What happens when you die?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by Mushie, Apr 23, 2009.

  1. This thread is simple, just as the title states. What do you believe happens when one passes away?

I beleive that when one passes away, he leaves his human body and becomes his true form. His human perception is gone and the true universe is revealed to him. We can only experience what our mind limits us to. So when we are freed of our mind I beleive we are free to experience everything without limit. I could go way more in depth about my beleifs but I will keep it somewhat simple.

What do you beleive death has in store for us?

  2. I believe we will never be able to truly comprehend death.

i think something happens similar to what you described.

i believe each person lives his or her life in search of answers to questions they don't understand. like the way religious people claim to find god after their death, buddhists strive to become enlightened and people claim "truth will set you free." understanding the death gives someone the perspective they need to understand life, therefore knowing what happens after death might be the truth that sets a mind free.

when i sober up i will remember that me and my thoughts are the products of mechanics and chemistry and after i get cremated, i think i'll become floating oxidized hydrocarbons and greenhouse gases >:[

  4. Based on how this Universe is, I don't believe there will be Universal freedom after death. That would be nice, and I wish that is how it was, and perhaps it is, but I don't believe it. Our minds and awareness are just the products of our brains, and if our brain dies, everything we are dies with it. We are just like any other matter, like the trees or the stars. We are born, we grow and live, and then die, returning to nonexistence. There probably is something more, since this Universe's laws are fined tuned to support life, but I don't understand it.

I know what you mean by death setting you free. The possibility of dying, of not existing in this world, is what makes life life.

  5. I believe we will enter into the spiritual realm, and meet spirit and god. Then you will be reincarnated or stay in heaven.

  6. I believe that when you die nothing happens, I have put a lot of thought into this and while it is hard to explain nothing because we have never known "nothing" I think that you just cease to exist. No memories, reincarnation, heaven, hell etc.

Just my belief, I can't prove it and it can't be disproven.

  7. Yea thats what I think. I believe in god but there is honestly no way for me to prove his existence, I think he wants it that way so its sorta harder to believe in him.

  8. I think when you die you feel the exact same way you did for the billions of years that matter and the universe existed before you were born and thus conscious of thought. I think the only reason this is so hard for us to comprehend is that we ARE eventually born and capable of consciousness, and thus have a benchmark of sorts for what "living" actually feels like. Humans are an extremely selfish species and disconnect from nature and most other living things. We for some reason (other than the fact that we happen to be the smartest animals on earth) think we have "purpose" and are entitled to something else after life.

  9. Thats exactly what i believe, its depressing but its true and humans simply don't want to believe the straight up truth :(

these are my thoughts. Although half of me does believe in some sort of after-life. It's all you have to look to when someone close to you passes away, it's hard to cope with the fact that they are completely gone from existence (which is probably true) rather than in heaven, purgatory, or hell.

The illusion that we as humans build up, that we were put here by an omniscient being for a reason, is really all bull shit. We think we're significant, when we are just as significant as cows or ants. We just have complex brain and organ systems that allow us to progress over time. There are millions.. and I mean millions.. of other, more complex civilizations out there. We just haven't discovered them yet.

  11. I think something happens, but from the human perspective it's incomprehensible.

Whatever happens when we die somehow contributes to the order of the Universe, that's the only thing I can be sure of.

  12. i feel that when you die there is no after life, your just a body in the ground. no consciousness. Religion and afterlife is just a way to help you live your life as a good person. If there is an afterlife that would rule but i just feel like there is much more of a possibility that there isnt.

  13. nothing

just like before you were born

    nothing

    just nothingness

Imagine reversing that question and asking it about life. What does life have in store for us, indeed, it's a question many defer thinking about for future events or other impossible things they can't change? Death is around us every second, while we're sleeping, while we're snuggled close to our loved ones, and when we're busily about our days as usual. There's no worry it's coming soon enough, but the question still remains, what does life have in store; because this very second death doesn't mean a fucking thing.

"Death either destroys us or unmasks us. If it means liberation, better things await us when our burden is gone; if destruction, nothing at all awaits us, blessings and curses are abolished."

    ~Seneca~

  15. I think death is the end of consciousness. There's just too much evidence that the brain is responsible for consciousness for me to believe that any consciousness survives brain death. So that's no fun, but I think it's fascinating how much of an influence an individual has even after death.

Think about all the choices you've made in your life that have permanently altered the world around you in some way. In your lifetime you've played a part in a chain of events that will be going on well after those synapses have stopped firing. Long after the world has forgotten who you were, your atoms will still be incorporated and recycled in the world. So you continue changing the world, you're just not aware of it.

Time........... is a tricky one. What if shit just was....

Electrical signals and shiznit to the brain....

    Hmmm....

    Facts are silly.

    I'm just a vessel.

    Life is an old movie.

I am the I's manifestation of itself.

    Lolwhat?

So you're claiming nothingness exists because you have no understanding of yourself prior to birth? Fair enough.

  17. We can never comprehend nothing because to our human minds, nothing is something. If you have ever seen on tv or anywhere when someone is in a complete white room with " nothing " in it? Well the white in that room is something. So nothing must be dark? No because darkness is something as well.

  18. What happens when you die?

You shit and pee in your pants, you stop breathing, your heart stops pumping, and within minutes, you start rotting and start to stink.

And after that, you're either buried, cremated, mummified.... so on and so forth...

Not so 'glamourous' afterall, is it?

  19. Hahahaah

Anyway, I believe that everyone's belief is wrong, which makes me think most beliefs are wrong because they're just assumptions we make (?), but..
We have NO way of knowing.

Thinking about that makes me want to just live in the present, enjoy what I'm feeling right now now

  20. And I'll bet you're feeling pretty high right now.... :D

I'm gonna go and roll me one now... it's that time of the day.
