So I'm FINALLY nearly set up with my grow cabinet and ready to germinate my seeds. I have Sure to Grow grow medium, and wanted to seek some advice on how I should germinate my seeds. The Sure to Grow starter cubes have a cross cut down inside the hole where you are supposed to put seeds or the ends of clones. So that's one option, I could just moisten the starter cube, put the seed down in the hole, and put the cube in a dark warm place sealed in a plastic container. Basically the paper towel method without the paper towel. This is what the Sure to Grow package suggests.
However, the drawback I see with this is that the Sure to Grow cube only has a small hole on the top, with the cross cut in the softer material beneath. The top itself is a denser material, designed to evenly distribute water to the rest of the cube. My fear is that, if the tap root cracks upward, the seedling will not be able to find its way out of the hole because it'll get stuck on the surface material.
Is this a stupid fear?
My other option is to just use the time-honored paper towel method and then transfer to the starter cube. The problem I foresee here is, there's really no way to get a fragile taproot into the cube without risk of breaking it, due to the design of the cube (the hard surface material with the little hole.
Has anyone used Sure to Grow before? What do you think would be the best option?

i use it and do studies against hydrodon and grodan for them as well;)
it's about 10x better than rockwool for sure...i like hydrodon and sure to grow about =
both have pro's and con's but so far sure to grow has also been reusable...
it's ph neutral all together..so soak it in ph buff water with very light nute soluion to give the medium some viability before using..soaking only literally takes a minute with that stuff..
it's great meduim for ebb and flow system's..
i dig it..
i use rappid rooter plug's and a small hothouse for seedling's and clones then transfer them to my medium plug and all..
...but rockwool plug's are the same way basicly..minus the slit's and just a tiny hole...
just plant them vert with seed tip down, the little knot on the backside of the seed should be facing straight up..or at the top..
this will ensure the seed grow's in the right direction...i'd try the cubes and see how they do...
work's for me
i have to say i was a sceptic, got involved with sure to grow, and it really is great medium...i totaly got rid of every bit of grodan rockwool i had..lol

Awesome, thanks. So if I plant the seed pointy side down, I shouldn't have any problems? Like this:

Is this a stupid fear?
Yup, it pretty much is!
By nature root will follow the rule of gravity and go downwards. There are actually many people who suggest planting root upwards because the root curls once anyway. Thing is if the seed is healthy and vigor it will find its way for sure! Relax man, and GL!

Whew! Thanks guys! It's nerve-wracking being so new at this. I feel like I know a lot, from reading, but I really don't know a damn thing until I experience it.
Aside from the waiting (to get everything set up right), the hardest part so far has been ordering my seeds. I want to make sure those babies germinate.

What hydro system are you using and what series are you using. I'm using the hail sereie with mixed results.
