How can someone be wrong if everyone thinks they're right?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by jlotz123, Jun 22, 2010.

  1. Do you ever think about that? Everyone thinks their way of thinking is the best way, and the only way. Anyone who opposes, is considered stupid, ignorant, self centered or the other 20,000 words.

I'm now stuck in this mindset and it's killing me. I keep thinking everything I think is just me thinking i'm right again.

  2. You know you're right!

  3. I consider it a good thing to question the way you think.

  4. just the fact that there are so many different kinds of people vouching for a certain religion or aspect of life PROVES, and i mean its like a slap in the face, that THEY ARE ALL MOSTLY WRONG

if you have 10 nuts and all ten say that they are each something different, one a donut, one a peanut etc. but they all JUST NUTS (literally and figuratively) they are all wrong to some degree

people need to stop looking outside, or without for answers, THEY DO NOT LIE ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT WITHIN.

for those that have realized this bravo! for that is something of great in todays society to overcome, and it is our responsibility to show people what they hide on the inside

  5. Exactly

    /thread

    lol

  6. There are objective ways to prove if someone is right.

  7. thats why descarte has the approach he did. question everything. he isn't one of my favorite philosophers because some of his other stuff is a bit out there, but i do like a lot of his ideas. everything should be questioned, from your own views, to your friends, to those written in textbooks.

and i use this approach a lot with music. i love music, a lot - its my biggest passion, especially as a musician. theres certain kinds i love, certain kinds i dont mind, and certain kinds i hate... having said that, nothing pisses me off more than when someone tells someone else theyre an idiot and their music sucks... i've never understood that. if we agree musics good, than its good - let people enjoy whatever kind they like, even if you think you have certain proof that their preferred music sucks (they like it, for whatever reason, so let em like it). ahh, its early n im half asleep n rambling. hopefully something good came out there

  8. Never speak for everyone, for there are always better ideas coming from somewhere, someone, and this has always been the case.

Einstein was wrong, Tesla was wrong, Stephen Hawking is wrong...at times. All of them. Even geniuses make mistakes.

The most scientific answers they provided are incomplete truth at best. Even the laws of motion are wrong at times.

Truth is, the only way to be correct, or right, is by knowing the truth, and we still haven't realized many truths, so to believe that we are right more than we are wrong would be a lie of epic proportion, or 'incorrect'.

To question, and to seek the core of purest truth, is the reason we exist as individuals who work best in groups. We all have beliefs that differ by degree, but it is entirely possible, and highly probable, that almost everyone is wrong at least as much as they are right, so we always look for the next level of awareness. We combine, and refine, into infinity, the knowledge we compile, and always try new ways of seeing into, and beyond, the old beliefs.

I think it was Einstein who said there is more we don't yet know about the universe, than we have learned up until now, and I believe he was correct on that one. But I could be incorrect.

  9. great post! and, not only am i going to get bashed for this, and called a hypocrite lol, but.... i absolutely hate stephen hawking... imo he's considered the smartest man only because so many people say "he's the smartest man."

  10. Naw Stephen Hawking is far from "the smartest man" he's just popular in culture. Within the physics community he's a high up but he's probably not even a top 20. There are many more greater minds than his currently living they just aren't as known to the world.

  11. agreed - but not only do i think that, i just generally dislike the man and most of what he has to say. i'm starting to think half of what he says, he's told to say, now. I particularly dislike that new show hes on on discovery or history(forget), or whatever that statement he made that we should avoid looking for aliens and that they would be hostile and destroy us.... thats absolute bullshit imo. hawkings is a robot! lol. but thats for another thread. maybe i'll make one

  12. The greatest minds know to be open to the other great minds.

Reason & logic. Test & experimentation. Research.

I don't even know what smart and stupid is anymore.

People treat smart as if it's a real thing, as if it's something you can pick up and consume.

It's just an opinion, or maybe i'm wrong? Is someone wrong only when they can look back at what they once thought and say ""Omg, what was I thinking back then??""

What if they never look back and think it was stupid for thinking that, does that make them wrong?

It's like wrong is something that doesn't comprehend in our head, which is like our own universe. If it's foreign, get rid of it. There are people who've never felt what I felt, and there are people that i've never felt what they felt.

If I never felt what they felt, how can I even understand their perspective? Why is it that people want others to suffer so much? Revenge? Payback? Is this our minds subconsciously trying to sculpt someone elses universe into ours? Or are we trying to do the good thing and make them suffer so they can have the feeling that we have......in return to have a greater understanding?

    PHUCK PHUCK PHUCK

    So many fucking questions.

  15. I know this question is like from 5 years ago but I've been wondering the exact same questions as the questioner. I came across this thread through google searches. I made an account on gc just to post on here. I don't smoke weed. Just a deep thinker looking for answers. This question has been mind boggling. How can anyone really be wrong if they think they're right? Everyone does things presuming that the benefit outweighs the harm which makes them believe they're right. Arguments arise when two people think they are right and the other is wrong. It almost never ends with one person admitting they're wrong. Especially when they have very different life experiences to shape their mentality. Everyone thinks they are right so how can anyone truly be wrong?

  16. It's all perception. You can perceive life to be a certain way and that perception you have of life is creating your reality.

  17. How much control does a person really have of their perception of life

    Exactly!

And considering how there's 10000,00000,00000,0000 human ideologies on the planet.. each one of them utterly convinced that they know what's best for the human race.. how will we ever be able to tell which is the Right one?

Just because the Majority believes in something, doesn't make it 'Right', either. So in that sense, 'democracy' is a logical fallacy - except it's the only system that more or less makes people feel comfortable enough to go on about their daily 9-5 lives without having to think about politics.

After all, there can only be One truth. 1+1 equals 2 no matter what everybody else's opinion is. The problem is, there is no way you can actually ask the universe whether 1+1 does in fact equal 2. You have to sort of take it for granted, and live with this assumption.. even if it's just a manifestation of the mind.

Then again, one thing that we all have in common is the desire to avoid suffering and pursue happiness. If you put your hand on a burning hot stove - you automatically know that what you are experiencing has negative value, no matter how nihilistic you think you are.

Thus, any philosophy or political ideology that can increase overall perceived levels of happiness through its practice, as well as decrease perceived levels of suffering - is a successful ideology. Currently, democracy seems to be leading the way - then again, I would like to see a society run by the same principles as the Scientific Method. e.g. If a policy is scientifically proven to increase happiness and reduce suffering, it should be passed.

Right or wrong is just thinking in binary terms, same with good/bad, like/dislike and others of the same realm. This fallacious attack can be due to the subconscious, the conscious mind would just lead the individual to discuss in a formal manner instead of getting aggressive. Stupid, idiot, and dumb are medical terms, when a person uses this against you, ask them, are you a licensed medical practitioner or nah? :p
