Activated carbon diffusion

Discussion in 'Other Smoking Accessories' started by pigstick, Aug 31, 2009.

  1. Activated carbon is made using charcoal pellets and processed to become VERY porous. This porosity makes it a very good filter for smoke. It's used in Brita water filters, industrial air scrubbers, and various other applications that require filtering or absorbtion.

Activated carbon filters are already being manufactured by leading bong makers and weed smokers rave about the results of smoking with activated carbon. Some of the advantages to using activated carbon in your bong include better tasting smoke, cleaner smelling bong water, and less sticky resin buildup.

I've used activated carbon with VERY good results. To me the high seems cleaner, less cloudy then when smoking out of a nonfiltered, dirty bong. THC does not seem to be filtered out of the smoke. If it was, I don't know why top companies like RooR and EHLE would be making carbon filters.

My innovation in smoking technology doesn't come with buying a carbon filter attachment. All you need is activated carbon. I get mine at PetsMart in the fish filter section. It can be bought for about six dollars a pound. Make sure you read the label and buy one that doesn't have any health warnings. Some companies use weird chemicals when manufacturing their carbon.

    1) Clean your bong! Dirty bongs are nasty.

    2) Buy activated carbon at a pet store. I usually get the larger chunks, about the size of a small pill. I have not tried it with the fine sandlike kind.

    3) Make sure you soak your carbon in water first for about ten minutes to get rid of that nasty black dust. It will make your bong dirty.
DO NOT PUT CARBON IN WITHOUT SOAKING FIRST! YOU WILL INHALE CARBON DUST!

    4) After ten minutes, pour out the water in the cup you were soaking the carbon in. rinse it off again and pour the water out. You want CLEAN carbon.

    5) Pour the carbon in your bong. You want it to be a little lower then where the water level would be normally, but high enough so that your downstem will poke into the carbon pellets for maximum diffusion of smoke!

    6) Fill bong with water to normal level.

    7) Load bud, toke.

The idea is that the smoky bubbles will rise through the water/activated carbon mix, and become diffused, also filtering smoke. This keeps your bong water VERY clean and my bong hardly got sticky at all after a weeks worth of use. Replace your carbon as you see fit. It will get all clogged and look resiny/nasty.

  2. not a bad Idea, ive seen lots of people putting glass pellets in their bong water but truth be told, id rather have it inline.

I have a roor carbon filter attachment and its amazing! its simple and clean and well work the twenty something I paid

  3. yes, I have the roor carbon filter too. It works like 2x as well with carbon in the attachment and the bong itself. mmm so fresh and so clean. I'd rather use an inline too, but for 6 bucks, a pack of activated carbon works wonders. :smoking:

  4. this is fucking great. i love it. +rep fo sho!

  5. Just got some activated carbon stones too, didn't get the in-line adaptor, instead just bought a WS meteor glass gauze and put in top of my 18.8 GSpot Diffuser, leaves enough of a gap in the downtube to add a layer of stones :D

  6. Anyone try putting the activated carbon stones at the bottom of their bong yet? I'm curious to see what other people think of this. It worked well for me and my friends.

  7. Paint ftw. lol.

  8. Im thinking of getting some activated carbon pellets for my pipe. I already have diffuser beads in the base of the piece and instead of straight replacing them with the carbon pellets entirely, I am wondering what you all thought about putting the pellets in the down stem (mine is diffused with closed bottom) as to mimic the carbon filter?

  9. Hmm interesting.. so you have a roor carbon adapter too, but you prefer using it straight in the bong? Lol a pic of your actual bong would be better too :D

  10. i dont think puting it in the bong would make much of a difference but what the hell do i know? BUT what i do wanna try is put some in my pipe it has a small chamber in the middel with screens on bouth sides so it would be perfect for holding chunks of carbon and would probably cut wayyyy down on the harshnees it looks like this one. Medium Micro Pipe - Dutch - Grasscity.com:smoking:

  11. haha yea probably would:

just yer average bong, ice kink, diffusers (downstem and beads) and a bowl

no carbon filter attachment, wanting to have a cheaper alternative. heard of using carbon pellets as the diffuser beads but thought putting the pellets in the downstem would create a similar effect to that of a filter.

  13. You can put a screen in the downstem and put the carbon in the downstem.

  14. lol@old thread......I DIDNT KNOW YOU COULD USE CARBON ........lawl

  15. Lmao do people actually put carbon in the water? Seems like a bad idea to me...

  16. that's great,like it

  17. Yeah I just used it on my grav elite it keeps it real clean

  19. bump? idea of putting the screen in the down stem then the carbon beads? thinking of going to grab that for a total of about 10 bucks? any thoughts?

  20. Or for those with accessories, maybe an ashcatcher filled with carbon and a spritz of water! Hmm?
