Not really though. Hes mainly talking about paintings; and speaking as an artist, when you are painting someone all you need is a rough outline to start a painting... and that takes about 5 minutes, usually less. After that the person you are painting can kick rocks for all you care, you got what you need. If artists wanted to paint someone with a smile it is literally as simple as whether they want to put a smile on the portrait or not. For the most part you are right about photographs though, but even those old photos were able to be edited in post production with smiles if the photographer chose to through various methods such as "airbrushing", super imposing other photographs on top, re-photographing, or painting over top. Many other crude methods also developed in the mid 1800's to do these tasks. The results were a lot better than you might expect. So I think it has a lot more to do with what looks better and is quicker to do than being physically limited by a camera exposure time or a stiff model. Keep in mind, hes talking about portraits in fucking castles; kings and queens and shit, if those people wanted a god damn smile in their portrait they would have got one.
yeah I suppose, that's just the explanation my photojournalism professor gave us last semester. early photos had extremely long exposure times and they were printed on glass or tin, and editing them was possible but it was a hassle, and most people couldn't afford it. I guess for paintings in castles and shit they probably just didn't give a fuck about smiling. As for kanye, I'm not really a fan of his anymore... He was pretty much my favorite rapper ever growing up. I mean I guess he still is based off the strength of his older albums, but his music isn't really for me anymore. I don't have a problem with him growing as an artist, and I don't expect him to just make College Dropout over and over again, but idk. He's just lost me the last few years. Like his first 3 albums, especially the first two, felt like he was coming from the same place we were coming from. Now he's coming from like, fucking Kim Kardashian in Venice and shit. There's not really any soul in his music anymore. and he can't sing, so as good hearted and "touching" as "only one" was, it was still a shitty song. Plus his ego used to be something normal people could get behind, like he might say some cocky shit but it was the shit you were thinking. Now it's just gotten to the point where his arrogance is an internet meme. I'm sure I'll buy his next album, and I hope I like it, but I have extremely low expectations for it.
