+rep man, I agree with that. Marijuana has helped all of us in our bad times, and now it's time to have it help everyone out. Potential profits are no longer lost; and the costly spending we already commit in this "war on drugs" would be cut. Not only would we MAKE money, but we'd SAVE money. That can add up to a pretty sum when we're talking about billions of dollars to start with - and it trickles down through all of economy. Medicine is cheaper as a result, and so is fuel (if we start harnessing hemp for fuel), and so is clothing as a result of hemp as fabric... overall, our daily expenses would decrease by quite a lot. Anyways, I'm pretty so I'll stop there, but now's definitely the year of cannabis (or is it the ox? ). Hopefully we legalize it before we financially fuck ourselves over some more.

Apparently he is the one in charge of the committee that the bill is in unfortunately. Make sure you email him...I provided my email to him as a reference, you can do similar.
Ok, first of all, Chris Hurst can suck it because marijuana is NOT a narcotic!! Second of all, Chris Hurst is a Washington State REPRESENTATIVE. He isn't doing his damn job if he refuses to confront an issue that the people of this state obviously believe needs to be heard! He is refusing us our rights as citizens of this state and country by being a huge douchebag and turning a cold shoulder towards these bills that are causing this political uproar. Yes, marijuana is illegal. HB 1177 and SB 5615 are not fighting for legalization, only for decriminalization. Marijuana is, under federal law, illegal! Thank you Chris Hurst, we are all aware of this. But that will not change the fact that WA residents will continue to use marijuana medically, recreationally, and resourcefully, regardless of its criminal nature. We can only fight for its legalization which, without the support of such Representatives as Chris Hurst, make it a difficult journey for us potheads. But we must continue to fight for what we know is just and true. Marijuana has the potential to save this Earth from suffering.

As a 25-year veteran detective, I have some concerns with the potential for confusion for Washington State's citizens about their liability to prosecution by federal officers. The federal government still has marijuana classified as a Schedule 1 Controlled substance, which is completely prohibited under any circumstances. Due to that, federal officers will arrest Washington citizens for possession of marijuana regardless of what the state law says. Since Washington is a border state, and has hundreds of miles of coast patrolled by the Coast Guard, our citizens have far more contact with federal officers than most states. The Coast Guard has the ability to search any vessel it desires, and Washington citizens could be caught, arrested, and prosecuted in federal court for misdemeanor, or even felony possession, regardless of Washington's law in this matter. In addition, Washington citizens routinely cross the border into Canada. U.S. citizens returning to Washington from Canada are subject to search by the Border Patrol and U.S. Customs, also federal agencies. Like the Coast Guard, they can search any vehicle or person crossing the border, and would charge citizens for possession under federal statute instead of state law. I do agree that we need to take a long, hard look at the way we handle drug crimes and sentencing in this country. The so-called "War on Drugs" has been a failure, and if we are truly going to address the issue of illegal drugs we need to change our mindset. My concern is that we need to have the federal government take the lead on any changes. If they were to make marijuana possession a state-by-state issue, rather than a state as opposed to a federal issue under the Uniform Controlled Substance Act, then it would be appropriate for the state to consider this matter. The last thing we should do is set Washington citizens up for confrontations that could lead to convictions that could follow them for the rest of their lives. As a representative, in his mind, he is looking out for his constituents. He knows there are faults in the way we handle marijuana users but feels that federal laws override the state laws and honestly it is a valid argument to a degree. His examples are also valid because those things could easily happen. But I do think that the people of Washington state are smarter than to bring weed into or from Canada. Of course there will be isolated incidents but it doesn't outweigh the benefit of decriminalizing.

Yes, it's 100% true, ONE PERSON CAN hold up a bill, if he heads the Committee where the bill is. There is absolutely nothing anyone can do about it. It is the Committee Chair's Legal Right. In cases like this, it doesn't matter how many representatives, Republicans, Democrats, experts, law-makers, gods or monsters we convince. If that bill doesn't leave Committee and get to the floor for them to vote on it, it's a dead duck which will likely have to wait until that Committee Chair leaves office (next election), and THEN ONLY if he/she is NOT re-elected there is another change then to get the bill out of committee and onto the floor. Since what Christopher Hurst is doing is fully, totally, 100% legal, the only thing we can do is point out others like him who have lost re-election. These people are always on stupid, stubborn power trips. It is impossible to get them to listen to reason, but we can try. I've seen this happen before, with other (unrelated) causes. If you agree with me that no one is going to be able to persuade Chris Hurst in any one-on-one conversation, you may then also agree with me that the best way to pressure this guy into representing the will of the public is to expose his maniacal power trip to millions of voters all over the state. I think this is a good plan because everyone, not just people from the State of Washington, can do it. When writing to state reps, they usually don't listen at all to what outsiders (who can't vote for them) have to say. Also, each published Letter to the Editor holds so much importance to politicians, when a letter is published naming a representative, a copy of that published letter is faxed right away to both the state office and the office on Capitol Hill (when there is one). This is because although your one letter directly to said representative counts as the opinion of ten people (that's why they're so important to write), representatives know that your Letter to the Editor is reaching millions of voters. That makes those letters extremely important. Our letters should let voters know what Chris Hunt is doing, how he is abusing his power in his own selfish interests (usually, there's a money connection) and if he does not submit to the will of the people, he should not be re-elected. These letters will also give us the opportunity to educate millions of people throughout the state, point out the fiduciary benefits of this law, and let them know countless other positive details regarding drug prohibition at the same time.
