Never smoked before, going medical in illegal state-- kind of lost

I'm 25 years old and have never smoked before. I've had plenty of
friends who smoked, and definitely never looked down on it or was
judgmental of it or anything. I just wasn't particularly interested
(I'm not big on Alcohol, either. Guess I just don't like altering my
consciousness that much). My birthday is even on 4/20! In high school
every time I was asked if I celebrate, I responded "Of course I do, it's
    my birthday!".

One of the issues I've had with cannabis is that it's definitely still
illegal where I live, and I don't want to have to deal with dealers, or
with not knowing exactly what I'm getting, etc (All the issues that go
    along with prohibition of anything).

All the dealers I could get in contact with sell stuff intended for
15-30 year olds to use recreationally, and that's not what I'm looking
for. My mother has had some health issues after trying to wean herself off of
a medicine prescribed by a well-meaning doctor for her anxiety. She's 30 lbs underweight, can't sleep more than 4 hours at a time, and has crippling anxiety attacks
daily. After doing all the research I could, and talking to a few
different doctors, we've concluded that cannabis is an avenue we'd like
to explore. Rather than go to a friend and ask for a hookup, I decided
to control my mom's medicine from start to finish, and have begun
growing some Northern Lights in a home hydroponic setup.

Obviously, the first rule of growing at home is to not tell anyone. So I
haven't. But as a result, I can't really ask anyone I know questions
about this. I've done a ton of research, I've read all the stickies here
    and on several other forums.

I'm just wondering if anything about my situation makes an experienced
smoker and/or grower think of anything I may have missed. I plan on
trying some of the final product before I give it to my mother. I want
to make absolutely sure it's not too much for her. I don't want to
trigger anxiety attacks or too much paranoia if possible. I don't know
really what to expect in terms of sensation or anything, nor can I
eyeball how much is how much. Honestly I don't even know how cannabis is
usually packaged or sold other than in mason jars.

I'd like to make the actual consumption as palatable as possible for my
mother. She's 60 years old and has smoked once in her life (it was a terrible
experience for her and from the way she described it I sincerely doubt
what she was given was just cannabis). She smokes 2 packs of cigarettes a day. I was
thinking of buying a box of cigarette tubes and a loading machine to
make spliffs for her (and maybe cut down on the cost of tobacco). But
I've also pondered just making a batch of tincture so that she can
measure precisely how much she is consuming and just drop it in her tea.
I don't think a vaporizer will go over very well with her, she hates
the vapes I bought her to try and curb her tobacco use.

If we lived in, or hell, even near, a medical state, this would be so
much simpler. But I'm not about to let my mother suffer, or be
prescribed 15 different pharmaceuticals just because of some legal risk.

Thanks ahead of time for any advice you have to offer.

  2. First of all I commend you for wanting to help your mother. Be careful on the grow and keep it quiet and you should be fine. Have her start slow with smoking. Since she is a smoker then smoking Js should be fine for her. Too bad driving to a rec state is out to save you a bunch of trouble.

  3. Thanks. And yeah, we're actually super far from a rec state. We're Denver Bronco fans though so been thinking about planning a trip out there to see a game and show my mother that cannabis isn't just for guys trying to date rape her in the 70s.

Thing that really sucks is that I'd like to buy seeds there instead of through international post, but I'm not looking to bring some on a plane, and a drive out that way would be like a week long trip.

Joints would be ok, I suppose. Was thinking about cigarette tubes since they're so familiar already. I've read that "filters reduce the THC" if you use cigarette tubes-- is that just general lore that they reduce the effectiveness of cannabis? Or is it actually specifically THC?

  4. Filters with take out some but not all of the active ingredients. This can be partially avoided by poking holes all the way through the end of the filter using a paper clip. Best bet is to use paper tips or cone papers that already have a filter.

Here is a possibility you may not have thought about. Fly to Denver and drive a rental back home. Check all around and you might find a car rental place that you can drive a car back home cheap.

Rec side of Denver stores won't sell you seeds just so you know. I already asked lol.

Wish you the best just trying to help with options. My take is growing is a huge pain in the rear and you might have to grow several different ones to find "her type" and she may refuse to smoke it even if it helps. Plus in a illegal state growing a couple of plants is a felony in most cases. In some of those very same states possession of less than an ounce is nothing more than a ticket (I'm talking Mississippi btw)

When you get a chance to get to Colorado ask the bud tender for medicine for anxiety, to help her sleep and help her gain weight. There are tons of strains that do that, mostly indicas. You can buy a 1/4 per store and legally possess an ounce in Colorado. Nobody checks except for the 1/4 per store per day thing.

  5. One other thing you can do is buy concentrates and or candies on your trip. Unpackaged candies mixed with other candies that look the same will get past any drug sniffing dog. Yeah they will hit on the pot but the handler won't know if it is the candies or the pot setting him off.....concentrates can be put into something else and transported........

