I just germinated and planted a seed, and its got its cotyledons along with the first two tiny jagged leafs and is about an inch tall. When is the best time to begin my nutrients in my reservoir? thanks and please help!! I have an afghan seed going in a bubbleponics bucket with the 315 cfl lightbank going overhead...

I was planning on waiting until the 3rd set of leaves... Hope that helps. I would think that the soonest you could do it would be when the roots touch the water?

Can anyone else weigh in here?

Hi..

I would recommend that you start your nutients at 1/4 to 1/2 strength in the beginning. Then work you way up to full strength over the next couple of weeks. This way the babies can get used to the new nutrient solution.

Good Luck

Thanks alot everybody. The first jagged adult leaves are bigger than the cotyledons now so i think i'll change my reservoir today and add 1/4 strength grow nutes and let you guys know how it goes. I appreciate the help so much guys.

That is really odd because mine are only 5 days old and after reading this I did the same thing today! :D

I only upped my ppm 50 though but I will report back. I will say I was rather impressed to see roots in my water before the 2nd set of leaves have came in.

Seedlings don't require nutrients for the first 10-14 days in hydro. Start at 1/4 strength. Make sure that once you start using nutes you adjust ph to the 5.8-6.0 range. :smoke:

Holy Shit man thats intense! mine was a seed like a week and a day ago and now its about an inch or so high with second leaves twice the size of the cotyledons but not super huge yet. I can't see roots through the cups yet but I should before long here :D I read on the roseman thread about how you can go from sprouted seed on up in the bubbleponics setup so i figured i might as well give it a shot. I threw quarter strength nutes in there yesterday as i stated in the last post, and it seems to be doing fine with the nutes today as its gotten quite a bit taller and the leaves are still all bright green so i'd say its gonna pull through...

I was planning on changing the reservoir in 7-10 days adding quarter strength nutes again however I think I'm going to add another quarter strength nutrient dose the day following the first dose. Sound like a safe plan to any of you who are experienced?

Oh by the way its in a bubbleponics setup with the top feed hoses going, sorry im not sure if i stated that before...that explains why its not dead with no roots coming out of the cups lol just clarifying...

Lol i think you're already ahead of me...then again afghan is known for being a short stocky plant...as soon as i get a charger for my camera i'll start a grow log or at least throw a few pics up on this thread...good luck to you too man. What kind of lighting are you using? i have the stealth hydro 315w cfl light bank on mine for now, i think im gonna get more cfls in little reflectors for supplemental side lighting...

I'm using 400 watt hps + 250 watt MH all the way thru. I am only using 3 1/2 inch net pots though so that could be why my roots beat yours to the water.

Yeah for sure. Mine are 4" net pots. I have a bleach white root poking out about an inch from the net pot today. You can clearly see the second set of leaves starting to go now too, so i'd say its safe to say the 1/4 nutes is doing them pretty good.

My seed first popped on the 1st and I put it in a rockwool cube. 2 days later I had a sprout. 4 days after that I transfered it to my DWC bubble bucket with about 1/4 strength nutrients, read at 300 ppm. Started to really grow fast, however I underestimated the root growth and lowered the water level too soon and over night it got real droopy. Fixed the water level and she has been recovering. I have a 10 inch net pot so I suppose the roots take a lil longer to get through all that hydroton.

I have seedlings about 2 weeks old.
I should be adding nutrients now?

The nutrients I got came with a chart on when to add what, week 1, week 2 etc

Do I follow these guidelines for the seedlings or use a weaker dose?

When the chart refers to week 1, week 2 etc, does week one mean as soon as the seedlings sprout?

This thread is old and dead so i doubt these guys will answer you back, but you should go with 1/4 strength solution. If they respond fine, you can increase to 1/2 strength a few days later. Use the chart as a guideline, but trust your eyes too.

And i can't answer about your chart. I have a different one.

Quick tip: When seedlings are a few inches tall, you can gently bend the stem back and forth. It will help make it strong and support growth in later stages. I got that from a book.

Yeah, I noticed date once sent.

Thanks for your response though..

Appreciate it.

I have a new issue now maybe, my light flickers sometimes, only very slightly.

I've read some stuff online, some say it goes away after a "burning in" period..

It's only been on about 15 hrs, flickering went away not long after turning on, although when I woke up this morning, it was flickering again slightly.. It's gone away for now.. hope it's ok.

Any tips?

It's a 600w air cooled metal halide ( no fan for cooling hooked up yet, for the light)
