The Wisconsin State Medical Society (SMS) has been a thorn in the side of Wisconsin's medical cannabis movement for decades. While doctors in clinics often discuss cannabis with patients or even recommend patients use it, the SMS has been hostile to medical cannabis, providing testimony against at every hearing held by the WI State Legislature going back many years. The face of the Society's compassion-free position has been Dr. Michael Miller. Dr. Miller made numerous misleading, incorrect and untrue statements during his Dec. 15, 2009 testimony for the combined Health Committee hearing on current legislation before the State Legislature AB554/SB368, the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act (JRMMA). For four days in April 2010, medical cannabis patients and their supporters protested outside the SMS Fundraiser and Annual Meeting at Monona Terrace Convention Center in Downtown Madison. This year, activists again plan to protest at the 2011 State Medical Society Conference, being held at Monona Terrace the weekend of April 7-10. Please join us this Saturday afternoon as medical cannabis patients and supporters return for another peaceful informational picket at Monona Terrace. Activists plan to be there Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 12 noon to 3:00pm. New research and clinical trials continue to demonstrate that medical cannabis is a safe and effective medicine whether smoked, vaporized, ingested in capsules, foods, tinctures, topical salves or other methods. It is unconscionable for a Medical Society to continue to oppose a proven safe and effective medicine used by mankind for millennia. Their position means the state's largest physician's group continues to support the current law that criminalizes Wisconsin medical cannabis and the patients who need it today - Seniors, Veterans, the Sick, Disabled and the Dying!

City of Madison honors Ben Masel, names April 20th annual day of honor - Madison norml | Examiner.com The City of Madison, WI has honored the life and work of Ben Masel by designating April 20 annually as "Ben Masel Day".
MADISON: Medical cannabis supporters will gather next Tuesday at the King St. corner of the State Capitol to remember victims of medical marijuana prohibition. This year will mark the third year for the vigil, which runs from 4-6pm. The vigil will feature tributes to patients who fell victim to medical cannabis prohibition as well as some tasty dobro playing by Mark Shanahan. Shanahan will begin the event by performing the Wisconsin medical cannabis anthem, "Legal Medicine Blues" at 4pm. The list of names of those who passed away without legal access to medical cannabis read at the vigil grows each year. Last year the passing of Madison medical cannabis patient activist Mary Powers still hung heavy on friends at the event. This year, attendees will be remembering longtime Madison activist Ben Masel, who died April 30 after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. There's plenty of talk, and you can be involved with it by attending the NORML meetings in Madison on the 2nd and forth Mondays of the month at the Wil-Mar Center on Jenifer St at 7. Meetings are outside if weather permits, otherwise inside. There was a medical marijuana bill introduced to the legislature that was up to vote last year. The bill made it there because of the efforts of Wisconsin NORML. However, the legislators elected not to bring it to a vote. If more people were active, it could have forced legislators to bring it to a vote where it likely would have passed. The previous governor, Jim Doyle, would have signed the bill into law while the current governor has stated he would not. That doesn't stop NORML from advancing the movement whether it be talking with representatives or educating the community. Taking an active part in local NORML groups seems the only way to advance the idea of medical marijuana within the state.
Seriously our pot laws are horrible. They put me, a non violent smoker, next to attempted murderers and heroin junkies. I'm trying to go to school and the police have my car impounded because they thought I sold a little bit of weed. I've never hurt anyone in my life and this is how I'm treated? *spits on wisconsin*
Council favors ticket for small amounts of pot The La Crosse Common Council has passed an ordinance that decriminalizes possession of a small amount of marijuana. The council Thursday night passed a local law that allows law enforcement to ticket, not criminally charge a person for first-time possession of 7 grams of marijuana or less.
