2000-5000 for a top line steam machine?

  1. I was really looking forward to retiring my potato for good.. But holy shit, i don't know if i can justify that kind of money for gaming alone. Even $700-800 is pretty steep in comparison to the consoles. I might just build. Thoughts? I'm not as knowledgeable as i would like to be when it comes to PC's. More of a console guy just for the convenience factor, which is why i was looking at the steam machines in the first place.. But yeah, i have been working my ass off past couple months and its just about that time to find myself a reward. Some input into value of specs vs. price would be great. Are any of them worth the cost even remotely when taking into consideration any type of build to get similar specs? Is this just a cash grab?

  2. Definitely not the one to weigh in here, but I think you could build a godly pc rig for less than what you'd pay for a "top of the line" steam machine that comes with comparatively inferior hardware and productivity.

  3. $2000-5000 for any type of gaming rig is ridiculous. Don't bother even thinking about that sort of $$.

I had my gaming rig built by one of the bigger PC builder sites. It set me back $1,200 and it runs circles around the latest consoles. I run each newer AAA game on ultra settings and my load times are non-existent. $2K+ spent on a gaming rig is good for nothing but bragging rights. The additional $ jump to even $2K greatly overshadows the slightly better performance. Anything above that is hilarious unless you're just filthy rich and don't care about $.

I could have built it myself for even cheaper, but I wanted pros to do it and get a decent warranty on it in case anything ever goes bonkers. 2 years in so far, working like a charm.

  4. Let me get this right, steam machines can ONLY play steam game right?
If that's the case fuck that, spend like $900 on your computer and build it your self.
Spend most of your money on ram/ graphics card.
Don't cheap out on the Mobo or power supply or you'll be hitting yourself in the long run.

Get a Mobo that can run 2+ graphics cards, and a fuck ton of ram for future upgrades.

Then buy a Xbox one controller or a steam controller and hook it up to your computer

  5. SteamOS limits the hardware more than a Windows based PC would. Running a PC running windows and Steam Machine with identical hardware, the PC would perform better. I'm sure they'll work on optimization for the SteamOS, but you're better off just building a PC for now.

  6. I hear you can get a decent gaming PC that is better than consols for just slightly more than what consols cost if you build them

  7. Just spend 300 to 400 on a console. Every time a game comes out I always hear shit loads of people having problems running it on their brand new 1500k plus pc

  8. Yeah I'm not much into pc gaming but I have friends that are. And my friend just built a brand new pc that is a absolute machine can play anything on ultra settings. He paid 1600 and that was with some extra stuff. He said the pc alone would of been about 1300.

  9. I bought my pc in 2013 and have yet to run into any problems with it, it was about $750-800.

    Specs:
    i5-3570k Processor
    8GB of ram
    GTX 660 graphics card
500GB hard drive you need much more or external hard drive, new games are starting to take a lot of space.

The hard drive was the only thing I've had a problem with. I have been able to run every game I've tried on highest settings with max frame rate. Haven't played this years games yet though still waiting on Fallout 4 to download.

  10. build your own, it cost me £1600 or around that but that will last me a good few years and can play most games with ultra graphics and thousands of mods
