*Time-Lapse* Let'smoke Loves to Grow, Likes to Show

HELLO CITY!
Welcome to my first grow journal! It should be a lot of fun, I've even been putting a lot of effort into something special, which I hope will start a trend for journals to come; more on that later.

I'm sorry to say I've been gone for a while, my spot got a little too policey, and I felt I had to kill my Big Bangs, *sob*. I don't hang around here when I'm not growing, so sorry if I left any conversations half-finished.

The current grow is sort of a trial run for this space. We've got a 600W light and about 1.3sm of closet. It's being exhausted with a box fan, and odor is handled by an ionizer, so if I have any problems, they will be heat / smell. The ionizer has worked in the past, although it's not 100% on the odor and these are much skunkier bagseed.

Everything else I've dialed in on previous grows but I still have yet to have a really *good* grow, where I know I didn't screw at least one thing up. hopefully this will be it. I'm still calling it a "trial run," just in case .

I tend to be quite verbose but I'll make an effort to keep rambling to a minimum.

When I first started, I found the best light / wattage could be had with a 600w, so, that's what I bought. If I'd the chance to do it all again, I'd read this:

Be forewarned that the bud from this will more than likely not be gorgeous like what some of you have; it gets in the eighties here w/ the light off and I have no A/C . My plans for temp: move a shitload of air through the room (boxfans) and pump a shitload of air into my DWC setup (35W pump for about 20gal). Again, if I'd known everything I know now, I'd be doing E&F as it doesn't suffer from high res temps like DWC does.

I had problems with ventilation last time, so this time I said fuck it: there's now two 20"x20" holes in my closet wall. Again, if I could do it all over again I'd probably have gone w/ CO2 and A/C, but I didn't realize how hard it would be to coax a box-fan into pulling air through a flat filter, even w/ two sandwiching the filter. I also *assumed* this would be cheaper in the end. Even if I value my time at $0 (which I don't), I'm not sure that's the case. And of course - it still isn't how I want it. *sigh*


The plants themselves are some super-skunky bagseed that I saved. I'm not a fan of bagseed, as it's like a box of chocolates, in a bad way, but I'll try anything twice .

They went in the ground on Mar-29, Aires on the lunar calendar, so it should be FIRE ( to any astrologists). While I've been setting up, they've been in tiny cups of MG moisture ctrl under two four-ft fluoros, and yes it shows. One plant that was smaller and more indica was transplanted to hydro early last week and was given her own 15W CFL bulb to catch up with her bigger sisters. I won't say which one she is, I won't spoil the fun of letting you guys guess .

Well that's about it. The room is still a bit of a work in progress, as you can probably tell. However, I was too excited to keep it to myself. They'll each get their own bucket very soon, power strips will be secured, etc.

As promised, this post is huge and rambling. It seems like I'm forgetting something, though. Oh well, you guys will let me know and get it in the next post .

So, nobody wants to chime in and say that want to know something more about my setup? Maybe something mentioned in the title I haven't talked about at all and could easily dedicate a classic Let'smoke-style book of a post about? I'm not gonna bother until I know someone out there is paying attention .

Oh, yes I've done my homework. It never seems like enough though; seems every time I finish some aspect I find out there's a whole different way of thinking about things I didn't even know to look for.

I've been slacking on getting the room finished, spending too much time here .

Here's what you want, a little update:
05-11-09 11:58p - the drooping was indeed fixed by a top-off.


05-12-09 8:58p - though some plants responded faster than others. (Some of it in the last picture may have been from the dark cycle)


I'll edit the first post so you can more easily compare the growth in new tabs - They've come a ways in 72 hours!

The one on the right has some preflowers and they're getting big. It's too soon to tell but I'm afraid they might be slightly raised off the stem

Again, I have the problem w/ drooping which goes away by the end of the dark cycle. I'm thinking it could be high res temps (75 when the first pic was taken) but until I get everything setup, like the 35W airpump, I'm not going to diagnose it.

