least haven't heard an answer I've accepted.

  6. didnt the cops bust a huge drug shippment on 420, plus they needed something to make 420 look better after hitlers brithday, ok i made that last one up but it works

  7. Haha, I just researched this and realized that the person who posted about Steve Waldo is right. there were a dozen or so kids at that highschool that made 4:20 their meeting time, near some statue... where they'd meet to smoke up. one of the kids was steve waldo... he's around 50 years old now... and he's been interviewed about all this lol. 420 compounds... the things that I come up with while high...

  8. holy shit, i forgot which reply, but dammmm

i never knew, but one of those stories are definatly something that needs to be made into a poster and ill put it in my room

  9. Haha wow this thread is going to be interesting... I thought it was police code: <420 Narcotics Assist>

:EDIT: Now that I know the truth about 420, I'll be sure to tell people what it really means when I hear them spreading BS

  10. It is not the police code for weed, it is not because it contains 420 chemical compounds, or any of that other urban legend B.S. Mr.Mojorisin is absoultly correct it came about because of those teenagers... I do find it humorus that the post was created by someone who didn't even know the real reason behind it himself... No offence, alot of people have all kinds of theories, and have heard all kinds of reasons behind it, but perhaps you should check your information before posting about it... Not many people seem to do this these days, and they end up making the same kinds of mistakes...But now you know... so now you can set the record straight for all of your friends.

  11. I have heard alot of things.. like "Bob Marleys death date", or "Hitlers Birthday", "police code", all of it.. I think it's retarted to be honest, most of the people that go around writting 420 on all of their things, or constantly saying "Smoke weed, 420!!" are the biggest posers out there. Most of them don't even smoke often, if at all. I never say it, write it, or even talk about it.. it's retarted

  12. I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I knew what it meant the first day I started toking. I smoked at 4:20 pm and then me and my friends decided to look it up on the net. That's pretty much the only reason why I know besides reading about it in High Times.

This dude is right. That's how it all got started. Then it got really popular among the dead heads (Grateful Dead).

You're entitled to your opinion, but I have to disagree man. I think it's really cool. It's a special time and a special day dedicated to only one thing: the herb. I don't know any other time that is recognized for a special activity. I don't know about you, but I never hear people shouting, "It's 2:20! Let's go skateboard dude!"

  13. It's "retarted" that you don't know how to spell retarded....

  14. i dont beleive there is a right and wrong story. I thought it was the high schoolers but I dont really mind. I dont need a damn time to tell me when 2 smoke. In the great words of rasta_man

  15. I always celebrate 4:20 with a bowl or a joint. Every single 4:20... would you say I don't smoke much? I don't quite understand where you're trying to come from, but that aside. The story has been confirmed...

I've heard some "specialists" try to tell me about how all pot smokers smoke at 4:20 to connect with everyone in the world smoking pot at the exact same time... sadly with time zones, this theory is kind of trashed. It's always 4:20 somewhere...

It's fun to go over the myths, everyone should list all the myths that they've heard.

The first myth I ever head about 4/20 was that was the day that Pot was made illegal. I never confirmed that but I'm 75% sure it's untrue.

  16. The first time I smoked, my older brother told me the Dead used to just say it at concerts to signal everyone to light that shit up.... cool story, but pretty sure it's not true...

  17. You must get really tired man. I know I'm not dedicated enough to wake up every morning at 4:20 am and smoke a bowl. :D

  18. i dont rele think nebody nos for sure or can prove that they know the origin but the most popular stories that iv heard is that a couple a teens could only smoke before 4:20 because their parents came home at this time or something like that but i like the rest of u can not prove that this is accurate.
