Processed/frozen food = the downfall of our health...

  1. ok im not health/organic nut but id just like to point something out...

processed and frozen food is going to be the downfall of man. you'd think in 2011 we'd be far more aware of our nutrition but it downright amazes me how much knowledge the average consumer lacks about what they are eating.

it also amazes me how people cant even read a nutrition fact chart!

have something frozen or pre-cooked/pre-made at your house? go ahead and grab it...ill wait......

take a look @ a few different things on the nutrition chart: total fat, saturated fat, and sodium (especially sodium).

i found a few canned goods in my own home in which half of a can of soup/beans (Forgot what it was now) was 42%....i said 42% thats 84% of your daily salt intake if you eat the whole can (it was a normal sized can)!

this is why so many people these days struggle with high blood pressure. not to mention instant mashed potatoes and frozen tv dinners (basically) but meant for families...youve seen those big bags of frozen pasta that you just dump into a pan...add a lil water...heat then serve.

this is all crap for those unaware.

im really starting to think it should be a crime to sell such food that is so terrible for you. the sad part is that its taking of the grocery stores..i see a lot more processed junk food at the grocery store these days than i do healthy choices.

i made this thread partly to rant but to turn it into something useful i thought we should use it to discuss healthier choices for all of us...possibly share recipes for some quick meals for those who think frozen/premade is the way to go..

maybe discuss some types of food that are actually good for you and such.

this way (@least on the forum here) we can fight the fight against eating genetically modified crap and mystery meat.

  2. I'm very aware of this, But I don't know what to say to the rest, It's like what you eat is programmed into you like computer (You must have it @ some time).

It's not hard to recondition yourself into healthy eating habits.

  3. Nothing wrong with frozen vegetables.

  4. Yea i stock the frozen freezers at my grocery store and the majority of people I see in my aisles are pretty much overweight. I feel ashamed stocking these foods for them. :(

Stocking the shit everyday I've read my share of nuturtion labels on some of the foods.

Banquet and Hungryman are just the worst, sodium is about 700mg of sodium. Frozen pasta bags of about 12-17oz varying on the brand is like 1000-1400mg of sodium per serving:eek:.

  5. Same thing I was thinking. I eat tons of frozen fruit and chicken too. Maybe the thread title was a little misleading?

  6. while the stuff is definitely awful for you, it serves a pretty essential purpose: cheap and easy food for those who may not have the money and/or time to cook meals from scratch.

have you seen the price of whole foods nowadays? it just keeps going up. you cant even get produce for cheap anymore. i dont know when the last time i saw grapes for under $2.99 a pound was, much less stuff that should cost pennies like herbs and lettuces.

i can buy a package of chicken helper for $2 and have a meal if i have chicken in the freezer. if i needed to buy all of that stuff to make it from scratch it would be well over $10.

maybe its because my family has always been poor, but we have never had an abundance of things on hand just to be able to make things from scratch. we are always missing a crucial component, and when it comes time to cook we, 9/10 times, discover that its so much cheaper just to go with the processed stuff.

thankfully enough, my aunt who i live with now is one of those people who cooks from scratch always. i can definitely see a difference in how i feel just from eating her food these past few months

  7. i seen grapes the other day for $1 per lb at one store and $2 per lb at another store.

im not convinced that buying processed crap is cheaper in the long run unless you live off of top ramen thats $1 per pack.

if fruits and veggies are so expensive how easy would it be to grow your own? its not like its mj and you have to hide it...you can plant anywhere...apartment balcony/patio, your backyard at your house. etc.

chicken and fish arent all that expensive compared to red meat...

i truly think its cheaper to cook things from scratch...maybe not going organic (thats very expensive)...if not at the checkout line then itll save you in medical bills to fix your diabetes, high blood pressure, being overweight and all the extra problems it causes you.

and isnt it amazing how when you eat fresh food that you feel better? i know i do...eating those processed foods sucks the energy/life out of you. who would want to eat something that makes them feel bad? i think thats the people that have never ate well before.

