When presented with a controversial political issue on the news, I try to use the compare and contrast method to better understand what's being said, differentiate between shock value news and yellow journalism, and find the most reputable source of information before forming a concrete opinion. A. Comparing and contrasting information is key. 1. Not comparing and contrasting information like news sources, can lead to me having biased opinions that can be reflected onto my everyday life subconsciously. 2. With what I have observed, news stations have a political agenda well hidden within their content. 3. Comparing and contrasting news sources can lead to me having a better informational experience over-all that correlates with my political/social views. B. Shock value news and satirical news is giving a bad name to news stations everywhere. 1. When news stations compete with each other to get information to the public, a lot of the time the information is skewed and un-true. 2. Yellow journalism is common and usually easy to spot now that I'm well versed in comparing and contrasting. C. Finding a reputable source to base my political opinions off of is critical. 1. Though I sometimes think my thoughts are original ones, I have to remember they come from the opinions of news sources, or wherever I chose to get my information. 2. For example fox news has a more republican feel to it as Aljazeera has a more liberal feel. 3. Having a concrete opinion on a subject I did not analyze usually will end up in an inaccurate opinion. \n
