I consider my self a seasoned smoker, and that is why I decided to post this here, if it should me moved, let me know.
Anyways, 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan), it is the precursor serotonin (it becomes serotonin inside of you). Serotonin has various functions, including "the regulation of mood, appetite, sleep, muscle contraction, and some cognitive functions including memory and learning."
5-HTP, being the precursor to serotonin, is marketed as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid.
Browsing the web last night, I came across a few postings that said 5-HTP, taken before toking, would increase your high. Being familiar with the name of the herbal supplement (my mom is into supplements) I went up to my kitchen and checked the cabinet, sure enough, 5-HTP was right out in front.
note: if your own 'vitamin cabinet' is not as thouroughly stocked as mine
I asked my mom how much she usually takes (she uses is as a natural sleep-aid/relaxant, although I did not find it to cause any drowsiness). She said she usually takes 2-3 (100-150mg).
I took 3, and left my house, I had to run some errands before I stopped by my buddies for a session.
By the time I was smoking it had been three hours since taking the 5-HTP, and had it not been for the dramatic effects, I may have forgot taking it alltogether.
The buds we were smoking were premium, very dense sticky nugs, and being from Bellingham, WA, I'm used to some good stuff. Although I would have to say this may be some of the better I've had. Anyhow...
Upon taking my second toke from the bubbler, The giggles began. I have never described my "high" persay, but I will do my best.
Everyone else reported a strong body high, and stoning effect. I was enjoying those 'symptoms' as well as some intense viuals, including the illusion of objects breathing, ever so slighly, remmniscant of low dose psicobilin, but not foreign. And the laughing, I could never stop laughing. It was like my first time being high. Amazing!
The high was long and powerful, and I kept smoking without difficulty. 5-HTP allowed me to get high a dose that would normally have only gotten me started.
And the muchies held off, I can't say my appetite was suppressed, for when I did eat, I ate a lot, and enjoted it very much, but i wasn't stricken with the need to eat ASAP.
It was a very positive experience with a supplement that may have positive effects in other areas as well (imporoved cognitive function..?).
Either way if only used for it's high increasing properties, of which I am thouroughly convinced, it would not be a waste. Especially for the seasoned toker, who may find satisfaction in lower doses than normally desired.
I plan on doing some experiements to determine a tolerance/maximum effective dose, and I will keep you posted.
So I christen this the official 5-HTP thread, where others can share their experiences and insight, or just ask questions.
