Chemo - Jordan of the Islands and Atomic Shiva - Dr. Atomic dirt grow

I have learned a lot from this forum and felt that my grow may interest others. (maybe not, but I am doing things a little differently)

I react badly to the chemicals used in hydroponics so I grow in dirt. Yes I know you can clean them out, but for me it is just better not to have them in the first place.

I used to be an outdoor grower. The license allowed for 10 plants. I couldn’t make enough to do the year (stupid no-nutes) so I re-applied for an indoor-outdoor license. I can grow 19 indoor plants, and 5 outdoor plants, just not at the same time. If it works out indoor, I won’t have to bother with outdoor (although I like the free light)

My plan is to have 6 mothers. So far I have chosen:

Chemo (Jordan of the Islands)
Plants are dark green, medium height and big budded. The smoke is strong, very tasty but not as stinky as other varieties.
Flowering Time: Indoor 6 - 8 weeks
Approx Yield: Moderate to Heavy
(Doesn’t sound like much, but I have had it from the compassion club, and it is unbelievable for pain (and puts me to sleep as well).

Romulan (Next Generation Seeds).
Romulan is a legend, a medical and personal favorite. Now on the 8th Generation back cross, this B.C. original has increased in size and vigor. A squat growing strain known for its overwhelming narcotic stone. It has large dark green leaves, purple stock and leaf stem with frosty buds that are hard and dense. Strong piney smell, a must have for the connoisseurs' head stash. Pure breeding genetics. As seen in Cannabis Culture and High Times. Flowering Time: Indoor 8 weeks Approx Yield: 250 - 350 grams per square meter
(Romulan is well known as a medicinal grade bud)

Atomic Shiva (Dr. Atomic)
Looking for pain relief? Couchlock? F**ked up? Heavy lethargic stone?

Approx Yield: 70 - 100g per plant

(OK, so I bought it because they used the words ‘F**ked up’. It’s been along time since pot has rattled my cage. I am safe with the first two for pain, but never hurts to have options.)

I use a mix of black earth, cow manure and compost (18 liters initially - equal parts). I just water with my softened well water, and after each 4 weeks I add an inch of the soil mix to the pots (kind of like feeding them).

All the pot I am choosing veges for a month and flowers for 8 weeks, so I can grow a mix without worrying about special needs. My plan is not to have a continuous grow. I have set up a grow room for the 6 mothers, and another for 12 production plants. In theory I will be able to select the types I want and grow them as required. We will see.

The production room has a 600w HPS and can hold 12, 5 gallon buckets. Both the rooms drain to a sump pump, and I have a 50 foot water wand. The idea is once I clone a production run from the mothers. I place the clones in the production room 18/24 for a month. Then switch to 12/12 for two months and grow 6 month worth of pot. I take a few months off (just caring for the mothers and cutting a few clones) and then start up again, with the same or a different mix of plants.

I am trying to keep it simple. I am not trying to get the most bud possible. I am modestly hoping for 50 grams a plant once I get the whole thing up and running. A single production run will then yield 600 grams, which is about 6 months for me. Two runs (plus a little from the 5 in the summer) and I think I am good. If I had to I woud move up to a 1000w.

I believe the genetics will take care of the quality, and all I need to do is provide a reasonable growth environment. Having said that, any simple, clean techniques (especially during flowering) would be appreciated.

I am new to indoor growing (tried last year but fried everything that went into the too small ‘flower’ room) but not to pot or growing it.

This picture is of the first 8 ladies. 4 Chemo and 4 Atomic Shiva. They are 25 days into 12/12. They were about 11-13 inches tall then I started the 12/12, and they are 21-23 inches now, so they have grown about 10 inches in the first almost four weeks. My room is tall so I have no worries even if they doubled in size (I wish).

(Yes, I over watered them a little in weeks 4 and 5, but they seem happy now)

sterces, great story, dude. hey the romulan you say has a strong piney smell? do you think it would be too strong to grow in a house and keep under the radar with visitors? Can you cover the stench, say, with some good incense? Or is there still the distinct skunk MJ smell?

also, yes you may have overwatered a bit, but I really think you should try to give your plants some supplements. Maybe some Seaweed Extract and Fish Extract (Hydrolysate), maybe some Fish Bone Meal top dressed? Just something I initially thought, but see if some of the more proven guys on GC chime in and agree or have more solid advice.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I only have the Romulan seeds right now (The current grow is Chemo and Shiva) so I don’t know about the stink from Romulan yet. That information is from the KindSeed web site. I posted what the seed site had for each of the strains. I will do another grow report on the Romulan if this turns out to be fun. I just plant the germinated seed in the 5 gallon pot and let the 600hps do its thing. (simple)

For this grow, at ½ way through flower the Chemo and Shiva don’t put up much of a smell yet. No ‘skunk’ at all.

