grinding or buds

Is it ever appropriate to put a whole bud into a pipe/bong and spark it up or should the bud always be ground up? Any thoughts? Thanks.

it will burn way better if you grind and hits much harder. i prefer grinded but thats just me

It's all personal preferance. My buddy has been toking for years, he's actually the one who got me into smoking, and he never grinds his weed. He's never even owned a grinder. I recently bought a grinder, not so much for the bud but it has a screen for catching keif underneath.

I used to just throw the whole bud in a bowl or rip it apart with my hands, but then once I found out that grinders collect kief (aka the best thing ever), you get better hits, and it makes your weed last longer...now I grind ALL my weed...best $15 dollars I ever spent.
But it's really your choice...whatever works for you man

People will say that it burns better when you grind it... but that depends on what you mean by better. If you're packing a 1-hitter, then yeah totally grind that shit up. But if you're like me and have a bong with a huge bowlpack, then grinding up the bud can result in an unwanted cherry and thus wasted bud, even if you put a quarter over it or stomp it out with a lighter. Also, whenever you grind up your bud, you are going to lose some of the kief unless you make QWISO (basically just washing your grinder with alcohol and evaporating it). And it's not like most people grind up a bowl and then throw the kief from the kiefcatcher in the bowl on a regular basis. I like to piece it up into smaller nugs most of the time, because big nuggets are just such a bitch to burn most of the time.
Take all of that with a grain of salt. No matter what you do you're going to lose some small amount of kief, and it doesn't really matter as long as you're getting high

Grind it real real fine and you will get alot more out of a bud.

The more surface area available for the flame the better the burn.

Even if a bit of burnt shit is all black on the outside it could - and usually is - green on the inside. More shit you haven't smoked yet.

When I started I would just put a bud in the bowl but it burns better if you break it up. I have never seen anyone just put a whole bud in the bowl before when smoking with people. You don't need a grinder to break it up you can do it by hand.

some do like to just rip a piece of their nug(obviously not the whole thing cause u cant even hit it properly/smoke goes into the air).


if you grind it up, you dont need to hold the lighter as long/as much while you hit it to get it to burn.
so less lighter time=much better. and u dont have to buy as much lighters


but hey man if im like piping/bonging outside. i prob aint gonna be fucking around with grinding it up. any slight wind can easily blow the grinded weed and its just a pain to get ready most times.

My friend puts in like .4g to 1g nugs and says they burn better and get you higher. Aggravates the hell out of me and he wont listen to common sense.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. So related question--if I'm grinding and using a glass pipe, would I lose a significant amount of herb down the hole? Anybody use a screen in a glass pipe to deal with this? I don't think I've ever seen anyone using a screen in a glass pipe, but I've not really paid that close attention. Supply is pretty tight around here, don't want to waste any.

Get a glass screen at your local headshop. There's some cheap ones called Jax.

Break off a little nug over your grinder so you can at least try and catch some of the fine kief that falls off, if you don't believe me break up your weed in the sun where you can see all the dust floating around, you will cry at the amount of dust that falls into your carpet. But anyways get a nug that covers bottom of bowl, then load the rest of all ground up bud, I always put just a little kief hit for me on greens The best is putting some green on top of a hash bowl, you get a nice green hit along with hash, it hits you soooo hard

I knew this guy that would just smash way oversized nugs into the bowl of this tiny pipe (he ALWAYS used it) and he would NEVER let us puff it, and he never joined our sessions...but he would smash it in...take like 2 huge rips...then eat the fuckin rest of the 75% not kicked bowl....wtf is that

Of course it is possible to do it by hand, but I would discourage against that because the crystals are very sticky and you lose some on your hands. It does need to be ground, though, to increase the available surface area so your get more out of the weed. I have also noticed a big difference in the quality of the grinder; a few weeks ago I had to use the coffeeshop's grinder because I forgot my nice metal one at home. It was one of those cheap wooden ones with the skinny metal spikes in them, not proper teeth. I then tried to smoke it with my Vapor Genie pipe, and it was much harder to toke than with my proper aluminum grinder.

yea dude the guy was my friends older brothers friend, and back in the day they used to buy us booze haha. We actually did smoke with him one time, and the bowl starts, a couple hits get taken...then he fucking kicked it out, wtf man it wasnt even half done