I'm not saying fly with drugs, I'm just saying TSA isn't looking that hard at candies and egg shaped lip balm containers.....

  6. A friend's dad was dealing with cancer a few years back. She too was in an illegal state. Another friend of ours who is very advanced with all things herb, simply mailed her all sorts of cannabis oil and herb. Apparently mailing it isn't as big a deal as we fear.

Obviously, I'm not saying I know 100% this is the way to go, but I do know them and another case where it was simply mailed without repercussions. Maybe take a trip to a legal state and mail yourself a decent supply. I would recommend doing some more research on tips on how to mail it.

As far as what would do your mom good, I would think an Indica strain should mellow her out nicely and help her with sleep. Both Indica and Sativa should help with the appetite, but Indicas are generally sleep helpers, so she might not want to smoke that during the early day, unless she actually wants to go to sleep.

It is BS that just because you are not in a legal state you do not get to simply walk into a store and can buy the herb that could help her.

I wish you guys all the best.

  7. As long as the dealers have good weed, there isn't any different between recreational smoking and medical.
Unless the dealers only sell midgrade.
Northern lights is great stuff, I smoke it everyday. Just keep with your grow and then when it gets legal you will be able to have better access to seeds/clones of different strains.
    Cheers

Most dealers have very little knowledge of what they are selling. Instead they make bullshit names that make it sound good or tell you it is whatever strain you are looking for just to make a sale. For dealing with ANXIETY for a first timer(or in his case a second time user) then getting the right strain becomes even more important. Something less strong would be probably better than a heavy hitter like Northern Lights.

Much of what is sold by dealers are Sativas that get you high as a kite, Medicial herb leans heavily on Indicas or Hybrids because many people want high CBD and lower THC if they are really trying to medicate.

The OP already said his contacts as dealers sell Sativas and not suited for what he is looking for when looking for medicine for his mother.

  9. Northern lights is great for anxiety. He definitely doesn't want to have her smoke sativas if he doesn't want her to have a panic attack...
And if they aren't looking to get high, then they should be using CBD oil instead of smoking weed.

Northern Lights is NOT available by name from every dealer in the world my friend. Most importantly and more to the point is the fact that The OP already said the dealer connections he has does not sell weed suitable for his mother's medicinal needs.

Nobody said people do not want any high, part of the high is relaxation and the ability to get a decent night's sleep. I said people that only want to medicate don't want to get totally stoned like some of the people that come here posting in a medical part of this forum. I can not in good faith say that Northern Lights is the best strain to start for anxiety. It is really too strong for a newbie to start out with especially when dealing with Anxiety. Later on? Probably great (As you so noted) My wife and I medicate for different reasons and some of the same. Neither one of us like really strong weed at first, now we look for stronger stuff, probably due to tolerance issues. My nephew shit his pants when he smoked some of our stuff with us one time and it was just stuff I grew and we thought was just "Ok". He loved it, just shocked him how strong it was.

Read my post, I said LOW THC not NO THC.

  11. he said he was growing northern lights, which Is why I was talking about it. I never said he could specifically ask a street dealer for it, I'm not a dumbass lmao.
Smoke some weed and chill out

  12. Use your own advice dude.

  13. While I'm certain there are dealers in my area that sell what I'm looking for, the issue is that I just don't know them.

Everybody I know who smokes is 18-25 and into smoking the strongest sativas they can get ahold of, if they're not exclusively dabbing.

I think ideally I'd go on a trip to CO and have my Mom check out a bunch of strains in a safe environment and figure out what works best for her, but short term the research I've done has said that NL tends to tick the boxes on most of my Mom's needs.

Something you mentioned that I'm actually really intrigued by are CBD oils, which are totally legal in my state. They seem like they could really help with a lot of my Mom's problems, though not all of them. So I'm thinking they might be a safe way to ease into cannabis as a medicine. Thanks!

  14. Hey firstly I'm sorry if double posting is a problem here but I'm not so great at navigating the editor and managing the quote system. This stuff has changed a lot since my PHPBB days in the 2000s.

Anyway, the reading I've done has said that timing of harvest and method/time of curing can greatly influence the final cannabinoid ratios in the product. So far I've been planning to harvest when trichomes are mostly amber and to cure for a long time in a re-purposed cigar humidor, in order to shoot for higher CBD and CBN levels than are average.

Please let me know if I've understood the theory properly-- thanks!

  15. I dont think growing is the way to go considering you have no experience, your first few grows you will probably screw up somehow and buds will taste like shit and u will make your moms anxiety worse by having her smoke shitty weed.

Also i think you are giving Northern lights too much credit for thinking its the perfect strain, most weed has the same effects lol.

  16. "Most weed has the same effect" That has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever read.

  17. i dont think growing is the best thing to do if you dont know much, but you can always ask the good people here at gc if you want to know stuff
