Ventilation FAQ

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Bohbo, May 4, 2010.

  1. You have to create zero pressure in the tent. Like a vacuum. Also if you have a window try and vent it out there. Other than that you may have to do a small grow like 1-3 plants and get an ona bucket to cover the smell.

  2. Has anyone experienced having air-cooled reflectors/ducting making rattling sounds only when the fan is turned to low? Do you know what causes it? The rattling completely stops when the fan is at 50% or higher. It sounds like maybe a small piece of something is constantly bouncing around the ducting, but I don't know if that's just an illusion.

  3. I was told in the store that many fans are not designed to be used with fan controllers.

  4. Thanks, and I agree with that, but this fan came with it's own controller. It's called "Hyper Fan", and the controller was one of the main selling points.

The fan is far away from where the noise is originating, and the fan is running smoothly and quietly. The noise sounds like maybe something is bouncing around in or near a reflector. But I don't want to open up my duct work without asking for advice first.

  5. A mercury thermometer and a digital thermometer both say that it's 92 degrees F at plant level, but a nice ($120) infrared thermometer says that it's only 80 degrees F. Which one should I trust? The plants don't look heat stressed.

I was guessing that since the other thermometers are sitting under the lights constantly and absorbing radiant heat from the lights, maybe the IR thermometer is more accurate in this case.

Check out what my friend has done in the heat reduction and beginner's luck thread. His is in a small bathroom. His bathroom exhaust is good for 140cfm while the inline 4in fan is good for 170 cfm minus about 15% once the PHRESH filter is on inside the tent. You could get some duct line outside to prevent recirculating the hot air.

Go over this link for some ideas: http://www.just4growers.com/stream/ventilation-and-environmental-control/how-to-calculate-the-size-of-your-extraction-fan.aspx

  7. I've got two California light works solar storm 880's led lights inside a 4 1/2 (deep) x 6 1/2 (width) x 6 1/2 ( height) grow box. (170 cubic feet).. I'm having serious heat issues. My ventilation system consists of two vortex s-line 6" outtakes. And one vortex 4" intake. Temps are still rise up to the high 90's with ventilation running. My space doesn't permit me to put a portable ac inside the box, but I bought one for the room that my unit is inside. Would bringing the ambient room temperature to the upper 60's combat the issue if that's the air my intake is drawing from. Any suggestions would be super helpful

  8. The AC will help! If you notice the exhausted air is really warm I would suggest trying to port it directly out of the room to make the AC unit more efficient.

  9. Hi I have a medium sized room with windows all closed and boarded up to look like room is in darkness and the door to room just cracked open and no more.i have a fan just circulating the air in the room and I'm growing 4 plants. The room humidity is 55 and temp is 27 degree Celsius. I check plants 3 times a day so fresh air is getting in ok. Problem is smell is starting. Now as this is a rental house I can't drill holes and I can't vent outside as if I do the only way I could would be to open window and as I'm using hps 600w the light would b obvious and I have neighbours that would definitely see. So how can I get rid off smell?its getting worse everyday. I was thinking ona gel but researching it and seems ok but I would use a lot over my entire grow. Can I just use a canon filter and just recycle the air in the room or is a carbon scrubber better. I am a noob and have asked about ventilation before but I need it to be undetectable. What should I do??

  10. You could get a carbon filter and fan. A combo I. Amazon is like $110. You can vent the air out a window or you could vent the air in the same room. The carbon filter should take care of any smells

  11. Hey guys, What are the recommended brands for ventilation fans? I seen the recommendations made by the OP but that was back in 10'. I wana see what the common consensus is for brands in terms of price, quality, and reliability. Same thing for Carbon Filter, are there any brands to stay away frm?

In regards to CFM, the filter should be bigger than the fan correct?

Just a little about the setup...
    400w Mars II
2x2.5x7 tent...size not set in stone but no larger than 3x3
I would also hope to keep everything 4"....if that changes anything

Hurricane Fans 435 CFM Inline Fan, 6-Inch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006Z1JLY4/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_0LVcub1BDZTQ5
I am very happy with this brand and price... I'm not the most experienced feller though... But I like it... I also wish I went up one size as I have open hoods... I haven't used a filter yet.......

  13. Do you use a speed controller with yours?

  14. Not yet, but I will once I have a real environmental controller... And I'm pretty sure you want a controller that modulates the wattage not the, uhm, something else I forgot... 1 will burn out your motor quicker.......

  15. Yea that's what I wanted clarity on. I've read way too many horror stories of those things burning out and almost burning down houses. It'd be nice if I could get the one that changes speed because of the temp n lights.

  16. If you really wanted to you could use a vortex like fan while the lights are on, hooked into the same timer as the lights. Then when that shuts off, have a smaller inline duct fan to kick on.

Use a Y connector pull air through the single side of the Y, place the two fans on each of the remaining connectors.
So rather than use a fan controller as mentioned can cause issues to the fan and possibly malfunction and catch fire, this setup only requires another 30$ cheap duct fan a Y fitting and 1 to 2 more timers depending on how your currently plugged in.

  17. Depends on how you have it setup. Place the carbon filter in the tent, run duct from the filter out of the tent and to the Y fitting. LOL or even better yet! Just put the two fans together inline. Id say put the stronger one on the outside and the duct fan in between the vortex and the filter.

  18. Now that you say that, it's like duh!! Lol but that's perfect! That's what ima do, thank you!