im really no nutrition nut but i know how to read the nutritional facts of a product and determine how good or bad it is for me...i feel like ive taken too many gambles with my health in terms of living off of fast food/processed/canned crap. i went from skinny to FUKKIN OBESE and back skinny again twice in my life and im not going back...no way.

id stay away from frozen meat...especially since some of the crap that goes into frozen meats/fish,etc.

for example my mother still buys this crappy frozen fish that i told her wasnt good to eat as the ingredients read, "tilapia fish, and CO (carbon monoxide to preserve color)" (think i spelled tilapia wrong...idk) but the point is that you sholdnt be eating anything that theres an alarm for should the levels be too high in your home (as it can kill you)... her response, "well the CO will evaporate when its cooked"...

thats like if a condom company put hiv in their condoms to "keep them fresh" and claimed the hiv would evaporate when you open the package...would you still buy them? yea i know carbon monoxide and hiv are two different things but it shows how insane that concept is...i wouldnt eat anything treated with carbon monoxide...id just go buy some fresh tilapia considering how freakkin cheap tilapia is...$2-3 per lb...come on...how much cheaper can you get it frozen per lb? lol

i agree with this too. i use to work in a grocery store and it make me more aware of how much crap there is versus things that are actually good for you. the salt content is usually so high that i cant believe people still buy these things...you can eat half or more of your salt intake in just ONE meal...what about the other 3 of the day?

ive seen frozen corndogs with 30% of your daily salt in just ONE corndog...lets be honest how many people just eat ONE corn dog? more than likely you'll eat two...so theres 60% of your salt in not even one complete meal...

hot dogs are crap but still...proves a point.

those frozen dinner meals are all 20% and higher in total fat and the salt content is just unbelievable. how are people shocked that they have high blood pressure? my mother was NEVER a cook..her idea of cooking is going into the freezer...opening a package of whatever...put it in the oven or skillet or whatever and heat then serve...its utter crap.

thankfully i dont have to eat that junk anymore as i moved out but still...i watch her and the rest of my family's eating habits and it just blows my mind what this food does to them but they always rationalize it or justify it.

its not because they're poor...its because theyre just simply lazy. period.

people probably shouldnt talk crap about their own mothers but she truly is just a fat slob who looks pregnant even though shes not...this also is topped off by the fact that she hasnt exercised a day in her life past like 20-something yrs old...drinks starbucks (those cold ice cream in a cup like drinks) religiously...does not 1 physical activity...so she just porks on up & wont listen to reason.

whats funny is i remember being 16 or so and instead of my mother forcing me to eat fruits and veggies i was trying to force her to. she never pushed fruit/veggies on us. this was the mother who also use to feed me and my fam micky d's 3+ times a week when i was 9-11 yrs old.

i got so fat from that crap that the doc made me go to a nutrition specialist who was telling me my eating habits are out of control supposedly but i was too young at the time to realize that the fast food was crap...of course my mom never told the specialist what she fed us for dinner 3+ times a week and i didnt consider it as being the cause...i just thought i was fat for no reason.

i was like 180 in jr high school over this...180! thats close to what i weigh now as an ADULT.

it was just a combination of the fast food and processed foods. i been over to my mothers house and its still like that...80% of her groceries are either canned, processed, or frozen foods...its just a shame.

im so glad i found the key to being healthy...and yes i still hold all that against her as i thought it was really bad parenting on her part to give us basically poison that could have hurt us...i wasnt the only one...she made my dad shoot up to 260-270 eating that crap. he doesnt even eat that junk anymore and its down to a more healthy 190. it was really taking a toll on our lives...this is just proof that its all crap.

i agree that frozen veggies arent bad for you but in my experience thats about it...a good majority of anything down the frozen the section is just salt and/or sugar and fat. that seems to be the main nutritional values in those foods & god knows how its made or whats in it really.