They are already very smelly! If plants are already really skunky at the end of veg, do they get way stinkier in flowering or can it kinda level off? If it keeps getting worse I might have to do something drastic.

Remember, I may whore out Rep to anyone who lets me know they're watching . .

dont know about the drooping, or the smell, haha, I've apparently only grown strains that don't really smell, its kinda nice because of stealth, but I'd rather have a stinky strain that I have to work to cover up. think of it as a blessing.

looking good man, cant wait to see what kinda buds that bagseed throws off.

Very nice nice startup grow thread, I like how thorough your posts are and the updates on pictures including the time which should help you if anything goes wrong or other blades can see back on how its all going.

I wish I could grow Im always checking the grow journals as I find them such an interesting read.

finally, someone has the brains to make a time-lapsed grow journal. thank god... you should reposition the camera though, it looks a bit off center, and the plants will of course grow up and out of the frame.

good luck to you, we are doing similar things so it will be interesting to compare our results.

And, as a time lapse with automated updates, this is a good place to be if you like to, "watch." Even more so if you like to read, lol.

H20490 - why can't you grow, black thumb or your situation? In either case, study all these journals and when you do take a whack at it, you can skip a lot of the mistakes we didn't. If you think all these pics w/ times are cool for diagnostic purposes, try opening them all in new tabs and clicking across them .

Predballer - Glad you like the idea, it took a bit of doing. I'm so impatient, lol, I want to know how much they've grown every single day. I also want to start a trend if possible; I'm using 100% parts I had lying around for this system but I'd like to see more, er, affluent growers get some better quality vids on the way. Time-lapses demonstrate the utter folly of prohibition and how it can't possibly be enforced effectively.

The camera, as it was gifted to me, is little more than a ball on a string. I had to cut a piece of foam to go around it to mount it, so the pitch can't change.
It's intended to be more or less centered on the grow by the end of the grow, so it'll be raised as the light is raised. If I'd left it in it's final resting place, half of each pic would be HPS hood.
It is also tilted a bit, I don't actually remember why atm but I do know that's as close to centered as I could get it. I'll take some pics later and it might make more sinse().

I also tried to angle it so the overhead light wouldn't shine into the lens; this is my only webcam and I don't plan on buying another soon.
Of course, it'll make the final video "jump back" every so often but I feel it was the best comprimise I could come up with . And like I said, expect nothing high-qualtiy .


Here's what's happening:
I swear this is what goes on in the room when the grower's away:
Plant 1: "Hey, which of us is the biggest and prettiest."
Plant 2: "I am."
Plant 5: "No way, I am."
Plant 3: "I'm not so bad either."
Plants 1 & 4: "OK, you can all be the males."


The one you see to the bottom left is very much a boy. The one sharing his container I'm 95% sure is male as well. That big pretty one on the end is a textbook hermie.
One in the middle has definitely shown her sex () and I'm optimistic for the other one in that container which has yet to.

My hermie is interesting in that about three nodes from the top, everything is female. Underneath, 80% of the flowers are male. I'm considering cloning that top to see if it'll be uniformly female. Of course, I'd watch it like a hawk. Opinions?

In other news, temps have typically been getting no higher than 77 for a day, the all-time high is 87, though.

I think I know what causes the drooping - they do! The plants on either end just seem to want to droop when the light is about to go off and right before it comes on. I checked them in the middle of the day today, temps were 77 in the room as well as the res's [I know...], and they were all perky and happy.

The thing that blows my mind is that they weren't even on 18/6 for 72 hours before they started doing this at the end of their day; I didn't think they'd pick up on the cycle that fast.

So - to everyone that I've said, "Great grow, except maybe for the drooping leaves," to, I apologize.

Uh, let's see, cats like fan leaves and are very clever, so don't be like me and get fooled by the old, "I'm fast asleep. It's perfectly safe to leave the door open, even for a second."
