Obviously it's gonna get hot on long phone calls or when you're gaming, but is it ok to stay that way for a long time? Sometimes when I'm playing a game for extended periods of time I get this idea in the back of my head that the constant heat will hurt the phone.

Any reassurance on this?

I have never ever felt any heat coming from my iPhone regardless of usage. I'd see if you can get Apple to give you a new phone.

if you update to the most recent firmware. 4.2. the over heating problem will be fixed. untill then dont worry about it untill you see a temperature warning pop up on your phone=)

Yeah I talked to someone at the Apple store and they said it's normal, unless you actually get a heat warning message, which I've never seen. BTW I have an iPhone 4 on the 4.2.1 firmware.

I never saw that on my iphone, I had the 3G and it overheated all the time. Either playing music or just sitting there, it would heat up. I called apple and they said anything over 109 degrees is "overheating" in there book.
