My Coffee Can Carbon Filter

  1. Wassappening!?

I just made my carbon filter for my grow box and wanted to share it. It's cheap, easy to make, and you will probably have everything but the carbon laying around your house.

    Duct Tape:devious:
    Knee High Stockings $.33
    Small Plastic Coffee Can
    Mesh Pen Cup -$1.50
    Activated Carbon -$6.50
Dremel Tool (or something to make holes with)
    Box Knife

First off, Take your coffee can and cut the center of the top out. Turn it over and cut the bottom of the can out.

Now take your drill and starting drilling holes all over the can. If you don't have a drill use the box knife to cut slits for air flow.

Take your mesh pen cup and put your stocking over it. Put the lid back on the coffee can and force fit the pen cup in the can through the lid.

Roll your stocking down over the can and turn it over where you cut the bottom out and fill with carbon. Finally take your duct tape and tape up the bottom you cut out, I taped the part of the lid I cut out over the hole.

Now attach to your exhaust! Yet another coffee can creation for your cab :yay:

  2. what kinds of size is that?

  3. It's just the smaller coffee can, think there is only two sizes. I'm only doing one plant in my cab so it should be big enough for me.

  4. Ha! Very ingenious black, love it! How does it work? Good? Have you put to any tests like with smoke or anything?

  5. Nah, havent had a chance to even go anything with it, going to test it tonight with a lung full of smoke for giggles to get an idea. I been so busy with college this week I barely have time to troll the forums.

  6. Thats pretty slick, I want to see the test results. Also your directions could be a little more clear though I got the gyst of it. The only part that im curious about is the last few steps after you get the mesh cup into the coffee can.

  7. Once you get the mesh cup in the can, roll the stocking over the coffee can. Turn the can over and pour in the carbon, tape up the hole in the top of the can and you're set. I'm really baked right now, so I'm trying to make sense lol

  8. First Post :hello:
Thanx For this, I set it up this week. Works Great!! At first I wasn't sure it was working then I read up pressure and quickly disconnected my intake fan. Instant results

  9. Thanks for posting! I'm glad it helped you. It does the job for cheap.:D

  10. I plan on using this method during my first grow. I was just wondering how you get the carbon to the plant?? (totally newb question)

    thanks!

  11. It's not for getting Carbon to the plant but for removing odors.:confused_2:

  12. Oh . I guess i need to keep reading..:smoke:

  13. Hahahaha... Best 3 posts ever. ^^

  14. wow nice idea:) definitely will save me a couple hundred on a retail filter!

  15. So if I'm reading this right, the pen cup is there to keep the center hollow, right?
I tried to make a bucket filter once and found just filling the bucket with carbon restricts airflow to the point of unusability. Ended up just purchasing a filter, time was of the essence.

  16. Thanks for the idea! +rep

I went with the larger Folgers can and a larger pen cup I had to get from Office Depot since Walmart only had the small one. Also I did mine reverse from yours. I cut a hole in the bottom of the can and put the pen cup there. Then when I flipped it over to fill it I just put the lid on and put one quick wrap of duct tape around the lid to seal it and hold it on. I didn't see the point of cutting a hole in the lid and the bottom.

I had started to think I had a little smell starting (about 3 weeks from germ) and wanted to get this put on and it seemed to be working great. I got home from work today and opened my closet and a wave of dank hit me. My first thought was my wife is going to kill me. My second thought was I'm going to have to shell out some bucks to get a real filter from the hydro shop. Then I moved some of my camoflage around and saw the filter had fallen off (it hangs from my 3" pvc exhaust). I knew I should have secured it in place better the first time, but added 1/4" nylon rope under the bottom to keep it from falling off again. I'm back to odor free now!

  17. Hey i was just wondering ....how in the hell will air pass trogh that carbon?:)
So i am growing in a pc grow box. I know i will need a small filter.
But what is up with the pressure?I will only have to make one filter for the one who blow's air out? seems logical to me.Sorry my english is bad.
    Will air pass?

  18. Pretty much did the same thing. Though a tin can was used instead and the holes had to be made with a screw driver because there was no drill around:mad:. But it works!!

  19. Anyone have any idea as to what size filter or possibly what amount of activated carbon relates to what size grow room can be cleared of odor? Ie- perhaps a small condensed soup can would work with pc (with something a little smaller inside of it of course); then a medium sized container for say a small one medium sized box like maybe a 1.5x1.5x4 etc etc

I think these coffee can filters and others like it are a great topic and very interesting. The money that can be saved alone is worth the effort and time invested. :)

  20. Just give it a try and see if it works. Im sure it will. As long as u have a decent fan with maybe 50-80 cfm to push through the scrubber or pantyhose.
