36 dollars of gas for free!

But anyways I went inside, told the guy "four-fourty on pump six" handed him 4 singles, 2 dimes, and 20 pennies. I went outside to pump and to my surprise the gas didn't cut off at 4.40. Or 10. Or 20. Or even 40 for that matter. It went all the way up to 40.40 worth of gas. I don't know if thats where my tank topped out or if he just added an extra 0 in there because it was enough to fill my tank. I kept looking inside to see if he noticed but he never looked at me and they have the intercom system so he could have just told me to stop you know?
So besides the severe awesomeness of this situation, I can't help but feel bad. I stole you know? I don't want that guy to get in trouble, but at the same time, its not like he can ungive me the gas you know? How was I supposed to know it would go that long? I could've gotten in my car and been on the phone (even though its dangerous) and never realized I was pumping to much.
So my question is 2 parts, first, has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them? I've gotten 1 dollar more than I paid for one time, but never 36 lol. And the second part is, did I do the morally wrong thing? Should I have stopped pumping as soon as I noticed it as past what I paid for? You decide GC, I can't figure out if it was karma, luck, reparation for good deeds in the past or what. Maybe someone behind me swiped their card and said to fill it up because they saw me using pennies lol.

Actually its cool that you're questioning just over free gas. I think the guy just messed up when he put however much on the machine or whatever.

Thats what I figured, but like benwise said, I feel for that dude, hopefully he counts the drawer himself and doesn't get fucked for that. Oh well I'm off to go drive just for the sake of it
Are you serious? You only had $4.40 for gas and now because you got free gas you're just going to waste it? I would save that shit dude.

I'm only goin on a little back country cruise, 15 miles isn't gonna kill me. Celebration you know, almost like a victory lap
Weird. I hate driving, that is the last thing I would want to do to celebrate free gas.

With that kind of attitude, you'll always be short on money. Not that money is everything, but be prepared.I'm only goin on a little back country cruise, 15 miles isn't gonna kill me. Celebration you know, almost like a victory lap

It's fine, you didn't steal. The only reason to feel even partially bad is that the cashier will probably get fucked for having a register $36 short ;\...
Man, I guess although I don't feel old, I am getting old, because sometimes I don't get the younger generation. Really? He didn't steal? How is that? You gonna use the logic of if the pump don't stop it ain't stealing?
it doesn't matter if the pump didn't stop, if he was in his car, if he was in the bathroom. It was the OP's responsibility to only pump what he purchased. Because the pump didn't stop doesn't mean it isn't stealing. Its called accountability. There is a certain amount that is actually required of the customer, like only pumping what is paid for, regardless of if the pump stopped or not. The attendant made a mistake. A mistake does not legally place the blame of what the OP did on the attendant. It was a mistake. The OP also made a mistake. He pumped too much gas. A mistake which would make him legally required to pay.
Now I am not judging here one way or the other. Not telling the OP to go pay, not telling him he is a bad person. So no getting on me for something I am not doing.
But make no mistake about it, the $36 in gas you pumped into your car was infact stealing if you did not pay for it. What you do about it is entirely up to you.

By being happy about it and using it when you actually need it... considering he had to use pocket change to afford gas and all.

I think I may be the only one agreeing with you.
What the OP did was stealing. Not only gas, but money from someone's paycheck.
I hope nothing bad happens on your "victory lap". Karma is a bitch sometimes.