As for supplements, I hope to get some simple effective suggestions for flowering because that is what the garden is doing right now. I will look into the ones you mentioned. Would they be specifically for flowering?

As for the ‘lucky’ part. The fact that I need it by definition makes me unlucky, I am just more lucky than the person who needs it and doesn’t have the license. Is it just me, or is the quality of good luck going down hill these days?

YW sterces. If you have bud porn to share you have definitely come to the right place. Nothing but Herbophiles hanging out in the O zone man! Beautiful plants and they look mighty proud. Crap! I got a Hermi; Middle lady in the front row (one of the Chemo). I cut off 6 male sites, all sprouting directly from the branch joints on the main stem.

During pre-flower I thought this was a male, but read somewhere to give them all a chance to prove themselves under 12/12. When it stated flowering I was happy I waited. Not so sure now.

I had a Shiva display Hermi during pre-flower as well. It is long gone.

Oh well a few seeds won’t hurt, I will have to wear my glasses more often when I am visiting the ladies

Your grow looks like it will be a fun one. You are definitely taking the right attitudes toward the plant, in my opinion. Good genetics too. Can't wait for the closeups man!

Careful about how you set your yield goals. 600g from 600w is a tricky little feat, even when you're growing in a serious production enviroment. I don't want to sound like I'm trying to piss in your cheerios or anything. But I always think it's a shame when someone is let down by their yields, simply because they were asking too much of their room.

sterces, sorry to hear about the hermies, but don't be disappointed. You have a hellofa grow going and lots of potential for a great harvest. How things looking as far as your initial concerns? Let us know when you get a chance.

Funny, (not funny ha, ha) I was thinking today that I might have too high hopes for the grow. Looking at them I just can’t see them getting that fat. (50g per plant is high, maybe 30-35?) I console myself with the fact that anything over 300 is more than I need in 3 months, so if I can get 25g per plant (once I am up to 12 ladies) I will still be in the ‘don’t pay for it’ category. Thanks for the dose of cold water, setting realistic expectations if half the battle in enjoying life. If you are always expecting too much, you will never be happy.

Regardless, I am looking forward to vaping some clean, powerful bud.

I am taking the hermie (only one made it through to the production room ) in stride. (Full disclosure: I initially ran a Lowryder run through to test the system. Excellent usable bud in six weeks instead of the advertised 8. I kept a male and female and let them do their thing in the some-day-to-be-mother-room. I have a couple of hundred seeds, and the pot from the seed mother was fine. So a few seeds will no degrade the product, just the quantity. I have no ‘red’ hairs, so I think the hermie was shooting blanks anyway!)

As for my initial issue with clean flower additives; I have decided to try the molasses in the next watering (this weekend). Only 3.5 weeks left at that point. Let me know if I am nuts because I would just as easily use plain water.

Here is this weeks look at the ladies. They have only grown an inch, but it was all bud!

Here is a picture of what the Chemo bud looks like (some are still all green). If this is what they look like at 4.5 weeks into the flower, I can’t imagine what they will look like when finished. I can hardly wait!

Thanks Sam. I am holding out on the best ones till the end.

In the mean time, here are a couple of shots of my smallest Shiva. A very nice plant, just not as large as some others.

The other one is my smallest Chemo. When I moved the Hermi to the back row and promoted the smallest Chemo to the centre stage, she started to produce pink/purple hairs! On the main cola and one of the side buds. I had pot that did that once, it was Burmese. Good pot, just didn’t like the taste.

I decided against additives for this grow. With insufficient knowledge I could just as easily hurt as help. They are doing fine so I am leaving them alone.

Hi,

I thought I would post some pics of my tallest Shiva and Chemo.

With the Shiva was difficult to get a clear picture with the flash, with the Chemo it was pretty much impossible. I had to photoshop these to get them to show the bud.

I am going to have to figure out a better way to take pictures. With so much reflective white on the buds, the flash isn't working out!

Poor pictures or no, you can those things getting seriously frosty. That chemo has some gorgeous colours on her. Who all is carrying JOTI seed stock, that's reputable?
