Grow Tent design help, please?

  1. Hey GC,

I am in the process of setting up my grow tent. I have seen different setups going on for a grow tent but wanted some opinions before I get to setting everything up and ordering a last few pieces. My tent is 32" x 32" x 63" using a 400W HPS/MH Cool Tube. Im looking to balance the issues of Heat, Smell and Fan Noise as this would need to be a little stealthy. I would also like to get away with buying as few fans as possible, the fan sucking air out would be (Soler and Palau TD-150 6"/150MM Inline Mixed Flow Duct Fan), the other fans I would go much cheaper, but this would be main fan sucking the air out of the tent. So I have two basic designs, see the thumbnail and let me know which one would work out best. Also if I hang an extra carbon scrubber from the ceiling, no fan or anything just hanging, would this help at all with smell or be a waste of time.

    Thanks for your help

  2. nice setup you've got there.

the fan should be able to clear out the entire grow space twice every 5 minutes i beleive so take 32*32*63 then divide the answer by 60 and thats your cfm.

and you dont need an intake fan.

passive intake works. as the suction of the main vent will be enough.

other then that i think your ready to flower some ladies!

Thanks man! Would you suggest the setup on the Left (lets call that A) or the setup on the right (lets call that B), Setup B cuts out one fan which to me is ideal, I just didn't know if setup provides better overall cooling or if there was any advantage/disadvantage to each setup. I was thinking the intake fan would not be needed, it's easy enough to setup if I ever did need it.

i havent ever seen anyone attach the carbon filter to their light before to use for venting.

if thats what the image is saying.

and your gonna need a small desk fan or computer fan to circulate air and strengthen stems.

you can suck through the filter or have the filter outside attached to the vent and use the vent to exhaust the hot air, and that vent you have is good enough to do that as it will keep good suction.

if you wanna suck through the filter i wouldnt attach it to the light.

after looking at the images again id go with A.

that should be adequate to cool your light.

    and have good exhaust aswell

I do the same thing. No intake fan though. Looks good man!! Keep that light cool and make sure your exhaust fan is creating negative pressure w/ the filter attached, that way no stink gets out. I wouldn't use an intake fan at all. Your tent probably has passive intakes, and I'd just get a cheap inline duct fan to cool the light, then a BIG one for the filter and exhaust. My tent is 2x4x7ft and I use a 190cfm can fan w/ filter for exhaust, (the one from HTG for about $130) and the 6 inch inline duct fan they have for about $30. Temps stay in the mid 70's, only a few degrees warmer than my apartment w/ a 400w light.

I was looking at this DIY Carbon filter and that is where I got the idea or attaching the filter to the hood. Seems like it would be cost effective, less ducting, one less fan, but I am thinking having the two fans (one on fan ducting to cool fan, and the other connected to the carbon filter pulling out the air).

  7. So it sounds like the diagram on the left would be the best bet with a cheap inline fan to cool the light and the Soler and Palau fan to cool the tent/attached to the carbon scrubber. Good Deal! If anyone has it set up like the diagram on the left please let me know how it works.

  8. What's cool about doing it the way on the left is that the air that's cooling the light isn't coming from inside the tent, so it'll be cooler. On top of that, by being able to cool the light independently of the exhaust fan, you can run CO2 while still cooling the light, and all the CO2 won't get exhausted, (assuming you turn off the exhaust fan).

  9. If you are going to use a 400w, try a Ceramic Metal Halide as you get the best of both spectrums and they run cooler than HPS. I am currently using them in my grow, check my sig.
