Cloudy Clumps in Canna Coconut Oil

    I make cannacoco caps with BadKitty's oven bag method. They work great, I've even make different batches w different strains: for awake use and for sleep. I usually do 16oz coconut oil w 28gms herb. I keep it in 4oz mason jars, quilted ones, so they are freezer safe & boiling safe.
    Cannacoco has replaced Fentanyl patches for me. It also reduces my other meds, by replacement or lower dosage. I use less muscle relaxants, for example. Cannabis (smoked) helped me exercise to lose 350+ lbs AND beat Stage 3 cancer. Now, the cannacoco capsules are my long-acting pain & nausea medicine! My doctor said that my 18 years of use has been beneficial to my spinal injuries, the CBNs have acted as a neural protectant. Such a wonderous plant! [​IMG]
    This summer, I used the oil by carrying two 0.5oz blue glass bottles in my purse, each for a different purpose; along with gelatin capsules. I can then count out the drops of oil into capsules and take immediately. This method allowed me to mix batches in one capsule, it also simplified identification, the bottles are MUCH easier to label than the capsules. LOL. I kept the 4oz jars that I refill from in the fridge all summer. I also keep premade pills in the freezer at home; for when filling a capsule isn't possible or wanted. Freezer storage REQUIRES a dessicant canister or packet, though! So does the bottle of pills in my purse.
    BUT.
    When the weather started to cool off, I was warming the bottle in my bra & dispensing as normal. No biggie. I was also heating the 4oz quilted glass jars, either by microwaving or placing in a hot water bath, to refill the 0.5oz bottles. Worked well. Each 0.5oz bottle holds enough oil for approximately twenty, size 0 capsules.
    Well. I took a two week vacation from capsules to drop my tolerance. Now that it is solid at room temperature, I thought that it would be okay out of the fridge. (DUMB, I know >facepalm< Hindsight is 20/20) So, it's been out at room temperature for a few weeks. Partly, I forgot where it was cuz I wasn't fooling with it daily. Lol.
    Today, I was making up capsules for the freezer & one jar has some tiny black specks on the inside of the lid. The cannacoco oil also has a few cloudy clumps, kinda like a 'mother' in vinegar or wine. SIGH. It smells, to me, same as the other jars. So, I don't detect a difference, but I don't like the smell, so I probably wouldn't notice. Argh!
    I'm POSSIBLY considering reheating it to 212F for 10 mins, to kill all pathogens. That's 7gm of herb, dang it! I believe in safe over sorry, but surely there's a way....?!?
    So, my questions are as follows:


    1. Can I reheat the 'off' oil to fix it? Strain cloudy clumps out first?
    1a. IF so, should I do that to all my oil, just to be safe? Rewash the jars, lids & bottles before refilling.
    2. This batch was made in a kitchen that was....well, not up to MY cleanliness standards. Could've easily contributed OR is this a risk from the herb being too wet/not decarbed enough?
    2a. Guess ALL my cannacoco will stay in fridge now & made in sterility! Does the actual temperature matter - fridge or freezer?
    3. How long can I carry around the capsules safely? BOTH Summer and Winter?!?! (Current Winter methodology - Usually they start out frozen & are carried in a pill bottle in my purse, with a dessicant container, I refill the bottle every 2 to 4 days) Winter & Summer will clearly require different methods....but what?? I need it to be mobile, with dosage adjustment possible on the fly. (Remember, I deal with Midwestern hot hot summers!)
    4. Is there an all-natural preservative I could add to enhance stability & shelf life? Taste isn't important, this oil goes into capsules! Ideas? Whatever it is, it cannot change any other chemical properties of the cannacoco. Considering citric acid, unsure how that would affect the cannacoco oil?
    4a. Does this mean making smaller batches more often? I hope not, cuz it takes a good amount of my energy, which is limited.
    5. I've been having some odd cramping diarrhea trouble, off & on lately. It's very unpredictable. Wondering if this might be why?


    Thanks for reading this far! LOL I tried to lay out all the information to reduce confusion & hopefully answer most of the basic questions y'all might have.
    Any ideas? Suggestions? Has anyone run across this before? Thank you!

    Hi,

    ... first things first, throw that $#!& AWAY.
    .. that is if your heath is more valuable than 7 grams of weed.???


    That being said, experience with 10-20 qts per batch (10-20 lbs butter) the weed the butter and all
    is often exposed to non-clean to your standards, for eating, anyway, we're making canna coco oil butter
    (not growing mycelium here, just heating weed in oil and straining)



    Also definite certain molds or 'dangers' to your 'goodies' can be filtered using micron filtration.
    (depending on the 'problem' or contaminent size which can be found google-wise)

    another option for super saftey, heat it and such then have tested at a lab.???
    (((but again this is a quarter ounce we're talking about)))



    For years many growers I worked for, had minimum set up for 10-25 trimmers.
    Trimming and pot work was done in out buildings, garages, barns, campgrounds, and i've not had any of those issues you mentioned, but it couldn't hurt to reheat.


    What i might suggest IMHO
    bring to high temp (i'd check pasturizing coconut oil temps but this will also burn goodies)
    in crock pot then let cool just enough as to not splatter when you pour into deep pot (big spaghetti pot or stock pot of water)
    pasturize material at the heat desired,
    pouring through coffee filter when hot before water,
    this should help remove any residues and solids that are not fat soluable.

    It sounds like it has gone rancid. That can happen so long term storage should be in the freezer because even the fridge isn't good enough to prevent the fungus from growing and often provides a favorable temperature for it, not too warm or cold. I learned the hard way myself.


    The mold/bacteria is introduced a couple of different ways. The most common reason is water used in the extraction process. Because you use BKS' method you shouldn't have this problem because water wasn't used in the processing. While water can be an effective way to remove the unwanted, yucky compounds from your product, it also introduces bacteria/spores that can survive the heat you give it. Even if you didn't use water in the extraction you could still have gotten some moisture in your oil from condensation inside your container or if your material wasn't fully dry before using. Decarb would normally eliminate this reason. Condensation could also take place by changing the air temperature rapidly such as taking it in and out of a cold fridge into a warm kitchen. Also external contamination from the work site.


    Do not ingest it but you should be able to use it for a topical. First filter it the best that you can, assuming you don't have the scientific equipment to do the job. Heat it at 240F for about a half hour then filter again if able. Heat it again to about 160F and add some beeswax and let it melt. Remove it from the heat, let cool a few degrees and then add a few drops of Vitamin E as a preservative. Add a few drops of tea tree or other essential oils and whip until creamy. You can also add some almond, avocado or jojoba oils which contain a naturally high vitamin E content.


    I'd suggest just decanting enough for a few days to a week at a time. Of course, the caps can be made well in advance and just stored in the freezer until ready for use but not the fridge for long term storage.


    Vitamin E is a preservative as well as a vitamin and is used for that reason in a lot of applications and it is easy to use for a home DIY user and it only takes a few drops. [​IMG]
